Thomas Sharing 'Lonely' Via AOL Music
Rob Thomas' solo debut single, "Lonely No More," premieres today (Feb. 1) exclusively via AOL Music's First Listen initiative. Produced by Virgin chairman/CEO and longtime matchbox twenty collaborator Matt Serletic, the cut will be delivered to U.S. pop and Hot AC radio stations on Feb. 14 for airplay consideration.
As previously reported, Thomas' first solo album, "Something To Be," will be released April 26 via Melisma/Atlantic. Guitarist Robert Randolph contributes a solo to the track "I'm an Illusion," which opens with a sample of Bessie Jones' "Oh Death," while John Mayer guests on an as-yet-unidentified track.
Other songs pegged for "Something To Be" include the drum-and-guitar-driven "This Is How a Heart Breaks" and the ballad "Every the Same," which wouldn't sound out of place on a matchbox twenty album.
In related news, former matchbox twenty guitarist Adam Gaynor has spoken out about his departure from the band, which was first revealed last month by Billboard.com.
"As you may have read I will no longer be a member of the band," he wrote on his official Web site. "I know most of you were confused if not angered by this news. I wish there was some bright rainbow of an answer here, but there is not."
"I have been fidgeting around in the attic and have worked on some incredible projects, musically and otherwise, that I can't wait to share with you all in a few weeks," he continued.

The first time I heard that the title of his first solo song was going to be "Lonely No More" I thought uh-oh it's gonna be some sappy love song.Β Damn!Β But then after reading about Rob wanting to do something really different and how much he said he was getting into Justin's CD I assumed that it was going to be super pop.Β And I'm so glad that it is.Β He'll open up a whole new fan base with this song.Β
Question though:Β Some people are saying it "sounds" like Justin.Β Not the vocals, right?Β Cuz I only hear the Justin sound at the "girlfriends" part of the song.Β Maybe the funky instrumentation, but I don't hear Justin in the vocal at all.
And, do you think Rob will sing any of these solo hits when he is back on tour with MB20?Β I'm just curious if he'll have a couple of big hits that he'll never sing on tour once this upcoming tour is over.Β That would be a bummer!Β Kind of like Smooth.Β So many people expect to hear that at a MB20 concert, but Rob has said that it's a Santana song.Β What do you think?

Some people are saying it "sounds" like Justin.Β Not the vocals, right?Β Rob kicks Justin's ass vocally, obviously. Nothing about the song reminds me of Justin per se. It reminds me of Timbaland, who produced "Cry Me A River." That's the only connection I can see.... other than this being an upbeat Pop song. It still has a rockier vibe than anything Justin, the lyrics are nothing like Justin, and the vocals, well no comment. And the "girlfriends" line reminds me of the "Forget about it" line from "Smooth." (The "Open up to me, like you do your girlfriends" is my favorite part of the song as of now)

I am hoping for one of Rob's new songs to feature a saxophone.Β I don't believe any of MB20 songs have had that instrument.Β Is that correct?Β But I think Rob's soulful voice would do so well with the sax.Β

In today's LA Times:
Going solo, but not going it alone Matchbox Twenty singer Rob Thomas goes on a spiritual jouney in his latest album.
By Steve Hochman, Special to The Times
The Passion of the Rob?
Not exactly, but when discussing "Something to Be," the upcoming solo debut album by Matchbox Twenty singer Rob Thomas, producer Matt Serletic is drawn to biblical imagery.
"I'm not overtly Christian, nor is Rob, but this was a spiritual journey of looking inside yourself, giving all that you are," says Serletic, who has also produced all three Matchbox albums and, for his day job, is chairman and CEO of Virgin Records.
Serletic took that so far as to use musical instruments and styles from the time of Christ and before in the song "All That I Am," arguably the emotional centerpiece of the album. There's even a shofar, the ram's horn still used in Jewish High Holy Days services.
"I found my books from my master's degree studies and pulled references to the earliest instruments," Serletic says. "The shofar is the thing that blew down the walls at Jericho, there's an ancient Babylonian harp and an ancient oboe. And there's a Christian element. I was trying to paint a picture of the time of Christ."
Thomas isn't quite as explicit about the song and, in fact, from the way he talks about the album, the biblical story that most comes to mind is that of the prodigal son. He felt that he had to strike out on his own β but he will be returning home to his band.
"After a long time you can really start to realize the limitations of two guitars, a bass player, drummer and keyboard player," says Thomas of the Florida band he's fronted for a decade. "There's only so far you can take that, especially a band like Matchbox, where every member has a deciding vote on every sound you lay down."
That said, he didn't stray too far. He stuck with Serletic as producer and some of his Matchbox mates make appearances on the album, due April 26 from Atlantic Records.
"If I went with other hit makers, I wouldn't be sure if they did it or I did," he says, noting that Serletic also produced the huge 1999 hit "Smooth" that Thomas did with Carlos Santana. "With Matt, who's done almost everything I've done, I would be able to get the most honest thing out of me. With a lot of artists doing solo records, the focus became who they worked with β 'This was the Nellee Hooper record,' or 'This was the OutKast track and the Pharrell track.' These are all Rob and Matt."
But it's not predictable. The sound is much different from the straight-ahead pop-rock of Matchbox and, in places, from directions Thomas says people seemed to expect from him.
"People thought I was making a Crowded House record or a singer-songwriter record," he says. "But it's louder than that, and people are surprised. It covers more ground than Matchbox does. It's titled 'Something to Be' because it really is all over the place, from country to super pop-sounding."
The thread through it, though, is in the rhythm section, with bassist Mike Elizondo (a regular on Dr. Dre and Eminem records) and drummer Gerald Hayward (Mary J. Blige and BeyoncΓ©) anchoring most tracks. Guests include guitarist Mike Campbell (Tom Petty's Heartbreakers), Wendy Melvoin (of Wendy & Lisa), Jeff Trott (longtime Sheryl Crow collaborator), with steel guitar prodigy Robert Randolph driving the blues-rock burner "I'm an Illusion."
Thomas says he was charged by the experience and wants to make more solo albums and is planning a solo tour this spring and summer. But he also said that there was no question about Matchbox's resuming work as a band, possibly before the end of the year.
"We've become part of the song fabric of America with Matchbox, and we couldn't be more proud of what we've done," he says.
"But we did get to a point where if we didn't take a break to do something else, we wouldn't be able to continue."

I am curious about Disc 2 too since it has the same songs listed several times.Β I had an idea about it as I listened to Jimmy Eat World's 2nd disc in their Futures CD.Β The whole 2nd disc is just demos of the songs on disc 1.Β That made me remember an interview where Rob Thomas said that he really finds it interesting to see how a song progresses through the recording process, from demo to different takes that have different instrumentation.Β Maybe that's what Disc 2 will be for Something to Be?Β Which would be really cool cuz I love to hear how the songwriter originally recorded a song on a bare-bones demo and see how it evolves over time.Β

I found a couple of things on the web about Rob today.Β Very interesting.Β Does this guy ever sleep? Can't wait to hear the Santana one.Β Daryl Hall's too.Β So proud of Rob for his being able to control his career the way he has.Β And for saying no to Carlos regarding singing on Shaman.Β You just can't recreate Smooth, and Rob understands that.Β Β But he can write for him.Β That's great! BUSY, BUSY BOY: It's not enough for Rob Thomas that his Atlantic solo album is set to bow April 19. He just can't stop writing. Thomas, who considers himself first and foremost a songwriter, is staying true to his craft. He and Daryl Hall have written "Not Enough Love" for Hall's next solo album. Thomas says, "He's always had that classic style to him, deep into the Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, and the song's got that kind of soul to it that I never would have found if I hadn't written with him." But that's not all. Thomas and OutKast's Big Boi recently completed a song called "My Man," slated for Carlos Santana's new album and performed by Big Boi and Mary J. Blige. "I still have not yet met Big Boi," Thomas says with a laugh. "He sent me a track and I sent it back and I redid some stuff, he redid some stuff, and now it looks like they're going to actually record it. How funny is that?" Of course, Santana and Thomas have hit pay dirt before with "Smooth," which Thomas co-wrote with Itaal Schur. www.azcentral.com/ent/music/articles/0301backstreet.htmlHere's another piece of news.Β I read that this will air on VH1 on April 17th: Music benefit concert returns to Big AppleMayor Michael Bloomberg announced that a benefit concert aimed at raising funds for VH1βs Save the Music Foundation, which promotes music programs in public schools, will return to New York City for the first time in four years. The concert will be held at the Beacon Theatre on April 11. Rob Thomas, Queen Latifah, Bon Jovi and Joss Stone are among those who will perform. In addition, the Manhattan-based VH1 foundation donated more than $1 million worth of new musical instruments to help launch 41 new music programs in the cityβs public school system. The foundation, founded eight years ago, has donated nearly $3.5 million worth of instruments to help restore music programs in 166 public schools throughout the city.
