Motherhood has reinvigorated Kelis, whose son Knight is the inspiration behind “Acapella,” an electro-dance record produced by David Guetta. “Before you, my whole life was acapella/ Now a symphony is the only song to sing,” she coos.

The “Bossy” songstress’ fifth studio album, due next spring, is her first on will.i.am/Interscope Records since splitting from Jive in 2007. In addition to Guetta, she is working with Burnz, DJ Ammo, Boys Noize, Diplo and Switch, and Free School.

Exclusive: Kelis Signs To Will.i.am Music Group/Interscope Records

After much speculation following the release of a song titled "Acapella" on the internet last week, it was announced today that singer/songwriter Kelis has signed to Interscope Records through will.i.am Music Group. Her as-yet-untitled upcoming album features production from will.i.am, Free School, Boyz Noize, Burnz, DJ Ammo and David Guetta, who produced the above-mentioned retro-dance track.

"I love that I am now a new part of the Interscope family," Kelis said via a statement. "2010 is around the corner and I can't wait to put out new music and spend time with real music fans on tour again."

Kelis' last label deal was with Jive Records, but she was reportedly dropped late 2007. Earlier this year, a pregnant Kelis filed for divorce from her famous husband Nas. In July, a judge orderd the rapper to pay Kelis, who has since given birth to a baby boy, nearly $44,000 in monthly support.

Kelis is best known for her 2003 single, "Milkshake," which peaked at No. 3 on the Hot 100 chart and sold 883,000 digital downloads, according to Nielsen Soundscan. The track is from her best-selling album, "Tasty," selling 535,000 units.

These days, Kelis is pulling double duty as a new mother and veteran songstress. With her four-month old infant Knight in tow, the 30-year-old Harlem native is stepping back in the booth for her fifth album. Only this time, she’s talking about life’s intricacies rather than her “milkshake.”

Her first single, the techno-infused “Acapella,” is replete with personal and uplifting sentiments. “It’s about my son, it’s about the love of God,” she reveals to Rap-Up.com. “It’s kinda about the power of life, really.” David Guetta, the track’s producer, initially approached Kelis for another project. “He wanted me to be a part of his record, [One Love], and it just didn’t end up working out,” says Kelis. “Then I fell in love with some tracks that he had sent me. I ended up writing ['Acapella'] for my album.”

Though she’s the sole star shining with no guest appearances yet to speak of, Kelis did tap several well-respected producers to round out her fifth opus. “I worked with Boys Noize, Jean Baptiste, Diplo and Switch, Burnz, [and] this cat named Replay,” she states. “I have a nice, eclectic group of guys there.”

One song to look forward to is the Jean Baptiste-produced record “Carefree Americans.” According to Kelis, “super-size me” is the motto of the nation. “It’s kinda like the back and forth between what we know that’s wrong with Americans and being in America, yet the things we love about it,” she continues, “and at the end of the day we don’t really sacrifice that much. I put myself in it as well; we are Americans and we like everything super-sized.”

For an album housing tunes designed for the dance floor, fans are guaranteed to perspire. “It’s an album you can get sweaty to,” Kelis says with a laugh. “[The album is] called Fleshtones. But don’t hold me to that. I’ve been feeling animalistic and kind of carnal in my approach to things lately. It sort of seems fit.”

Kelis’ tentatively titled fifth album, Fleshtones, is set for a spring 2010 release.

Yesterday (December 9), Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David S. Cunningham ordered Nas to pay $51,101 a month in spousal and child support to ex-wife Kelis.

Cunningham made his ruling following two days of testimony from Nas and Kelis.

Kelis verified that she inked a new recording contract with Interscope Records for $175,000. However, her attorney explained that the majority of that sum was paid out to her managers, leaving the singer with only $50,000.

When cross-examined, she told Nas attorney Mark Kaplan that her comeback career was a far cry from her former chart topping fame circa the 2003 single “Milkshake,” indicating that her latest song was quietly dropped on Twitter.

Her income could also not be determined, as documentation shows Kelis has not filed an income tax return in years.

In Nas’ testimony, the Queens legend confirmed that he would not release solo album in 2010, but did not disclose whether that included his Damian Marley collaboration LP Distant Relatives. His statements also revealed that he owed $700,000 to his manager, and $2.5 million in back taxes to the IRS.

Along with the spousal and child support decree, Nas is now relieved of having to pay the $13,000 a month mortgage for the ex-couple's Los Angeles home, in which Kelis currently resides.

Before yesterday’s verdict, Nas was reportedly paying close to $40,000 a month in temporary support.

At press time, neither Nas nor Kelis have personally commented on the ruling.

"Acappella" is currently scheduled for UK release on May 10th, with the album following one week later.

Kelis is known for setting trends, but the fashionista won’t be flaunting any avant-garde threads in her new music video.


The singer shot the video for her David Guetta-produced single “Acapella” with directors Rankin and Chris Cottam in Los Angeles last month. “It has a really strong, universal, tribal vibe to it. When I say that, I mean it’s no particular tribe; it’s a little bit of everything,” she tells Rap-Up.com. “It’s like if the world were to end and there was one woman standing, what would it be like?”

The visuals for her No. 1 dance record will be a departure from her previous fashion-forward clips. “It’s not fashion-oriented at all. Actually, it’s the complete opposite,” she reveals.

Kelis wanted to go in a different direction after seeing an abundance of fashion in today’s music videos. “I think everything is over-fashioned up that it just becomes uninteresting, and when every artist has access to every designer and vice versa, it’s no longer exciting or fun.”

Flesh Tone, Kelis’ fifth studio album, will arrive overseas on May 17 and is slated to hit U.S. shores in June, while the video for “Acapella” premieres Monday, March 29.
