A local DJ said this afternoon that he got to hear a bit of Rob's new song and he said that the song reminded him of Ricky Martin. :o :o :o I think I'm scared now.
Just kidding. I just want Rob's album to do well and even if people are turned off to the new sound, at least he tried to do something different.

You're kidding about the Ricky Martin part or the part where you said you're scared? :o

No, I'm serious about the Ricky Martin part. He said that he would have the song in early February.
I'm kidding about being scared. I'm open to any type of music that Rob is going to release.

I can't wait to hear the new single. Not so sure I like the Ricky Martin comparison. ???
43dudleyvillas, thank you for the explanation of radio impact, and what constitutes a sucessful or promising week based on new adds.
I'm really looking forward to this album.

Well, that is certainly interesting. I can't stand Ricky Martin so let's just hope the DJ was kidding. LOL!! However, I do not expect Rob's solo album to sound like MB20. I do expect it to be more pop and R&B than rock. This is only speculation on my part since I have not heard any of the songs.

An "impact" or "adds" date is the date that record labels announce as a focal point for radio stations. It is the record label's target date for the first week of release for a single, and when the record label hopes to see a lot of radio stations adding the song to their playlists. If a lot of stations do that at the same time, the record label can trumpet the huge number of "adds" that the song got. If the song is the week's "most added," (that is, if it gets more adds on a particular format than any other song), then the record label will trumpet that, too, to build hype for the song and encourage other radio stations to join the bandwagon. If you're looking at CHR/Pop, a really big adds week means 50 or more adds (which is still less than 1/2 the panel). That typically means the song is going to be a huge hit. Thirty to 50 adds in the first week is also a very good start. Twenty to 30 adds would be a decent start from which the artist could build momentum (and with his album coming out in May, Rob Thomas will have plenty of time to build that momentum). As for whether songs typically go for adds on different formats at the same time, it depends, but I think they usually don't. Take Avril Lavigne's "Nobody's Home," for example. It went for adds on CHR/Pop on 26 October 2004, and is finally supposed to impact Hot AC this coming Tuesday (I think it took them too long to push the song to Hot AC, but that's just me). Sometimes, you'll see labels pushing a song to CHR/Pop first, and then pushing it on Hot AC after it has made the top-20 on CHR/Pop. For someone like Rob Thomas, who is a Hot AC format artist (or was as part of Matchbox 20), I have to think that they won't wait long to push his lead single to Hot AC. We may even hear "Lonely No More" on Hot AC first. But I don't know. Yeah, for sure! I can't wait -- and since the single has to get sent to radio a couple of weeks before, we'll probably hear a leak even sooner! Thanks so much for your response. Very well written and informative. Much appreciated. I am very interested in the inside-radio stuff. I agree that Avril's new single should have been released earlier to Hot AC. My Hot AC station has really lowered the spins of My Happy Ending and I was beginning to think she didn't have anything else on this CD that was single-worthy.

Excerpt taken from undercover.com.
The debut solo album from Matchbox Twenty's Rob Thomas will be titled 'Something To Be'.
Thomas decided on the album title last week after dumping the working title 'So Much For Dancing'.
The expected release date is still to be determined but has been potentially listed for April or May.
Thomas is now finishing off the record. In a recent post of the Matchbox Twenty website, he announced "I'm coming to the very, very end of my record and can't wait for you to hear it. It's either really good or self-indulgent crap, but I like it".
Matchbox Twenty guitarist Kyle Cook is the only band member to appear on Rob's album. John Mayer also makes a guest appearance on one track.
The album is expected to have an R'n'B flavour with other guests include Jimmy Jam (Janet Jackson), Clipse (N.E.R.D.), Mike Elizondo (Dr Dre) amd Wendy Melvin (Wendy and Lisa) contributing to the album.

Maybe it's a really up-tempo track and that's why it sounds like Ricky. I could see Rob sounding like him...as long as he doesn't turn all flamboyant

Pause & Play is now reporting that Rob Thomas' Something to Be will be released on 12 April 2005. I hope that means that they are getting a great response from radio and callout to "Lonely No More"! ETA: "Lonely No More" impacts Hot/Modern AC on 14 February -- so, the same week as it impacts CHR/Pop.

First real info on the album. I think it is sounding better and better all the time.
Matchbox Twenty's Thomas on to 'Something'
LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Anyone expecting Rob Thomas' solo album to sound just like a Matchbox Twenty project is in for a bit of a surprise.
A sneak listen to many of the finished tracks from "... Something to Be," which bows May 3, offers evidence of Thomas' efforts to showcase musical facets not displayed in his work with Matchbox Twenty.
First single "Lonely No More," which will be released to radio Feb. 14, relies on catchy beats and contemporary production to propel a story of a boy admonishing his lover not to jerk him around. In some ways, it would sound perfectly at home on a Justin Timberlake record, and Atlantic should think about a dance remix.
But just when you think Thomas is trying to grab a younger audience, he goes into "This Is How a Heart Breaks," a heavy drum- and guitar-driven track that is more reminiscent of Genesis. "I'm an Illusion" opens with a sample of Bessie Jones' "Oh Death" before launching into a riveting rock tune where beats insinuate in and out of the melody and a guitar solo by the great Robert Randolph adds even more punch.
As with many of Matchbox Twenty's best lyrics, Thomas' solo material has a hard-edged wistfulness to it. There are some tracks that could be found on a Matchbox Twenty project, such as the lovely ballad "Ever the Same," but for the most part, it is an album full of dark corners and heavy beats that, at times, will make you want to dance.

Wow, thanks for the post, Rumors! Great article. Getting me excited! I like the whole positive tone of the article. No Carlos Santana, huh? I thought I had read that he was going to be part of it. And this is the first I've heard of a Robert Randolph connection. Very interesting. Go Rob!

I'm happy that the album is not going to be only rock or only pop.. in my opinion, Rob Thomas has one of the best voices in music today and I really hope that he gets to shocase his versatilty with his debut solo album.

Rob's vocal coach actually responded to some e-mails from fans from the MB20 site a while back. Here's what she said: "Typically, I am not at liberty to discuss the particulars of the clients that I work with. And since Rob is not directly in front of me just now so that I can honestly answer your question, I will tell you that he's done alot of work most recently on his high end falsetto so as to have more upper end range for his new solo cd effort, and he's singing better than ever. " "Regarding Rob's new solo effort, I will tell you that it's a great record!! I am personally very excited about it because I feel like he's singing better than ever and that this is truly a solo endeavor - it's not just another Matchbox record minus the band, it's really a Rob Thomas solo album - the songs are GREAT and I believe folks are gonna love it. As it gets closer, I can't wait to hear this.
Is anyone a bit surprised this hasn't leaked at ALL yet? The First Listen is only a few days away, but still...well, I guess alot of songs that do First Listen never leak beforehand.
Rob is one of my favourite male vocalists, if not vocalists period, and I've loved almost all the MB20 singles that have been released since I remember them in 1997 or so. (as well as Smooth of course)
There's no way I will buy his album, just because I've given up on buying albums, but if I still did, this would definitely be one I'd cop.
I'm not so sure about the "hip hop" thing, that sounds kinda whack but I'll have to hear it first.
See, the "Not anything like MB20" kinda excites me but also kinda scares me. Im not a hardcore fan or anything but I hope this doesn't sound whack, like a TOTAL departure. I'll have to hear it and give it a chance first though...can't say anything until I hear.

Anyone know if this single is being released just to Pop or to Hot AC too? I've read several posts on the MB20 board about people contacting their radio stations and getting replies that the song will start airing this Tues or Wed. But I'm not sure what kind of station they listen to. I checked some of the charts and I still don't see Lonely No More listed under going for adds.
One person got a reply from their DJ and the guy said that he thinks people will really be surprised by the song. I'm assuming that means it will have a very different sound than what we're used to from MB20. Sounds good to me!

Like I said, for me, I dont know if the "so different from MB20" is a good or a bad thing.
I would definitely think the song is being sent to Hot AC.

I would assume Hot AC would eat this up faster than CHR\Pop considering Matchbox Twenty to Hot AC is like Eminem or Madonna to POP, anything put out surges to the top of the charts.

Man, I really am tired of waiting for this one. All of the reviews of the song that I've heard have been positve...So I'm hoping this is a great album. All I know is, if this gets delayed from being released...Wow, I will be upset!

Hope it's worth it! I am just listening to Gwen Stefani's solo and find I'm very disappointed it in. So, I'm a bit worried about how Rob's solo will be. Hope it's not as "blinged" out as Gwen's (but then Rob doesn't have a clothing line to push).

I know it's annoying, but there have been much longer delays than that in the history of music.

A friend of mine, who have heard a clip of some of the songs, says it's going to be a huge hit and that MB fans won't be disapointed.. Rob's not going into a complete different direction.

Yeah, I know, but to a diehard MB20 fan it's torture! And I was just reading about Boston and how it took so long for them to follow up their monster album from the 1970's. And that the main guy in the band was so anal about each and every thing that it took like six years to release a follow-up. Now that's something to complain about! ;)

Here's another DJ e-mail response about Rob's first single Lonely No More. Man, this is getting me so intrigued! Can't wait to hear it!
"YES, I've heard the new Rob Thomas single (some record company execs played it for us), but it doesn't get released 'til Tues. or Wed. (can't remember which one) this week - I can't say for certain, but when we get it, I'm pretty sure we'll be playin' it
it's EXCELLENT!!!!! I love it! it's not like a Matchbox Twenty song... it's more like Justin Timberlake meets Enrique Iglesias with Rob's awesome songwriting and vocals - it's really great
I'm sure you'll love it too, so keep an ear out for it early this week on the MIX"
