Her death still seems somewhat surreal. 7 years has gone by so fast.

Aailyah's material to this day still sounds fresh. Even her debut album still sounds fresh. She was truly ahead of her time.
However, with that said I don't think she'll be on the level of Justin or Beyonce. I think she would have suffered the same fate someone like Monica suffered sooner rather than later. Great sales and then you hit a bump in the road. I think the same thing would have happend with Alliyah if she was alive.
I think her voice was angelic. She may not have been the greatest singer, but for the amterial she had her voice fit it perfectly. There is much more than range and power house vocals. Some singers with great range I cannot listen to because they are always screaming in my ear that you cant make the words out or want to for that matter.
There are many great singers that put out horrible material. Just because you got a 5 octave range don't mean nothing. If you can't carry the song itself.
Aaliyah could always carry her material and she did it with such grace. I just love her. She was a real innovator of R & B music.

I'll never forget when I heard it on the radio late at night. I was in utter shock. What a big loss, she seemed so sweet and grounded. And the music she put out was incredible. My favorite Aalyah album being One in A Million. Damn, you are truly missed baby girl!

I recall hearing what had happened on NY1 here in NY. I was in disbelief for a good two days. It was devastating hearing about someone who felt like you had grown up with actually die. One In A Million was one early CDs I had purchased. Hot Like Fire grabbed onto me and I had to buy the album (my dumbass had no idea what a single was lol). I cite Aaliyah as an artist who helped introduce me to R&B, a genre I've been very familiar & at home with ever since.
As for my favorite Aaliyah album; again, One In A Million. You just hear Beats 4 Da Streets and you know you've just uncovered one of the coolest/hottest albums ever. The album, with plenty of thanks to Timbo, really helped enhanced the flawed & forced appeal R.Kelly had placed on to her during the AANBAN era. She was now a confident teen with the experience to back it all up, and she definitely presented the part. The mid-tempo-mainly album helped define her sound for the years to come and the legacy that followed.
Aaliyah had a certain brand of music that, for the most part, was eerily melancholic but smooth enough to get everyone to listen. Just listen to basically any cut from OIAM, Aaliyah or two of her biggest hits; Are You That Somebody & Try Again. What separates her from the rest of the bunch is that Aaliyah was a true soul who produced true soul in her music.

Yeah, I think so too. Her last album sold REALLY GOOD with no hit. I remembered it debuted at #2 with sales over 200,000 with only We Need A Resolution, I was such a huge fan she was my favorite artist at that time.

Aaliyah was the queen of the mid-tempo jam: "At Your Best (You are Love)," "We Need A Resolution," "If Your Girl Only Knew," "Four Page Letter," "I Don't Wanna," "Hot Like Fire," "Rock the Boat," "I Refuse," "Miss You" etc. etc. No bombast was necessary for her. She was the epitome of sultry.
She released two nearly flawless R&B albums back-to-back in One in a Million and Aaliyah. The latter, in particular, was compelling to me because of how she was able to infuse different sounds with R&B and still sound completely herself. It still sounds amazingly fresh today. She will be well-remembered.

If you meant she debuted well without a hit, then I'll give you that, but then she scored a few major R&B hits. Between that and her death, it's not that surprising it sold as well as it did. I definitely wouldn't say it had no hits. "Rock The Boat" was huge and still gets a ton of airplay today. "More Than A Woman" and "I Care 4 U" were big too. She was never much of a crossover artist anyway.

And she had that Timbaland sound down long before it was the HOT thing. Tons of her songs would still be big hits if they were out today

Oh, I know that the sales were drove by her hits 'Rock The Boat' and 'More than a Woman', I was just talking about the impressive first week sales.

Yeah, time is flying by. 9/11 will be seven years as well. When are they releasing the album they promised they would? They said she had recorded many tracks before her passing. I'd love to hear them, cause "I Miss You" and "Come Over" were really great songs. :)
