Why did such a great talent have to be taken away?
I love every album of hers except AANBAN.

Well to be fair, Spike TV is tacky and classless. I still remember the day Aaliyah died. I woke up and went in the kitchen to say good morning to my Mom, Dad, and brother, and my Dad was all like "Do you know Aaliyah" and I was like yeah, and he said "Aaliyah died" and I was SO shocked. It was so sad, especially because I remember her being super popular at the time. It was just a year after "Try Again" got to #1! R.I.P. :(

Speaking of tacky and classless, as much as I love YouTube, EVERYONE is on there...smart and stupid, young and old, open minded and ignorant.
There are some Aaliyah haters known as "DEADliyah" and some uber fans that call her Lisus and have fan wards with other artists.
What is wrong with some people? :(

Canadian R&B singer Keisha Chanté has signed on to play Aaliyah in her biopic set to be released mid-2009. The resemblance is there but my true hope is that Keisha is a good actress.

No offense, but Aaliyah's life doesn't strike me as being amazingly interesting. I mean aside from her death, there's the fact that she had a statutory relationship with R. Kelly, but that's about it.

Unless there was some hidden drama in her childhood or that was shielded behind the scenes, her marriage to Robert would probably be the most enticing aspect of her life story and the pull of that is limited since they weren't married all that long. The National Post confirmed Keisha's role.

Who knows, this project could do for struggling artist Keisha what the Selena movie did for JLO. Selena didn't have a very dramatic life either, but for the most part it worked.

I always thought Keisha Chante looked so much like Aaliyah, especially in this one video of hers. Looking forward to seeing this.

An Aaliyah movie? Although I loved her, she was never really interesting. And I wonder if they'll really address the R. Kelly marriage or just gloss over it.

Selena didn't have a very dramatic life either, but for the most part it worked. That's true.. Selena was a huge force in Latin music though. She was an enormous public figure for Mexicans. Additionally, her murder had a story behind it that worked well for a movie. In Aaliyah's case, she was a moderately successful R&B singer who was around for less than a decade before she died in a plane crash. She wasn't one of the leaders in her genre. She wasn't a huge public figure for any demographic. Also, there's only so much they can even do with the plane crash story. I loved Aaliyah, but her life just does not make for a very interesting movie. That's not bashing her. I can't think of too many singers who don't already have movies about them that really deserve to have one be made.

Yes, but most would agree that Aaliyah is generally regarded as the Black Selena. A budding star who consistently sold and whose life was cut short right before she really could shine, she really didn't have to be the leader in her field. Both artists' primary fanbase consisted of young girls, and arguably the same core demographic for the Selena pic.
I can see the "innocent" romance with the recently acquitted R Kelly being the lolita-like crux of the story and you're forgetting that at least Aaliyah had scandal attached whereas Selena really didn't while alive. As I recall, most of the criticism of the Selena film was that it came too soon after her death. With the Notorious film coming out I'd say the time is now for Aaliyah's.

OMG. I hate to knock the dead down, but this chick is so overrated. It's like, when somebody dies, they become the freakin Messiah. It's the same with BIG, 2Pac, Left Eye etc. I doubt she would even be relevant if she was alive. I mean... Monica and Brandy, anyone? Case closed

Aaliyah was a favorite of Warner Bros. films. especially movie producer Joel Silver. Joel Silver loved Aaliyah and he had her in his films. He was so hurt and devastated when she died.
Joel Silver is the movie producer of The Matrix films and Romeo Must Die.
Aaliyah was signed to four movies with more movie deals on the table.
Romeo Must Die, Queen of the Damned, The Matrix Reloaded, and the Matrix Revolutions.
The Matrix 2 & 3 were supposed to be filmed back-to-back. And they had breaks between filming. Aaliyah had filmed 80% of "The Matrix Reloaded" but, she died before they had resume filming of the movie so the producers had to recast her role and re-shoot those scenes. Her role was recast by actress Nona Gaye who played the character Zee.
So the public didn't get a chance to see Aaliyah in The Matrix 2 and the Matrix 3 trilogy.
The only films that Aaliyah were in are "Romeo Must Die" and "Queen of the Damned." The producers had to use Aaliyah's brother (Rashad Haughton) to do Aaliyah's voice work for post production of "Queen of the Damned."
Aaliyah was a rising star. She was in Blockbuster movies.

Case closed I would assume she'd still be relevant since she was working with timbaland for a while prior to him becoming huge. Aaliyah would have likely gotten first dibs on his tracks...and as much as I like Nelly Furtado, she wouldn't be relevant is my guess.

Mmkay. Look- I don't have some sort of crystal ball, but ever since she died, people have been hyping her up way too much, like she would pose a threat to Bey, Brit, Xtina, etc. She was always more similar to Monica and Brandy (niche R&B) than Britney and Beyonce (mainstream pop). That's why I think she would be irrelivant.

Well as crass as it might sound Aaliyah was never anything special. She had her fanbase but she probably would have pulled a Monica and Brandy if she was still here. Her final album was tanking before she was killed.
Odds are she would have never reached the status of Beyonce, Britney, Alicia, etc.

She nearly started Timbaland and Missy's careers, her style is still emulated til this day, she was a good dancer, great singer, very impressive actress and good person. To say that she was nothing special or that she was overrated is a bit much.
And She didn't have to reach the status of Beyonce, Britney or Alicia; I don't think that would have been a goal of hers considering she had a life away from the industry when she was alive. She wasn't as big of a star as Brandy was and Aaliyah was content with that.

IMO, her vocal talent and dancing abilities have been far overrated since her death. She was average in both fields. Many of her fans make it seem as if she was greatness that nobody could touch. If she was still around today, I doubt she'd still be making the hits. She would've been faded into obscurity.

i never thought she was a great singer, but it worked with the songs she sung i thought. Anyways who's to say what would have happened, I was just getting the point across that she would have likely not faded like Brandy/Monica due to the fact for 2 years everything timbaland touched was golden...so it might not have worked for her, but with her movies and whatnot, i'd say she would have had a much better chance at a steady, successful career... anyways it doesn't matter because she's gone so we can predict til the cows come home...

I try not to predict what she would or would not have done. That's kind of pointless to me, but I do think she made a big impact while here. There's no way that she's could be so celebrated in passing if she didn't make an impact while alive. Aaliyah's hair, wardrobe, dancing, and singing style can all be emulated which means that she was unique in those areas. There isn't an artist today that I can think of whose entire image, style, and aura is as interesting or noticable.

It sad when people talk about the dead like this, please have some respect. I don't see anything overrated about her. From her interviews, I always got this sweet girl who was happy with her success that she was having and she didn't take it for granted. I doubt she was aiming to be at the status where Britney Spears was at her prime/peak, Aaliyah was Aaliyah. Her impact much has been something even we all still talking about it right now. Nobody can tell the future so none of us could say she would be this or that right now.
I still don't get how people can say she was an average singer, the girl could sing. "I Care 4 U" is still her best vocal today and I doubt any female vocalists today could do that song justice.

Post by ba19 on Jan 8, 2009 13:20:26 GMT -5
no, there probably isnt any female vocalists today that could do that song justice...just like for every artists singles for the most part. im not a b.spears fan, but do u think any artist could do toxic justice? no probably not, doesnt make her a good singer. Anyway, yeah she could sing, but she wasnt beyonce, which like i had stated before, her voice works with the songs she had..so she didnt need to be a powerhouse vocal performer.

Her final album was tanking before she was killed. Odds are she would have never reached the status of Beyonce, Britney, Alicia, etc. Not exactly true. Her self-titled album in 2001 debuted at number 2 and had already gone platinum before her death. If anything, given the praise she received from Romeo Must Die, she might have done less recording and more movie-making, had she lived, even after Queen of the Damned tanked at the box office.
