The blues-rock duo has started work on their third LP, and I know from personal correspondance they will be engaged in a significant recording session in mid-June. In fact, they are looking for an apartment in Manhattan to sublet for a few weeks and have implored fans to help them in their search. My brother sent them an email saying he could hook them up and they immediately replied. What's horribly wrong about this is that he was lying, so yeah, hmm. He's a dispicable human being, etc.

I saw them play at a Sunday invite-only party held in the coolest club in Lisbon. Maybe that fact influenced my view. But two things stroke me about them. One, they have almost zero stage presence. Two, their music sounded like an endless one-note trip that day. That said, I always viewed The Kills as artistic also-rans. I can definitely appreciate them in small doses, and both "Fried My Little Brains" and "The Good Ones" are great singles. But none of their two albums are consistent in any way. Plus, the supposed rawness of their music comes off a bit staged to me. Beneath all the apparent grittiness, there's an air of stylish pose that, in their case, just makes them, in my eyes, a little suspicious.

Revived! The new album, Midnight Boom is released on March 18th. It is a surprisingly poppy, primal album full of evil playground chants. It's a lot of fun to hear. "URA Fever" is the first single & here is the video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3fZP7QC4PE

Yes, it's quite feral and enticing. They've really broadened the scope of their aesthetic, all while making their trademark stuttery, drum-machined goth blues style that much more effective. I think if they play their cards right, they could get a minor hit with "Cheap & Cheerful". It's undeniably hooky and cool.

The production on this album is immaculate. Hecty's favourites so far: 01 Last Day Of Magic (EPIC.) 02 Cheap And Cheerful (The video to this is pure amazement. <333 Great choice for the second single.) 03 Sour Cherry04 Alphabeat Pony05 Getting Down06 Hook And Line07 What New York Used To Be (Hell yes, baby! ) 08 URA Fever09 Goodnight Bad Morning10 M.E.X.I.C.O.11 Black Balloon12 Tape SongNot a single bad track on this record... I wouldn't even mind a release of Tape Song. That said, after listening to the new B-52's record, this album fit right in with that. (Don't kill me, oscy! ) It's wonderfully cheeky and chimerical without being flamboyant. Perfect party music at chez Hector's with a bit of luvly slow tunes! And Sour Cherry is SO going to be the third single. It's indie-pop magic. <333333

I haven't decided what my favorite is yet...I'm buying it tomorrow for my brother (they are "his" band; my family likes to be territorial like that). It's one of the most exciting listens I have enjoyed in a long time. There's also a synaesthetic awareness about it that lends itself well to fashion and to postmodern art, which thrills me (while minorly piquing a few critics who prefer their rockers humble and/or earnest). But they weathered the storm: 6.8 from Pitchfork! One of the weaker reviews, but still nothing to cry over. This album is indestructible.

#133 debut
"Cheap & Cheerful" was free for a week on iTunes. If they get some TV appearances on their promotional itinerary, they can experience a renaissance with this album. They really need MTV to do a D&D on them!

"What New York Used To Be" is epic. "Alphabet Pony" reminds me of an evil and bluesy version of M.I.A. It's pretty remarkable what they've done with their sound, the more I think about it.

Midnight Boom demands overplay for the quality of its songs. I think other minimalist bands should try and innovate their sounds as well.

The Kills may not be going much longer given Alison's apparent dislike of Kate Moss

I hear "Last Day of Magic" is the third single. I love it, but I think "Sour Cherry" would get a bigger response. LDAM is beautiful, though. My little tornado, my little hurricano. <3

I think they should have gone for Sour Cherry since it was getting Gossip Girl promo. But w/e, I'm fine with LDAM.

I can't believe it..."Sour Cherry" #66 on the main iTunes! Gossip Girl is luring people in! Tell me about it. My friend is obsessed with them now. Not so much The Teenagers, though. "Hook And Line" is an addiction.
