It's a hard business and Ashlee's second single has done quite well. I think she is no 57 on Billboard this week and that may be her peak but the song is selling albums so I think her label is pleased with how it is doing.
Ii'm interested in how her third single will be doing. La La is quite good.

Yeah, a top 15 song is really a flop? In that case, I guess every 11-20 peaking song by an artist with a former top 10 is a flop. I love how people are so quick to use "flop" on these boards. It was a relative flop. It underperformed. Happy?

I think how fast "Shadow" falls will help determine if it's a flop. If it experiences -1500 spins losses from here and falls all the way out of the top 50 in four weeks, then I'd call it a flop. But if it displays some longevity, I wouldn't really call it a flop.

Do I really have to trot out that tiresome old argument about relative vs absolute flops? Anyway it's all a matter of opinion. I would call "Shadow" a flop too, and deservingly so. Now let's wait for "Baby It's You" to be a flop of I'm predicting the same magnitude.

I guess the term " minor hit" has ceased to exist.

Haha...Eminem still has a healthy bullet, but his song looks to drop 7-9 on this week's chart because of "Over And Over" and "My Boo" jumping ahead.
So the chart run after a month in the Top 40 looks to be 13-9-7-9. Of course the track will probably go up again unless the bullet suddenly goes down.

Wow, I can't believe "Over and Over" is now only 800 spins (less than half a week's gain) from #1. I said at the end of last week that a top 3 placing by Sunday's final update was very unlikely, but now that's a very plausible scenario. I hope "My Boo" doesn't outpeak "Confessions". It's not that "Confessions" is a great song, but "My Boo" just sucks. It's looking like Switchfoot will make #14 this week, and probably will get to #13 next week. Whoa, look at the bullet for Gavin DeGraw. With five of the six songs from 16-21 losing spins, this has a great shot at the top 20. Hopefully The Killers will debut on AT40 this weekend to give them an extra spin boost. The top 50 threshold is still pretty weak. With Ashlee, JoJo, and Alicia going recurrent in the next few weeks, the #50 song might have under 500 spins soon.

"Over And Over" is a definite #1, but it still seems like such a novelty song to me.

Wow…looks like Kelly is really gonna pull this off. YAH BABY….a wonderful surprise. For me, “Breakaway” sounded like a number one record from the moment I heard the opening lines. It’s been fun watching it ascend to the top of the charts. Cheers to everyone involved in the creation of this record.

Interesting because "Breakaway" was supposed to be an Avril Lavinge single but in the end she turned it down for the movie (hence her having a co-writing credit). Kelly was then approached...very smart move for her!

Kelly should just keep rummaging through the reject piles of hits artists. It works well for her.

I hate to say this, but I think Kelly is gonna get stuck with a #2 (official) peak, thanks to Nelly.

If Kelly did get stuck at No. 2, that would mean Avril has peaked at No. 2 twice in the last month -- first as an artist and then as a writer.

On the one hand, I want Avril to have her "5th" ;) #1 with "Breakaway" but I would also enjoy seeing Nelly & Tim McGraw denying Kelly Clarkson a #1 hit. Hmn...
When was the last time a song hit #1 in just 5 weeks by the way? I don't think it's happened since at least 2002.

Nah, I think Kelly has a good shot at #1.
It DOES work well for her, fishing around in other big artist's dumpsters. She should continue to do it. Hopefully the success of "Breakaway" will help.

since the main thread is closed, figured the airplay info would be of some interest in this thread. It's dropping rather rapidly now. CHR/Pop: 2,206 spins (-538)- 12.173 million audience CHR/Rhythmic: 118 spins (-66)- 0.723 million audience It's on track to drop right off Bubbling Under next week.

I hate the fact that "Over and Over" might keep "Breakaway" from reaching #1. I don't really understand all the hype surrounding "Over and Over." It's a decent song, but nothing remarkable.

If Kelly's gonna top, she has to do it this week. Right now with a day to go she's 88 spins out of it.

I can see 'Shadow' tumbling below 'Pieces of Me' before it goes recurrent. How sad.

Well, one can argue that Maroon 5 is not dropping fast enough, so they are preventing Kelly from scoring #1 right now. Just as they did with Avril... it just depends on the perspective on the chart...

Come on Kelly!!!
It still shocks me that Maroon 5 got 4 (or maybe even 5) weeks at #1 with "She Will Be Loved", when the superior song, "This Love", only had 2 or 3. That one was screwed over by "Yeah".
Can't "Over and Over" hold off for awhile? I know the combination of Nelly and Tim McGraw is a big novelty, but it'll still be around next week.
Oh well. Even if "Breakaway" doesn't reach #1, it's done way better than I expected it to. Not that I think it's a bad song, not at all, I just thought that mainstream CHR/Pop radio wouldn't be receptive to a pure pop song from a Disney soundtrack. Glad I was proved wrong.

Wow, Maroon 5 may end up getting #1 this week over Kelly. Geesh, what assholes. First they prevent Avril from #1, and now they're preventing Kelly?

First they prevent Avril from #1, and now they're preventing Kelly? yea, it seems like effing moron 5 like keeping everyone from the top spot. grrrr. I really hope this is the zenith of their career and they flop continuously after this. 3 top 5 hits in a row is already too much of a blessing.

It may not be over yet.
The gap between Maroon 5 and Kelly has narrowed...to only 13 spins. :)

What irony it would be if Kelly missed the #1 by five spins or so this week with a song Avril wrote.

Yes, the band members are the ones 100%responsible for stations playing that song as much as they do. If you want to be mad, be mad at those stations.

That would be so terrible if Kelly pulled an Avril! I would have to kill Maroon 5.

On the Billboard side of things -- Tim/Nelly are now at No. 1 on the building Top 40 chart w/ one day left...183 spins ahead of Kelly who is now at No. 2 whose 6 spins ahead of Maroon 5.
