If you aren't crazy, British, or Anglophilic in your humour preferences, this won't make any sense to you. Luckily, I am all three, and also a Kills' fan. Hence, the following news strikes me as interesting: www.nme.com/news/the-mighty-boosh/36814A TERRIFIC review of the Kills' LA Show; the writer's characterization of the band is apt & worth the read. blogs.laweekly.com/play/live-in-la/the-kills-el-rey-521-1/LOVE this bit: As far as front-women go, no one is even comes close to the girl born Allison Mosshart. She performs in an almost possessed trance, spitting, strutting, spinning, climbing up on the speaker and staring at the crowd like a beautiful, wicked queen scornfully surveying her subjects. At other times, she picks up a guitar and unleashes an alluvial delta howl, with a snarling viciousness that’s almost frightening, yet seems appropriate to the alienated love-lashed tone of her lyrics.AND AZ Central interview with the lovely Miss Mosshart: www.azcentral.com/ent/music/articles/2008/05/21/20080521kills.html

Alison & Jamie attack! Courtesy of thefashionspot: 10 QUESTIONS WITH THE KILLS Interview and Images by Kenneth Cappello 1. Hey guys, what’s new? Tell me what’s been going on in the last three months? Jamie: The last three months? Well, we finished recording Midnight Boom back in September, mixed it in October and then started on the artwork, which as anyone familiar with us will know, is a massively important part of our thing. Normally it takes us longer to put the artwork together than the actual recording of the record and we have to wade through roomfulls of photographs and paintings and scribbled rantings and collages made from napkins and matchbooks or whatever. So yeah, mostly we’ve been buried under a mountain of art junk, trying to condense it into a booklet. 2. The new record is great. Was the process different on this one? Did the guy from Spank Rock work on the production? Alison: Hey thanks. Hmmm, the process was a bit different to the last, as it took a lot longer. We wrote three records while writing this one. We experimented a lot and pushed ourselves until the music made us uncomfortable, until we were doing something unfamiliar. We wrote and wrote until the music sounded ugly to us. That was the moment we felt like we were on to something. Alex Epton from Spank Rock didn’t produce, Jamie did. We brought Alex in after we’d written and recorded most of the album and he sort of additionally produced what was there, and messed around with the beats we had and got us to try different things on a couple of songs. It was great to have a third pair of ears around for a few weeks. It helped with our confidence about the beats we’d already made, you know? Jamie was messing around with the MPC 60 for the first time, so it was cool what he came up with naively. Usually to be naive is a great thing ‘cause you come up with stranger stuff. Alex was a great help in pointing out what was working already and what could be better. 3. I feel like rappers are the new rock stars. Any thoughts on this? What do you think of hip-hop and what hip-hop artists do you like? Jamie: I remember you saying something about that a while ago and I thought ‘What the **** does that mean now, to be a rock star?’ Especially since the whole celebrity thing has become so overblown that you have to have it explained to you who the **** half these people are. It seems pretty two-dimensional, based on decadence and the idea of not giving a ****. So yeah, I guess a lot of rappers live up to that for what it’s worth. It’s funny but that happens to be exactly the image that record comp-anies like their artists to portray ‘cause the media laps it up so much and it’s good for business. I don’t think the concept really translates anymore in any way that can be taken seriously, do you? I mean, not in the way it did with Jimi Hendrix or John Lennon or Jagger and Richards, or Kurt Cobain or any of those people. The Internet changed all that. It took all the secrets and myths away and turned everything into gossip – made it so that people think it’s their right to have the most mundane information about other people’s private lives. Cultural standards are at an all time low so it follows that our rock stars will reflect that. There’s not really any room for myth building or word of mouth anymore. Rock stars have just become pastiche. Hip-hop’s still new to me. I never listened to it much when I was growing up, so in a way I’m excited by the novelty of it. Two of my favourite records from the last year or so were Spank Rock, Yoyoyo and Hell Hath No Fury by Clipse. Other than that, I love all that chopped and screwed stuff. You turned me onto that actually, South Park “Mexican Radio” (Chopped and Screwed). Incredible. I wanna make a chopped and screwed record. Oh, and Paul Wall and Mike Jones, the stuff you played me while we were eating burritos and watching boxing in your ****ty bachelor apartment. Oh happy days... 4. Is selling records important to you? Alison: Important? Um, well, it never hurts to sell records. If you sell records it helps facilitate writing more of them. But no, it’s never been much of a big deal. We’re not the kind of band that calls up the label to ask about those things. I don’t know what constitutes as a success, good or bad. I don’t know. We’ve sold more records than we ever thought we would. 5. The fashion world has embraced your band. Why do you think this happened and what do you think about the fashion industry? Jamie: I guess the fashion industry has always had a fascination with rock ‘n’ roll and underground music and punk or whatever you wanna call it. A lot of those style magazines cover music and art in a way that’s much less dumbed down than the music press. Or at least that seemed to be the case when we released No Wow. I don’t really know how I feel about it. There are too many fashion and lifestyle magazines now that’s for sure. But at the time it seemed like the alternative to the commercial music press, like they were the new fanzines or something. It’s maybe a little overdone now. I’m surrounded by the ****ing fashion industry so I feel like I’m being shot at from all sides by some of my favourite people. It’s an odd feeling. I think it’s called love/hate. 6. I know from the previous bands you were in separately that you had strong political feelings, values and ideas. Do you think as you’ve gotten older and started making music as The Kills that some of this has been lost? Alison: Well, as cliché as it sounds, the world is a very different place. That preaching kind of attitude we all had when we were teenagers, we’ve realized, does very little but piss people off. I used to go to animal rights protests and pass out leaflets and get spit on by cowboys in Florida. I know I didn’t change any of their minds, and in fact probably made them stauncher about what they were into. When some mad raving Christian screams at me through a megaphone and chases me down the street, I feel justified in my belief that they are ****ing lunatics. I think my attitude now is to set a good example, to live the way I would hope others would notice. I think most of my ideology is the same. I grew up listening to Fugazi thinking they were changing the world, and they were, and then the world changed on them, and then a certain mold or a certain plan becomes futile, and you have to change it. You have to be flexible, and take things as they come, and feel how you feel on the day, otherwise you can get a bit lost. 7. What records are you currently listening to? Jamie: The Staple Singers. I got this incredible live version of “Too Close” recorded in the ’50s that I can’t move on from. Um, Archie Bronson Outfit, Willie Nelson and Co Real Artists, who are a drum and vocal group from the ’70s. Mostly old stuff. When we were writing Midnight Boom I had this idea that we shouldn’t listen to any music other than the music we were making ourselves. I had the fear of making another retro record, and didn’t want us to get influenced by anything so I banned other people’s music from the studio. It was pretty enlightening. But I did manage to get obsessed with this film called Pizza Pizza Daddy-O, a documentary on kids from inner city schools in the ’60s singing all these playground songs. Really primitive hand clapping, jump rope rhythms and dark lyrics about alcoholism and domestic violence and miscarriages and stuff. It kind of ended up as the basis for the record and we started writing our own versions of imaginary playground songs. “Cheap And Cheerful”, “Alphabet Pony” and “Sour Cherry” all came from that. 8. You guys have a crazy energy on stage together. Can you please explain it? Alison: I can’t no, other than we’re both extremely nervous before we go on stage and so a lot of that adrenaline gets released on the other person. There are only two of us up there and nowhere to hide so we turn to one another. 9. The Smiths or The Cure? Jamie: The Cure. But only based on Boys Don’t Cry, one of my favourite albums in the world. Their Goth period I can do without, but listen to “Killing An Arab” or “Accuracy” or “Foxy Lady” – just simple and raw with the coolest, cockiest attitude and nothing like it before or after. 10. What do you think was the most important band of the’90s? Alison: Fugazi, for me, most definitely. Jamie: I’d say Nirvana probably, even though I didn’t like them much at the time. Nothing was the same after Kurt Cobain. A couple more pictures at supmag.com

SAN FRANCISCO BAY TIMES: The Kills: Fame Becomes Them By Don BairdPublished: May 29, 2008 Earlier this month I caught an amazing show by an act I’ve been enamored with ever since their first four-song EP, Black Rooster, came out in 2002. That group is The Kills, a male-female duo comprised of Jamie Hince (AKA Hotel) from London and Allison Mosshart (AKA VV) an ex-patriot originally from Florida. They recorded their first offerings at the same studio the White Stripes used to record their second LP because it featured some archaic but well-operating recording equipment from 1963 or before that produced some preferable audio quality for their pared down traditional stylings. The similarities between the two bands can pretty much be left there with male-female duo, pared down traditional style and Toe Rag Studios and it’s non-digital retro-purist approach to recording. The Kills are a much different beast than the White Stripes, approaching their music from a more bohemian artistic sense, delving more into the subversive, sexual and mysterious qualities of rock and roll, while employing non-traditional methods such as the use of recorded drum tracks instead of an actual drummer, yet serving up plenty of the raunchy blues guitar legacy that gives rock and roll its visceral grind. They seem less squeaky clean and cute, making music from a darker place with a bit more mystery and a sense of the forbidden or dangerous. Their live shows further enhance this feeling with a rather unique intensity between the two players onstage. Mosshart, tall and thin with long, dark hair and super-model good-looks, would alternately cling to the microphone stand with both hands like it was her heroin crutch, or pace maniacally in circles on stage when she wasn’t playing a second guitar and locking eyes with Hince like they were sharing a private joke as their playing reached a kinetic call and response interplay. Everything about their onstage chemistry answered no questions but rather created more, furthering the enigmatic duo’s charged presence with a playful yet darkly sexual, even sado-masochistic, energy. To date, I’ve never seen a sexier performance by a band than The Kills when they toured in support of their second LP No Wow. They reportedly heated up an already scorching afternoon at Coachella in much the same way shortly after I saw them here. It seems like a lot of time passed since then, and the arrival of their third LP Midnight Boom, a strong release bears plenty of signs of growth and experimentation, while not seeming like a departure from their formidable precedents. I just learned that Mosshart has, during the band’s hiatus, started modeling for some high profile fashion shoots like the Lindberg clothing line. Erstwhile, her musical partner Jamie Hince has taken up with supermodel Kate Moss after her much publicized relationship with another rocker Pete Doherty. In their home-base of London, this pairing ups the group’s fame level by huge amounts, shows selling out in record time because everyone wants to catch Kate Moss out seeing a show. It’s a glamorous life now, being in The Kills, but this hasn’t seemed to detract from their focus and strength as a band, and this was best exemplified by their recent sold out show at Slims on May 17. I almost missed getting to see them at all; it was that sold out, but Tracey the publicity person at Slims managed to wrangle me a ticket for purchase at the door, as she knew what a big fan I was and that I might go to unsavory extremes to get in. I was completely non-plussed by the opening band, whose name I can’t remember and who only stood in the way of my objective. The show time was 9pm, so I arrived purposely late to avoid this, but sadly (yawn) didn’t. The Kills finally came on stage at about 11:20, and I was really over waiting, but they took the stage like a storm, all high energy and rock and roll swagger, and something told me that we were in for quite a show. They had a playful demeanor with big mischievous smiles as they strapped on, hit the drum machine and slid into “U R A Fever,” the first cut on the new record which clocks in at slightly over 2 minutes and has one of the most immediately hip grinding guitar riffs I’ve heard in ages. Allison immediately started in with those manic circular paces, whizzing past her microphone stand, wearing scarves and a tiger-striped shirt and looking a touch Steven Tyler-influenced in the fashion department. Jamie was sporting a pork-pie hat, much in the fashion of his new girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend, but it looked better on him, and I must say he was glowing like the man who was dating the most famous super-model in the world. They reeled into their set with a vengeance, choosing faves from throughout their entire catalogue like “Pull A U” from Keep On The Mean Side, then some of the stronger cuts from their latest like the mesmerizing “Tape Song” in which Mosshart definitely hit the heights of her suddenly expanded vocal abilities just like the record promises. She’s a very good vocalist with an onstage demeanor that is extremely physical, her movement is quite engaged and posturings iconic, again exuding so much rock and roll swagger that you just know you’re in the presence of greatness. Hince seems truly happy and cheerful while playing, and his performance slowly escalates throughout their set to a wilder, unhinged and even possessed player. At one point near the shows end during a heated guitar solo, he suddenly started vibrating like he tripped on an exposed high voltage wire. I love the way this band looks, plays and moves. It’s almost as if each move was choreographed, but you know it’s likely not. They are like a wickedly profane ballet with a soundtrack that doesn’t put you to sleep. The set progressed nicely, changing the pace with a few of their slower numbers near the middle, yet not toning down the emotional intensity of these songs and showing how masterful they are at building from soft to a crescendo. As a band they are taut and resonant, their simplest riffs stay with you like a cattle brand. Effective is an understatement. Just when I started to think the band was about to wrap it up, they dug in with no intention of leaving anytime soon. This was a full-on tour de force, their longest show I’d seen to date. I also really enjoyed the projections lightly hitting their back-drop - mostly black and white footage of children from the early ‘60s jumping rope (from a documentary about jump-rope rhymes that inspired the rhythms of their new record) and various photos of themselves and some Ramones documentary footage. On the final note of the last pre-encore song, a number which found the duo slapping each other with guitar riffs, Jamie plucked the last riff and with the end of his guitar neck appeared to smack Allison right in the face, like it was the last note, smack, her head flew back. People gasped and then Allison smiled with twisted pleasure and they exited stage. I know it was one of their tricks and it was bitchen. Allison returned to the stage alone and did “Gypsy Death and you” solo - I think they were trying to assure the crowd she wasn’t hurt. She clearly wasn’t. They continued with a lengthy encore, including a strange and wonderful cover of “The Search For Cherry Red” by Jonathan Fire-eater, a great but forgotten band from the early ‘90s. The encore saw the band at their most spontaneous, combustible and over-the-top that I’ve ever seen them. There were amazing things going down on that stage and a stronger sense of reckless fun than I’ve seen in them before. The Kills are indeed one of the most exciting bands in roc

According to The London Paper, Jamie and Kate have split up, because she spent too much time texting Pete in the early hours of the morning. :o Game over for Kate Moss and Jamie Hince?
It looks like it's the end of the road for Kate Moss and rocker boyfriend Jamie Hince after the supermodel was spotted in floods of tears.
The 34-year-old has been enjoying some late night text flirting with her ex, Babyshambles bad boy Pete Doherty and The Kills frontman Hince is less than impressed.
As our exclusive series of pics show Moss was snapped wiping away tears as she arrived at her north London home yesterday after Jamie made had his feelings clear.
Minutes later the rocker turned up clutching a YSL designer bag as a gift for Kate, in an attempt to help thaw relations.
He stayed the night but the dishevelled guitarist was back on the street today - this time clutching the designer bag and a packed suitcase.
One eye witness said: "He didn't say much but he didn't look happy at all. I asked him if he'd been given the heave-ho... and he didn't reply but sometimes a look is all you need."
Earlier this week a source told the Mirror newspaper how Doherty and Moss has been text flirting.
He added: “Jamie was furious when Pete got in touch about a week ago. And over the last three nights he and Kate have texted each other until the early hours.
“Pete has been showing the texts to mates and thinks he is on the verge of winner her back but his mates aren’t convinced.”thelondonpaper.typepad.com/thelondonblog/2008/07/game-over-for-k.htmlAnd the mirror is reporting this... With their matching skinny jeans and a bevy of celebrity pals, they make a distinctive showbiz couple. But is the end in sight for Kate Moss and Jamie Hince? After 10 months together, The Kills singer has been moving his possessions out of the supermodel's North London home. We're told: "Jamie and Kate had a blazing argument in the early hours of Saturday morning. "Kate made some comment about a girl who'd been hanging around Jamie and it deteriorated from there. "Just hours later, Jamie was packing his things and moving stuff out of her house. By the afternoon, most of it had gone. "Kate was expected to watch The Kills play in Kent that evening but she gave it a miss and went to watch the show High School Musical instead. "Her friends had to virtually drag her there kicking and screaming as she was so upset. "Since then, Kate and Jamie haven't spoken as she has had her mobile turned off or has been screening his calls. "But he's telling friends that it's not a permanent split - it's simply that he's in the doghouse. "Jamie is playing in Scotland this weekend and is confident that Kate will be there by his side and cheering him on from the side of the stage." This is the second row in a week they are reported to have had. After snubbing his gig at the Mighty Boosh festival in Kent on Saturday, 34-year-old Kate spent yesterday relaxing in Marbella on the Costa del Sol. They have had a fairly tempestuous relationship, with arguments over Kate's involvement with The Kills. Jamie's bandmate, Alison Mosshart, reportedly banned the Croydon-born model from appearing on stage with them, fuelling tensions between the couple. Although Kate and Jamie always denied the rumours of a forthcoming summer wedding, we have always approved of their seemingly loved-up relationship. Well, Jamie, 39, was a vast improvement on the mum-of-one Kate's ex, junkie singer Pete Doherty. And Pete, if you're reading this, just stay away.

EPIC RUMORS! People are now saying Jamie & Kate split BECAUSE of ALISON specifically! Kate is jealous of her, and her effect on Jamie.
A source tells Britain's News of The World that Moss yelled at Hince telling him, "It's the other Moss, she's got your heart."

Jamie & Kate are back on. And actually, I'm not thrilled about it. The prospect of Alison & Jamie finally consummating their very special relationship started to excite me. BUT FOR NOW, IT'S BACK TO COKATE (who I love, etc).
