Celebrating Birthdays Today: Phil Everly (1939) 69 years old Dolly Parton (1946) 62 years old
NOTES: Phil Everly along iwth his brother Don, had early rock 'n roll hits that crossed over into the country chart. Their most successful country hit was Wake Up Little Susie (1957 (8 weeks @#1). As a solo artist, Phil's most successful country hit was Who's Gonna Keep Me Warm (1983 #37).
Dolly Parton, a country icon in her own right, has had 110 singles from 1967-2008. Currently she's on the chart with Better Get To Livin' (#50 and hopefully moving up). Her most recent #1 was with Brad Paisley, When I Get Where I'm Going (2006#1). Her greatest hit on the chart was Here You Come Again (1977 #1 for 5 weeks), but most known for I Will Always Love You (1974 #1, 1982 #1 and duet verison with Vince Gill 1995 #15). That song was inspired when the duo with her and Porter Wagoner had gone it's course. (Porter died last year). For those of us old enough to remember Dolly hitting the chart frequently, it's difficult to believe she is 62 today!

Celebrating Birthdays Today: Otis Dewey "Slim" Whitman (1924) 84 years old John Michael Montgomery (1965) 43 years old
Notes: There are those right now who would be laughing at the first name on today's birthdays. Yes, Slim Whitman is still alive and really a country artist. Slim charted 37 singles between 1952-1981. His most successful charted single was Indian Love Call (1952, 3 weeks @#2). His other hits were Secret Love (1954 #2), Rose Marie (1954 #4), Something Beautiful (To Memember)(1971 #6). Slim (and Boxcar Willie) were one of the earilest to sell his records on television in the mid to late 1970's. A bold move which was seen like a novelty thus the reason for the comment at the beginning of this section.
John Michael Montgomery is the younger brother of Eddie Montgomery (Montgomery Gentry) exploded on the country scene in the early 1990's with hits like, Life's A Dance (1993 #4, his first), Be My Baby Tonight (1994 #1), and If You've Got Love (1994 #1). I Swear, originally recoded by All-4-One, went to #1 and spent 4 weeks at #1 in early 1994. John's latest T10 was Letters From Home (2004, 4 weeks @#2). It would be good to see him back on the chart!

Celebrating Birthdays Today: Mac Davis (1942) 66 years old Jim Ibbotson (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) (1947) 61 years old
Notes: Mac Davis charted 30 singles from 1970-1985. His first success was on the pop charts when he hit #1 there with Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me, however this song only hit #26 on the country chart. Yet, his latter success would be ON the coutnry chart. Hooked on Music 91981 2 weeks @#2) was his most successful country hit. Mac's other big hit was Stop and Smell the Roses (1974 #9 pop. #40 country)
Jim Ibbotson plays guitar for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. NGDB first charted with I Saw the LIght (1971 #56, but it was Mr. Bojangles (1971 #9 pop) which was their pop debut. However it was their coutnry singles for which they are famous for. Fishin' in the Dark (1987#1) is the best known song and still played today on country radio. Their other big hits: Long Hard Road (The Sharecropper's Dream) (1984 #1), and Modern Day Romance (1985 #1). The song Partners, Brothers and Friends (1986 #6) was an autographical song about the band and their success.

Celebrating Birthdays Today: Claude Gray (1932) 76 years old Mike Burch (River Road) (1966) 42 years old
Notes: I'm sure the first question asked is: Who are these folks? Today's birthdays go into the obscure list of artists of country music history.
Claude Gray was born in Henderson, Texas and had some early chart success in the early 1960's. His chart success was a song, frankly I never heard before, My Ears Should Burn (When Fools Are Talked About) (1961 3 weeks @#3). The song he charted before the mentioned song, I'll Just Have Another Cup of Coffee (1961 #4), is one I have a recording of.
If you're from Loiuisiana, or have a good memory, you may remember the group River Road. Mike Burch is/was their drummer. They charted with one alburm in 1997 (self titled album River Road), and charted 3 singles from it. I Broke It, I'll Fix It (#48), Nickajack (#37), and Somebody Will (#51). Their only other charted single was in 2000, Breathless (#45).
(After reporting todays birthdays, I'll have to look online to see if there are downloads still available for these two obscure artistsj.

Celebrating Birthdays Today: Dave Rowland (Dave & SUgar)(1942) 66 years old
Notes: Dave Rowland formed the trio, Dave & Sugar, and had 20 charted singles. Their first, Queen of the Silver Dollar (1975 #25), was a unique brand of harmony. The 'Sugar' part of the trio were two female singers, Vicki Hackeman and Jackie Frantz. Golden Tears (1979, 3 weeks @#1) became their biggest hit. After a few changes with the ladies, Dave Rowland went solo in 1982 and the trio broke up. Other hits: The Door is Always Open (1976 #1), I'm Knee Deep in Loving You (1977, 4 weeks @#2), Tear Time (1978 #1) and Fool By Your Side (1981 #6).

Celebrating Birthdays Today: Cheryl White (The Whites) (1955) 53 years old Richard Young (Kentuckey HeadHunters) (1955) 53 years old Tracy Lawrence (1968) 40 years old Kevin Denney (1976) 32 years old
Notes: Ladies first since we have two aritsts born in the same year. Cheryl White plays bass for the family trio, The Whites. Hangin' Around was their most successful hit on the charts (1983 #9), they perform still today on the Grand Ole Opry which they joined in 1984.
Richard Young is the brother of Fred Young, who are both members of the coutnry band The Kentucky HeadHunters. Richard plays guitar and has played on their 12 charted hits between 1989-2000. Almost half of their charted hits were remakes of classic country songs. Oh Lonesome Me (origially first by Don Gibson (1958 #1), went to #8 (1990) for the HeadHunters. They are also known for Dumas Walker (1990 #15).
Tracy Lawrence has had a career of memorable hits but it almost wasn't to be as he arrived in Nashville in 1991 and suffered a bullet wound from a shooting. Of course he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Fully recovered he had his first charted single, Sticks And Stones (1992 #1), and from then on, you just knew he was due for many more #1's. The Bobby Braddock written, Time Marches On (1996 3 weeks @#1) is Tracy's most recognized song. Of course we can't forget his most recent #1, Find Out Who Your Friends Are (with Tim McGraw & Kenny Chesney). Currently he is charting with Til I Was A Daddy Too, which at this posting is at #44 with 6 weeks on the chart.
Kevin Denney has had limited success on the chart between 2001-03. This singer/songwriter/guitarist has charted with for following singles: That's Just Jessie (2002 #16), Cadillac Tears (2002 #30), It'll Go Away (2003 #43), and A Year At A TIme (2003 #44).

Celebrating Birthdays Today: Irlene Mandrell (1956) 52 years old
Notes: Although she never had a charted single, Irene Mandrell is the youngest of the Mandrell Sisters. She appeared on Barbara's TV Variety Show "Barbara Mandrell & The Mandrell Sisters" from 1980-82. Irlene's character on the show was the 'dizzy blone'. Yet, she musically is just as talented as her older sisters.

Celebrating Birthdays Today: Jeannie Pruett (1937) 71 years old Norma Jean (Beasley) (1938) 70 years old Tammy Cochran (1970) 38 years old
Notes: Jeannie Pruett charted in the 1970's and early 80's but is most famous for her signature song Satin Sheets (1973, 3 weeks @#1). After this song, she had may non T10 hits until 1980. Then she rebounded with three consecutive T10 hits: Back To Back #6, Temporarily Yours #5, and It's Too Late #9, all charting in 1980.
Norma Jean Beasley charted mainly in the 1960's but much limited success than Jeannie Pruett. Norma Jean's highest charted hit was part of a trio with Bobby Bare & Liz Anderson, The Game Of Triangles (1966 #5). As a solo artist, her highest hit was Go Cat Go (1964 #8).
Tammy Cochran, the third of the three females celebrating birthdays today, hit highest with Angels In Waiting (2001 #9). Locally here, she is from Austinburg, Ohio in Ashtabula County, and she gets lots of airplay from the local station here. Yet, her new material still sounds good but country radio is deaf.

Celebrating Birthdays Today: Don Everly (1937) 71 years old Julie Roberts (1979) 29 years old
Notes: As mentioned last month when brother Phil celebrated his birthday (Jan. 19th.), the Everly Brothers were successful on both the Pop/Rock and Country Charts in the 1950's and early 1960's. Wake Up Little Susie (1957, 8 weeks @#1) was their most successful hit on both charts.
Julie Roberts, so far, has had limited success. She has had only three charted singles: Break Down Here (2004 #18), The Chance (2004 #47), and Wake Up Older (2005 #46)

Celebrating Birthdays Today: Howard Bellamy (The Bellamy Brothers) (1946) 62 years old
Notes: HowardBellamy, the older brother, along with David Bellamy formed the Bellamy Brothers and their first single Let Your Love Flow (1976) went to #1 on the Pop chart and #21 on the country chart. Strangely, their most successful country hit, If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body (Would You Hold it Against Me?), went the opposite way as the song is their most noted effort on the country chart (3 weeks @#1) yet only got to #39 on the Pop chart. (It was their last effort on the Pop chart).
Other known hits by the Bellamy Brothers: Sugar Daddy (1980 #1), Do You Love As Good As You Look (1981 #1), Redneck Girl (1982 #1), I Need More Of You (1985 #1), and Kids of the Baby Boom (1987 #1)

Remembering Those Born Today: Henson Cargill (2/5/1941-3/24/2007) 66 years
Celebrating Birthdays Today: Claude King (1933) 75 years old Sara Evans (1971) 37 years old
Notes Charting from 1961-1977, Claude King is most noted for his 1962 hit Woverton Mountain (9 weeks @#1). The song also resulted with an answer song by Jo Ann Campell (I'm the girl On) Woverton Mountain (1962 #24). Claude's original song also hit #6 on the Pop chart. His other big hits were Big River, Big Man (1961 #7), The Comancheros (1962 #7), Tiger Woman (1965 #6), and All For The Love of a Girl (1969 #9).
Henson Cargill's footnote in country music history is his signature song Skip A Rope (1968, 5 weeks @#1). The recognizable opening guitar and echoing in stereo snapping fingers is unforgettable. Strangely after his amazing debut single, his only ohter T10 chart appearance was in 1969 with None Of My Business (#8). His last T40 appearance was in 1980 with Silence on the Line (#29).
WIth her debut with True Lies (1997 #59), Sara Evans has had many T10 and #1 hits. Her first #1 was No Place that Far (1998) but A Real Fine Place to Start (2005). is her most successful. Sara currently charts with Some Things Never Change at #57.

What else is there to say about Garth Brooiks. He dominated the charts in the 1990's, comes back and debuts at #1 last year [debatable in some opinions], and currently @#19 with Workin' For a Livin' (with Huey Lewis).
