What works for one, might not work for another. I think Kelly's pure voice is just too pure for the emotion and conviction behind her 'rockier' songs.
See, like I think that P!nk has an outstanding voice and I LOVE the raspy quality to it. I would even daresay that I enjoy P!nk more than I enjoy Amy Lee (I have no clue who that second person is). Bonnie Raitt. Janis Joplin. I could go on ......
Personally I think the rasp adds a little sumthin sumthin to the songs - an edge. I mean, look at Amy Lee and look at Kelly. Amy is so goth, so 'hard' looking, nobody doubts she's a rocker. Kelly has the sweet, innocent, girl next door looks. If she sings rocks songs in her crystal clear vocals, well, I can hear all the poseur remarks now. Nobody's gonna buy what she's selling - sad but true.
JMO, of course. Different strokes for different folks.

^^ I totally agree Un4. Her Regis and Kelly performance of NA had her pure/clear vocals, and IMO, it just didn't work as well as her performances on Kimmel/Letterman/AI. It sounded pretty, but I just prefer the raspier version.

Tarja is the lead singer for Nightwish. www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAKf1gTx7qMShe is what Kelly wants to be and could have been if she had used her voice properly. I think Kelly has ruined her voice with all the screaming the past 2 years. This is what My December is trying to be. Just look at the MD CD cover. In My Opinion.

^You wish, In my opinion. Its MY OPINION that she's is not. In my opinion, your opinion is wrong. In my opinion, Kelly is better than that wannabe could ever be. In my opinion, you are way too concerned with putting down kelly and may need something other to do. In my opinion, your opinions are way too desperate and negative to be taken seriously. In my opinion, you are way too into what Kelly is doing to not be a fan of yours. But that is only my opinion.

Pop: 21 24 KELLY CLARKSON Never Again 2007 RCA/RMG 2908 3443 -535 15.358
Hot AC: 14 13 KELLY CLARKSON Never Again 2007 RCA/RMG 1626 1578 48 7.688
Poor dying song. *pets it* I doubt even Idol will be able to do much for NA on the Pop charts, but it seemed to have helped her album (according to Amazon), so I can't complain much. :)

interesting that NA is AGAIN the #1 song on ratethemusic's top 40 survey...
the list looks like this.. the info in the brackets is position on CHR/Pop chart on mediabase as of this mornings update and the "bullet")
1. Never again (#24 on CHR/POP with a -535) 2. Makes me wonder (#7 with +317) 3. U&UR hand (#1 +209) 4. Summer Love (#4 +983) 5. Wait for you (#22 +890) 6. Stolen (#30 +31) 7. Thnks fr the mmrs (#21 +547) 8. Give it to me (#3 + 119) 9. What I've done (#27 +269) 10. Home (#6 +770)
I just find it strange that the ONLY song on ratethemusic's top ten chart with a negative bullet is NA and it's been consistently in the top 5 since it debuted on radio. So WHERE exactly are all these radio stations getting their call out information if not from ratethemusic/promosquad? I belong to the music advisory on my local station and they use ratethemusic as I'm sure do many others since it's a NATIONAL survey.
LOL that made me giggle..

LMAO @ the above post....After listening to that youtube link, are you truly serious you honestly believe Taruja "is what Kelly wants to be" (in your own words) ?? Tarja's style is more popera, clearly nothing like Kelly Clarkson or any majour female pop/rock or rock singer. Thanks for free comedy relief ! ;)

All the Kelly Fans try to skew rate the music's ratings. Internet polls are not everything...Apparently radio measures something rate the music does not. People just don't like the song. Why would radio drop a song from "The Queen of Top 40 Radio" after just a couple of weeks? Queen of Top 40...not so much!

LMAO how powerful do you think we are? What does radio measure if not requests and call out information from places like ratethemusic? Kelly's song has consistently been in the TOP 10 countdowns on nightly programs across the country...are we skewing those too? GMAB! KIIS FM top 9@9 Kelly's at #4 www.kiisfm.com/main.htmlz100 #9 on the top 9@9 www.z100.com/main.htmland those are the two biggest stations in the country.... I know more people who like this song than don't like it that's for sure. unless and until another female artist comes along that has a song in the top 10 on radio for 111 weeks (or something like that) I'd say Kelly still reigns as the Queen of Top 40. During the Breakaway era every song that Kelly released went top 10 and as new songs were being released her prior hit wouldn't start really fading until the new one caught up so Kelly had multiple dual top 10s to her credit... Breakaway/SUBG....SUBG/BTHE...... BTHE/BOY.....BOY/WA..... Something is off with the performance of this song on radio....

Sounded great on AI but she always looks so bored. I want to see her bounding round the stage and having fun with the song. If she wants to be a rock singer she should learn how to rock out a little.

I thought I'd add my two cents to the thread...and this coming from a completely unbiased mind.
I do think Kelly fans can be hyper-sensitive about this issue, but I think after Clive Davis' little speech last night praising the 'right' songwriters, producers, hit songs, etc., he may have more to do with the premature demise of NA than skeptics on this thread are willing to believe. He neglected to acknowledge the 3 huge songs that Kelly co-wrote herself, and he basically kissed Daughtry and Carrie Underwood's asses...while ingoring Kelly's accomplishments. He was willing to acknowledge the fact that "Some Hearts" has sold 6 million albums, but failed to mention AT ALL in his entire speech that Kelly sold about the same amount of albums with "Breakaway". (Disclaimer: I am also a fan of Carrie Underwood, so please don't use my own words against me). He used that speech to take personal jabs at Kelly, Simon, and anyone else associated with American Idol or his own team that may feel differently than he does.
If you look at everything from a wider scope: Top song on radio call-outs, regular appearances on individual radio countdowns, and a top downloaded song on Itunes, there is just something not adding up. Granted, downloads haven't been amazing, but for NA to fizzle out at #21 is ridiculous.
The way I see it, if Clive really wanted to this track to go top 10 on pop, he would make it happen. He is the most powerful man in the music industry...and he's dealing with one of the most popular pop singers in the past 5 years. Further reasoning would lead you to believe that he is not pushing this track the way he should be...and with that, possibly trying to exercise his power.
Before last night, I thought that they idea that Clive would sabotage Kelly's career out of spite would be ridiculous, but after hearing how manipulative his speech was, I have to believe something is going on behind the scenes.

I really am not much a conspiracy theorist but after last night's "speech" also, I am starting to wonder if Clive Davis has something to do with airplay of 'Never Again'.....I'm not completely sold but I about 60-70% of the way there....

It's not like Kelly had any negative press or anything...at the end of the day it all came down to the music and you personally attacking me is not going to help this song up the charts. Even BL hit the Top 20 on the pop charts. Kelly, needs to release something worth listening to. This song deserved to FLOP and it did! The Queen of Top 40 Radio?...not so much.

I have the text of it though so I'll PM it to you.

Cheers for that :) I didn't think his speech was too bad, pretty obvious jabs for people like us who have been following this but I doubt many other people would've got it. I love how he said that Carrie has sold 6 million albums in the US alone, like she's actually sold records anywhere else.

I think those in the media that have covered the issue (EW, etc.) picked up on it, but most people probably didn't. My radio station talked about the finale for about 15 minutes this morning and never mentioned Clive. Personally, I think it's for the best. I don't want his comments to add even more fuel to the fire.

Okay, i'm here to add my two cents
A lot of you are saying it doesn't add up why this song would flop on radio yet it's recieved such positive feedback from the public. I'm sorry----but what? Besides the Kellbots, i have not met one person yet who has seemed to enjoy this song. Like yesterday when i was watching AI, one of my friends was like 'I can see why this song flopped', and another 'you got that right...NEVER AGAIN Kelly!'. I'm usually very fast to jump on new music and i always introduce all my friends to the newest songs that got released. The first week NA came out and i put it on a CD, everyone that listened to it would get to half of it and then just skip to the next song. I have not met one person yet, besides myself in my area that has actually given this song a chance (i myself don't think it's a bad song, but it's def lower in quality than anything on Breakaway and i can see the non appeal it has). In my area this song is a huge flop. Haven't heard it on the radio, haven't seen anyone talk about it, or even mention Kelly. It's like she's not even back.
So for Kelly fans to sit here and say things don't add up, that doesn't make sense. Yeah the song is still Top Ten on Itunes, but that doesn't mean people like it. I tunes is a place where established artists get the most success. People download songs just based off of the artists name. If i was a mainstream listener who never heard NA yet and saw it on Itunes Top ten, i would download it too based off of curiosity. And Clive trying to sabatoge Kellys career? Do you know how much promotion and pushes she's given this song?---that also accounts for another part of why it's still in the top ten on I tunes. Out of every song in the Top 100, Kellys song has been performed the most on national television yet it still can only get to #5 there.
Kelly fans might be happy with 'Never Again', but the general public is not. There's no other way around it. She failed to deliver with the 1st single. And as for Clive not talking about Kellys success....why would he? He said 'here's this years report card'. Breakaway came out in 2004, why would he mention it? The purpose of his speech was to talk about the success of the last year, and obviously Carrie and Daughtry are the success stories.

Sorry but those friends sound about as negative and on a mission with those bitter comments as you (guess that's why they are friends though heh). For all we know your friends are Spears and Aguilera megafans and/or dislike Kelly anyway, so these 'points' are moot. Sorry but I've been around people who I have NO idea their music tastes and said at first 'woah that's no SUBG' then second listen 'Rocks! I like it' is the general reaction. Then I ask who they like most or how often they listen to mainstream music, how many Kelly songs they heard ect ect. So for Kelly fans to sit here and say things don't add up, that doesn't make sense. Yeah the song is still Top Ten on Itunes, but that doesn't mean people like it. That's nothing to the constant commercial promo's every hour some other artists and song got like Glamorous or Candyman on iTunes commercials ect. Kelly fans might be happy with 'Never Again', but the general public is not. There's no other way around it. She failed to deliver with the 1st single. Way to not listen, you seem to do that alot, maybe you should chill on talking to your 'friends' about hating Kelly and listen up. Given it WAS Clive so I don't blame your hearing impairment there one bit (who would listen to that crazy ol man, even Simon tuned out) but still Clive WAS talking about Breakaway, talked about 14 million sales and went on and on about 'Breakaway and SUBG' the song writters and hit producers. I thought he was about to announce Max Martin and Dr. Luke on to the stage and give them some kinda life-time achievements award the way he went on about it jez! Nothing about Kelly, not even saying about My December being out in a month, just about her Breakaway material.

The purpose of his speech was to talk about the success of the last year, and obviously Carrie and Daughtry are the success stories. I have to correct your comment: Kelly's television and radio promotion of appearances, interviews, and performances were not organized by RCA/Clive, but rather, by The Firm, her management company. Radio airplay, not appearances/interviews/performances, is an artist's promotion that a record label can choose (or not) to push. As far as Kelly's maintenance of Top 10 status on iTunes/digital downloads is concerned: 'Never Again' has released for sale for ~ 1 month; therefore, I highly doubt it has maintained consistent sales solely "based off of curiosity" as you put it. Clearly the high callout scores, public ratings of the song, and strong sales make one question the etiology of the song's sluggish radio airplay. I think the reasons for 'Never Again''s relatively poor radio airplay are multifactorial: the song is a bit hard and dark for the pop music of today (filled with real upbeat, light tracks by Fergie, Avril, Gwen, Akon, and Rihanna), while still well-liked by callout scores, does not have the ridiculous mainstream appeal of some of her 'Breakaway' tracks, and finally, after last night's speech by Clive, I am not ruling out ( ? intentional ) lack of label support.

LOL So people just randomly toss money at songs they don't even like or haven't heard, based on name alone? With all the FREE downloads out there of any song you want (not to mention you can stream songs FOR FREE at various places on the internet), you REALLY believe this? Come on, you're trying WAY to hard to justify how well this song has done in sales.
Your random friends actually use the word 'flop' when talking about a song? SERIOUSLY?
So wait - they haven't heard the song on radio, haven't really heard ANYTHING about it, but they know it was a flop on radio? Huh? Wouldn't the natural assumption be that the song just came out and not that it must have 'flopped' on radio if they really don't know anything about the song? ???
Maybe the general listening public doesn't like NA and that's why it's not doing well *shrug* I wonder why they use callout and music ratings to even guage a song at all if the rankings are all a 'popularity' contest?
Sorry, dude (or dudette), but I'm not buying that everyone else that ranks songs in music survey's are totally neutral and not fans of SOMEONE (no P!nk fans, no Avril fans, no Timbaland fans). Why rank music survey's if you aren't a fan of music and artists?
Then why did he mention Breakaway at all - let alone being careful only to mention the 2 radio singles that Kelly didn't write on at all, especially since Kelly JUST won an award a few weeks ago for BOY? He was an ass last night - his swipes weren't just at Kelly, they were at anyone that gave him a little fight when it came to songs (Taylor and Kelly) and even at Kat, for some unknown reason. ???
I don't know what's going on with the song - it DOES look odd for it to be up there on ratethemusic and have a negative bullet. I'm a full believer in 'if a song is good, it will get played'. I still stick by that. For whatever reason, the DJ's are chosing not to spin this lots (not radio friendly comes to mind). I think people may like the song but the DJ's are still hung up on what's radio friendly and what's not. *shrug*
*decides to just skip over legendtina's future posts cuz the last one just really stank of agenda with all the doubletalk*

Personally I get SICK of seeing this phrase around here. It's rude and as far as I knew, bashing fan bases isn't allowed...unless it's just Kelly fans who are fair game. LMAO ok so you're discussing with your friends a song that you've been for weeks now, harping on it's flop status? really? who does that? and are your friends regular posters here or on another music board cuz the truth of the matter is the average person doesn't even know the term FLOP for a song.... If I had to guess you've been doing IRL exactly what you do here.... telling anyone and everyone who will listen that this song is a flop. I've met a few people who weren't crazy about the song when they first heard it but then they heard it a few more times and they started really liking it and then I know people who loved it on first listen. I've yet to meet anyone who said they absolutely hated this song, even after giving it a few listens. again allow me to hold in my laughter. where do you live that EVERY PERSON you introduced this song to hated it on first listen.... could it be that you allowed only people who you knew would have a predisposed opinion to hate the song? When this song is rating that high on itunes, TRL, VH1, and other various radio station countdowns I just have a hard time believing that you're not exaggerating just a tad (errr a LOT). again where do you live? podunk USA? This is the same argument that another fanbase was making during the breakaway era...saying Kelly wasn't even talked about in their area, they never heard her songs, she wasn't the superstar that her fans said she was, etc. etc... Seems to me that you're trying REALLY hard to convince us (and yourself) that Kelly's this huge failure and her career is over. It would be laughable if it weren't all so sad. it's not just the "fans" saying it....try reading the actual posts... LMAO really? then who the f is buying this single, dogs, cats and other various creatures who don't qualify as people? that's the strangest comment I've ever seen. I mean her video is at #6, her single #7 on itunes, it's at #1 or 2 on TRL, it was #4 on VH1, it's #1 on ratethemusic....how can anyone say that doesn't mean people like the song? good lord.. that's partially true but the reviews of this song are OVERWHELMINGLY positive on itunes so explain that? oh wait, it's the kelly fans skewing the results... and that's possibly what is happening.... but like I said the reviews written on itunes are pretty positive.... there are a few bad ones but the majority love the song.... and I don't think 240K downloads is from curiousity and it wouldn't be maintaining that high a rating 3 weeks later based just on novelty. it got to #2....right behind Maroon 5....you only dig your hole deeper when you spout facts that are easily proven false. wow you must be exhausted, having polled the entire general public and all Like I said I know more people who like this song than don't... you happen to know more people who hate it.... are your people more right than mine? NO! Kelly failed to deliver? debut at #8 on billboard hot 100? sorry but the general perception of this song is that Kelly has another HUGE HIT on her hands.... I know that seems to upset you but that's the reality. as for whether Clive should've mentioned Kelly's success, well he could've easily mentioned her winning song writer of the year from ASCAP for BOY...but then that would defeat his whole "professional songwriters" speech he was shoving down everyone's throat last night. oh and newsflash...Carrie's CD isn't this year either.... that was released in 2005.... and hasn't sold as many copies as Breakaway (either in the U.S. or worldwide)....

Thanks Mike. I'd never heard of them. I was reading some of the comments and this chick isn't with them anymore, is that right?
This is what Kelly wants to be? What interview did she say that in? I've heard her cite Pat Benatar and Janis Joplin as influences, but never this chick or band? I think it's more that this is what YOU want Kelly to be?
