desertflower, how about the the concert performances of BOY or the acapella of "Beautiful Disaster" - was her voice rough then? No. And having the audience sing the high notes? oh come on! She does not. She may have them sing a chorus on one of the singles, etc. but she doesn't focus on the high notes. She's usually singing over a rock band and using a rock voice - on purpose. When she wants to she can sing like an angel, like in the tony bennett performance.

what a fantastic performance tonight...the best by far IMO! oh and she looked smokin hot too boot!
LMAO at dessert trying to say that Kelly has the audience sing the "high parts" of her songs.... I've seen Kelly 7 times so far and the audience is singing along already, Kelly allows them to participate....that's not because she can't sing but rather because she's interacting with her fans in a way that doesn't include crude jokes and mocking them for not knowing the "question of the day" crap that other performers do by way of "entertaining"
OU, I agree....when Kelly wants to sing smoothly, she can...tony bennett, Up to the Mountain are just two recent examples.
I wonder how this performance tonight will affect sales of the single!?

She's not a very exciting performer but she always delivers. Not seen AI yet. I saw her in Indiana & it was was pretty exciting to me & everyone there. She was very into it esp during "SUBG."

Kelly is the best AI ever and proved it with tonights performances. The best she's sounded in a while.
This is kinda a fundamental question but...if NA is doing so well with ratethemusic and has been consistently top 10 on iTunes, and she came from a HUGE album, why is her radio play so bad? I don't really understand the underperformance of Never Again on pop radio. I don't care for the song as much as most of the Breakaway singles but it is selling well so don't people wanna hear it on the radio??

It is not a good song. A disappointment. I feel that if this song was out by anyone else it wouldn't crack Top 100. It's just not catchy....I really hope she comes through with the next single. Holy F, Maroon 5's next single....they will clinch another three albums.

I loved the performance tonight. She was INTENSE! And personally for me, in concert she's one of the best, most exciting singer/performers I've ever seen. She has the audience in the palm of her hand and they're jumping and excited from beginning to end. I've never seen anything like it.
p.s. I want kick that f**ker Clives ass so bad. What a f**kin' bastard. Please excuse my language.

haha, focus! I gave him the finger as he walked on stage... then about five more times during his little "speech". Then I slammed a few doors after he was done. LOL! I was fuming. So I typed up the whole thing to calm myself down. I know, it doesn't make sense but it worked.

It's weird that the Kelly fans are raving about this performance because the 7 people i saw the finale with all criticized her. We all agreed her voice was too hoarse and she didn't seem into the performance.
If there was one person who proved themselves tonight it was Carrie Underwood. She got a standing ovation, while someone else didn't.
Oh and LOL at the whole staged Clive Davis fake clapping 'please go out and buy her album' bit after the performance.

Who is the while someone else? Cause Kelly got a standing ovation from the crowd and the judges too.
But i'll admit this isnt her best performance of NA (my faovrite is Jimmy Kimmel), but then again it wasnt bad.

I'd say this was her 2nd best performance of NA, after Kimmel.
I'm still watching Idol on the West Coast right now, but just had to comment on the whole Clive thing. His little speech was the most disgusting thing ever. Talk about unprofessional. Apparently Carrie's only successful because she's a good little puppet. Taylor and Kelly should shut up and do and sing what Clives want them too. And apparently Clive's in love with Chris D. (Poor Chris D.)
I don't care that he's like a 100, I'd still like to kick Clive's ass. Ugh. Cluck Five.

and legendtina, did you not like the sgt. pepper performance either? Her voice was completely clear, but I'm guessing you hated that one too.
Sorry, I was bored to tears during Carrie's two performances. I'm a fan of her voice, so I like the CD, but I am not a fan of her as a performer.

No she sounded great on those songs. It is her upper register that she seems to be having problems with.
I do wonder how her voice is going to hold up this Summer....the songs we have heard so far are pretty demanding vocally.
I think Clive's Speech was a total passive-aggressive attack on Kelly. JNO

Yeah, boy did Carrie score some brownie points with Clive today!
I think vocals wise, Carrie def did better than Kelly tonight.

JNO agreed. I'd even say more agressive than passive. And it's been noticed all over the place. I hope there are consequences. And I DO wish bad things for him.

Oh and yeah...WTF was Clives speech all about? He was talking about how talented songwriters were and if you let them work on your album they'll give you hits and blah blah blah. Was that supposed to be a jab at Kelly?

We all agreed her voice was too hoarse and she didn't seem into the performance. Everyone I watched the program with (6 people) agreed with what you said. Kelly needs to stop straining her voice by screaming. We couldn't believe how raspy her voice sounded. I seriously doubt Kelly's downloads are going to increase too much after THAT, lol. My brother said, "Is Kelly a chain smoker? What's wrong with her voice?" In all fairness... she sounded MUCH better singing the Beatles' song.

I think Clive was VERY tacky to Kelly, Taylor, and Katharine tonight.

i loved this performance. and to who say her voice is raspy, it wasn't much, lookat her performance athe today show and then this, this sounds much better, the rasp in her voice is just how she performs songs, this wouldt work with crystal clear vocals as the emotion would not be present

I have her CD, and i think she has a good voice, but i thought her performance was so boring, and i didnt really get the vibe that she cared about being there. I was just annoyed with her. It was great to see ruben again, and Kelly surprised me with the little high note in the middle of one of the verses (cant remember which one). I was like WOooohh, Kellaaayyy, fiestyyy.!

I think a lot of people just don't get how rockish songs are supposed to be performed. It's not all about a crystal clear voice, it's about emotion and intensity and attitude all mixed together to make a compelling performance. Kelly knows that and knows how to do it.

Everyone needs to chill with the Carrie vs Kelly thing and just be "Thankful" we have em both. I'm sorry but they are only two great superstars that came out of Idol thus far and they both did great last night. Kelly just ROCKED it out though, so much emotion with Never Again, I don't know what you guys are smoking (excuse that, I should mainly just say legendtina) but her long notes were actually CLEARER than on Kimmel. There were just a little rapsy parts but that's how a rock song goes, look at Pink.. infact it kinda reminded me of her - it was cool but not OVERLY raspy like on Ellen or some parts in Kimmel. I'd call Idol and Kimmel a tie.
Carrie's wasn't bad but wasn't stellar either. I knew it wouldn't sound like the video when she was in Africa, that was studio'ed, but it wasn't smoother and kinda quiet .. almost like she held back ..kinda like Kelly's charity song till the end when she preformed it live. I still liked it though.
Kelly's Sargent Pepper's song was just AWESOME, I wish it was longer she had time cuz she was rocking it with VERY clear vocals, if anyone didn't thing that was awesome they need a hearing aid.
They did great though, this thread needs to chill with Carrie vs Kelly thing... even though the crazy old dilusional man was seeming to even create it last night lol. Did you see Simons face when Clive was speaking? It looked like HE was even bored to tears..no one cares what Clive says anymore, crazy ol coot - who cares. And yah its not like he singled Kelly out, he was all "Yah Love Story, alright - Taylors new one yah but DAUGHTRY OMG, TWO NUMBER ONES (Home is #1? Someone clue me in?) 2.8 MIL SOLD OMG BEST SELLING OF THE YEAR OMG lol. What a diss to Katherine and Taylor!

So well said, Focus ! Love how she can so effortlessly place a rock rasp in NA and then in her second number, just as easily take it away hitting some fierce notes, the highest of the entire night, in a soulful, rock tune. Simply amazing how easy she makes it look, so easy in fact that we forget that most vocalists are just not capable of injecting rasp or even successful performng a heavily emoting rock track...it's that simple ;) To top it off, Kelly can then decide to spans several octaves with pure melisma on her second performance of the night- brilliant !.

Today at 10:23pm, slimjim wrote: Nonsense! Tell that to Amy Lee and Tarja Turunen. As many have mentioned before, female rock must not always equal Amy Lee. Kelly Clarkson is Kelly Clarkson not some Amy Lee cover artist and vice/versa. Thankfully we have had great female rock artists, such as Janis Joplin, Ann Wilson, Pat Benetar, Alanis Morissette, Stevie Nicks, just to name a few, each with her own tone and overall sound. Kelly Clarkson sings with her own originality, her own style, as do each of the above artists. In the case of 'Never Again', Kelly obviously wants to convey a message of anger with her hard-driving lyrics and she clearly feels that adding rasp to the live performance helps the delivery of that very message- and so do I (which likely is why she did not put rasp in her second performance since it wasn't an angry, inflammatory tune) ;)
