In 1979, he charted iwth his future wife, Louise Mandrell with Reunited (#13). This song was a country version of the pop hit by Peaches & Herb. In 1991, R.C. and Louise were divorced.
Larry Gatlin (1948) 60 years old The oldest brother of the Gatlin Brothers, Larry Gatlin began charting in 1973 with Sweet Becky Walker (#40). His first number one was in 1978 with I Just Wish You Were Someone I Love. It wasn't until 1979 when the rest of the brothers got recognized on the record label as Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers Band. After that, everything changed when their first single together shot up to number one, All The Gold In California. As a recognized trio, the Gatlin Brothers charted with their biggest number one hit, Houston (Means I'm One Day Closer to You) in 1983. They may not have had many number ones, but they were constantly in the T10 during the 1980's.
Ty Herndon (1962) 46 years old Boyd Tyrone Herndon began charting in 1995 and for the next 7 years released 17 singles. What Mattered Most, the debut single, went straight to number one. His next number one became his biggest hit, Living In A Moment (1996). Two years later, Ty would have his most recent number one with It Must Be Love (1998). His last charted hit was A Few Short Years (2002 #56).

Remembering Those Born Today: Dave Dudley (May 3, 1928 - December 22, 2003) 75 years Born David Pedruska in Wisconsin worked as a DJ at a number of radio stations in wisconsin, Idaho, Iowa and Minnesota before starting a music career. He is know as the pioneer of the 'truck driving' songs. Dave first charted in 1961 with Maybe I Do (#28) but it was his third single, Six Days On The Road (1963 #2) that put him on the map with truck drivers everywhere. Dave had many T10 singles in the early 1960's: Cowboy Boots (1963 #3), Mad (1964 #6), Truck Drivin' Son Of A Gun (1965 #3), and What We're Fighting For (1966 #4). What is strange is that Dave's most successufl song was not about truck driving. The Pool Shark (1970) was his only number one hit. Dave placed singles on the chart until 1980 with moderate success. Dave dies of a heart attack in 2003.
Today's Country Birthdays: Scott 'Cactus' Moser (Highway 101) (1957) 51 years old Scott is the drummer for Highway 101 as they placed 17 singles between 1987-1993. Brad Martin (1973) 35 years old Brad released only three singles in 2002-03 and only one hitting the T40: Before I Knew Better (2002 #15). His other two singles were Rub Me The Right Way (2002 #51) and One Of Those Days (2006 #50).
Eric Church (1977) 31 years old Eric has had five singles since debuting on the country chart in 2006. How 'Bout You (2006 #14) is his highest charted position so far. Currently he is at #49 with His Kind Of Money (My Kind Of Love)

Remembering Those Born Today: Al Dexter (May 4, 1905 - January 28, 1984) 78 years Clarence Albert Poindexter was born in Troup, Texas and was one of Western Swing's most successful bands. Their first charted single topped Billboard's first country chart, Pistol Packin' Mama (1944). This song is also in the Grammy Hall of Fame. Although the first country chart only had 10 songs listed, Al Dexter & His Troopers were on top seven times of their 16 singles. Guitar Polka (1946) spent 16 weeks at number one and by far is their best number one song. Their last appearance on the chart came in 1948 with Calico Rag (#11). By this time, the charts had 15 songs and Western Swing had begun to fade. Al passed away in 1984.
Today's Country Birthdays: Randy Travis (1959) 49 years old Randy Traywick was the CMA Horizon Award winner and lived up to that honor when we entered the charts in 1979. Yes in 1979 he had one single, She's My Woman (#91). Yet his constant appearance on the chart began in 1985, when On the other hand entered the chart. However, this song fell off and the song 1982 entered in 1986. After 1982 went to #6, On the Other Hand reentered the chart to now rise to number one. Randy has had 16 number ones and Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart (1990) is the most successful among them. Currently, Faith in You, his next single is about to enter the T60.

Today's Country Birthdays: Jack Blanchard (1942) 66 years old Jack Blanchard and his wife Misty Morgan, teamed up for a number of novelty and unique themed singles in the early to mid 1970's. Their biggest hit was certainly a novelty. Tennessee Bird Walk (1970) spent two weeks at number one. Their follow-up, Humphrey The Camel peaked at #5 also in that same year. Some of their other novelty singles include: Fire Hydrant #79 (1971#46) The Legendary Chicken Fairy (1972 #39) The Cockroach Stomp, an uncharted song with a 1950's early rock melody that many people have heard on the radio novelty show, The Dr. Demento Show.

Remembering Those Born Today: " Mother" Maybelle (Addington) Carter (May 10, 1909 - October 23, 1978) 69 years. As the mother of "The First Family Of Country Music"; Maybelle Carter along with her husband Alvin Pleasant (A.P.) Carter and their daughters, Helen, Anita, and June became the first famous recoding group in country music history. Their songs ranged from old folk songs, gospel/insprirational, and ballads brought country music to the general public. Their performances on radio in the South presented their music into the homes everywhere. Among their early hits were Bury Me Under The Weeping Willow (1928), Wildwood Flower (1928), I'm Thinking Tonight Of My Blue Eyes (1929), and the infamous Will The Circle Be Unbroken (1935). Laster, the women returned to singing in the 1960's as part of their son-in-law's (Johnny Cash) road show begining in 1961. Mother Maybelle died in 1978.

May 11th.(Mother's Day 2008)
Today's Country Birthdays: Mark Herndon (Alabama) (1955) 53 years old What can be siad for the grpup Alabama, they dominated the charts during the 1980's and the 1990's. They placed 78 singles from I Wanna Be WIth You Tonight (1977 #78) to I'm in The Mood (2002 #48). Between then, Alabama went to the top of the charts 31 times, 20 of those times in consecutive order from 1980-1987. However theiir most successful charted hit came in 1990 with Jukebox In My Mind (1990, 4 weeks @#1). As for Mark, ironically he was NOT the original drummer. When the group was known as Wild Country in the 1970's, Bennett Cartanian was the original drummer until 1976, then another Owen cousin, Jackie, took over until Mark became drummer in 1979. When Alabama released their frist single in 1977, Mark was not on that recording. Today the group has retired from touring.
Tim Raybon (The Raybon Brothers) (1963) 45 years old Tim and Marty Raybon charted briefly as the Raybon Brothers in 1997. They only had two singles: Butterfly Kisses (1997 #37) and The Way She's Lookin' (1997 #64).
Keith West (Heartland) (1968) 40 years old Heartland has charted only three singles so far in their chart appearances: I Loved Her First (2006 #1), Built To Last (2007 #58), and Once a Woman Gets a Hold Of Your Heart (2007 #52).

Kix Brooks (1955) 53 years old Leon "Kix" Brooks III charted two singles in the early 1980's before teaming up with Ronnie Dunn in 1991. Kix charted with Baby, When Your Heart Breaks Down (1983 #73) and Sacred Ground (1989 #87). As with Brooks & Dunn, their most successful single was Ain't Nothing 'Bout You (2001, 6 weeks @#1). May 13th. Remembering Those Born Today: Jack Anglin (May 13, 1916 - March 7, 1963)46 Years Today's Country Birthdays: Johnnie Wright (1914) 94 years old The duo of Johnnie & Jack, who shared the same birthday (but born two years apart), charted from 1951 till the sudden death of Jack Anglin in 1963. They charted 15 singles and eight of them hit the T10. Their only #1 was in 1954 with (Oh Baby Mine)I Get So Lonely was in 1954. (The Statler Brothers took this song to #2 in 1983). After Jack's death, Johnny Wright continued to chart until 1968. However the success as a duo did not crossover as a solo artist. Johnny had only one T10 which went to #1, Hello Vietman spent three weeks at #1 in 1965. Johnny also married Kitty Wells in 1937 and have been married now for 71 years!

May 15th. Remembering Those Born Today: Eddy Arnold (May 15, 1918 - May 8, 2008) Much has been said during this past week about Eddy Arnold, who passed away a week ago today. I'll Hold You In My Heart (Until I Can Hold You In My Arms) 1947 spent 21 weeks at number one and by far his most successful charted single. Today is has been suggested by RCA records to play the Eddy Arnold song, To Life, and see if it will chart with enough spins to give eddy a charted single in this decade. Thus, making him the only artist to chart in seven decades! Country music has certainly lost a true gentle man.
Today's Country Birthdays:[/size] K.T. Oslin 67 years old Kay Toinette Oslin and her sassy style voice charted 18 singles between 1981-2001. She had four number one hits during this time and Come Next Monday (1990) spent two weeks at number one. Kay's other number ones include, Do Ya (1987 ), I'll Always Come Back (1988) and Hold Me (1989).

Yo Edwin. I wait with great anticipation until we get to my bday, May 17th. It comes and goes and NOTHING! Is my bday sooo uneventful that you couldn't even find a tamborine player from some band in the 80s who peaked at 58 on the charts?

May 18th.Today's Country Birthdays:Leon Ashley (1936) 72 years oldLeon Walton has a unique place in country music history. Leon is the first artist to have complete control over every aspect of his career. From writing, recording, producing and distribution of his recordings. Did I fail mention to perform them as well. His first single, Laura (What's He Got that I Ain't' Got) (1967 #1) was his debut single and on His Own independent record label (Ashley Records). Many country artists recorded this single for their album cuts in the late 1960's and early 1970's. Leon's only other T10 hist was Flower Of Love (1968 #8). Leon married country singer Margie Singleton in 1965. Joe Bonsall (1948) 60 years oldToner of The Oak Ridge Boys, Joe Bonsall's voice has been on every Oaks single since 1973. Of their 48 singles, 17 went to #1. Their first Billie was I'll Be True To You (1978) and their last was No Matter How High (1990) of which is their most successful charted single. Between those two singles, the Oaks has a streak of five consecutive number ones: I Guess It Never Hurts To Hurt Sometimes, Everyday (1984), Make My Life With You, Little Things, and Touch A Hand (Make A Friend (1985). George Strait (1952) 56 years oldWhat can you say about the timeless and greatest country single of our generation, George Strait. You can say he has 106 charted singles and has no sign of closing down. Those of us who remember hearing his debut single on the radio in 1981, Unwound (#6), knew we had a special singer making his debut on the charts. Here's a unique stat, among all his number ones, George failed to reach #1 in the only four years of his career, 1981, 2001, 2003, 2005. Every year other than those, George has made an appearance at #1. George had a string of 11 consecutive #1's from 1986 to 1989. However his greatest charted #1 was in 1990 with Love Without End, Amen which spent five weeks at that position. Even though George starred in the movie Pure Country, he still is shy about giving interviews. His truly a humble performer which characterizes many of the greats from the past. He knows how to pick the songs for his albums and the success shows that. George was in the U.S. Army from 1972 to 1974 and formed The Ace In The Hole band a year later. Not bad for a man who has an agriculture degree and still loves to ride the range and attends rodeos. George's music, style and stage appearance has been a part of country music for 27 years and truly an icon for today's current and up and coming stars. George was CMA Entertainer of the Year in 1989 and 1990 and was inducted into the CMA Hall Of Fame in 2006.

So if my momma had held on ONE more day, I could have shared a bday with the King of Country Music, Joe Bonsall...I mean George Strait. Instead, I got nothing!
Damn momma!
I need to leave my own mark. Anyone have the phone number to Curb? I'm not asking for promotion just a barely charting song. Or how about MCA? I hear 'somebody' there knows how to put payola to good use.
