Why so much hate towards American Life ? This album is criminally underrappreciated, and it was wayyyyyy better than Hard Candy or MDNA. Btw about Frozen, it's one of her best songs. I think she's never reached the level of maturity of Ray of Light ever since tho. I don't know why she tries so hard to act young when the masterpieces that are Bedtime Stories and Ray of Light showed what she's truly capable of. I agree with all of this, although American Life was mature but more groundbreaking than mature since she jumped to new limits. Hollywood and American Life are amaizng Frozen is my faved Madonna song of all time.

Still love this album to death. Nothing Fails stands as one of the best songs of her career to me.

Might possibly be my favorite Madonna song. And the video. No words.

I remember when this song first came out. It felt like such a big deal to me, mainly because it had such an explosive entry on the pop chart but I also remember listening to it a lot and then I bought the CD maxi single the same day I saw Titanic in theatres so I always associate this song with the movie - and maybe that only helped to heighten it for me. Definitely one of my favourite Madonna songs.

There is nothing that sounds like this song. Nothing. It stands alone. It's that brilliant. There were no copycats, because people knew not to bother.
I think it's her best song.
It's really too bad we are now served puerile s**t like Bitch I'm Madonna when she is actually an artist of this calibre. I wish she'd remember instead of trying to keep up with the Snapchat generation.

The music video is amazing. One of my favorites when I was a child Saaame, I remember staying up late when my parents didn't know, and seeing this on TV (back to back with Aqua's 'Lollipop' if I remember?) At the time Video Hits (a now-defunct music video show here) had an 'up late' edition that aired around midnight, and I think that was actually the first time I saw the video for this.

I remember when the video was being promoted on MTV prior to its release. Those awesome images with the sound clips, etc. So mysterious and like nothing I'd seen before, especially from her. A real event.
I set up the VCR timer to record the premiere because I wasn't going to be home from work yet. And it failed. No youtube to fall back on. And I kept missing it. It was so frustrating.
I also remember hearing the premiere on the radio while at work - we listened to a rhythmic station which wasn't particularly pop leaning. That was cool.
Those were the days. Can't believe it was 20 years ago.

This song is groundbreaking, I can't believe Madonna was able to get this to #4 on Pop Songs since it's such a non-pop song compared to her other stuff and other pop hits in 1998. But that was her power at the time.

"You understand, don't pretend to be weak Don't turn away, I need you to speak If I leave you, you'll wish that you had spoken" I still love the released version but it was really nice to hear a different earlier version with lighter production and those other lyrics during the second verse.

I miss the days buying singles that came with remixes.

Heard this song a lot on B96 and remember seeing the video on MTV when I was younger. Think this was my favorite of her 1998 songs/singles. Don't remember hearing the remixes, however, as I'm more used to the single/album version.

Always thought it was so cool to see her morphed into a flock of birds and a dog. Those were the highlights of the video. Definitely one of her best videos by FAR!

25 years later this still sounds amazing. Madonna really did it. Honorable mention goes to The Power of Goodbye.

25 years later this still sounds amazing. Madonna really did it. Honorable mention goes to The Power of Goodbye. These are my two absolute favorite singles from Ray of Light. The opening to Power of Goodbye will never not hit, "Your heart is not open, so I must go". She really gained wisdom and perspective with that record. Have yet to really hear a break-up track that nuanced. Some of her best and most mature work.
