Like someone said, maybe this era is mostly going to be played on Hot AC and not Pop.

You know what would be an even bigger winning situation? If this song is still in the top 40 when the album comes out. I predict it will be #39 with an amazing -250 bullet! We have a hit on our hands!

Did this reach the top 20? It reached Top 20 @ Billboard Pop 100 Airplay (R&R) and its already resurging at Hot AC and near top 10. Did someone say something above me? No? Alright, cool thought so.

This song did extremely well. Why are people here saying its a flop? Anything that goes Top 40 is a hit. Period.

This song did extremely well. Why are people here saying its a flop? Anything that goes Top 40 is a hit. Period. Um... to the bolded statements... no, and definitely not. Extremely well? Really? So how well did BTHE, SUBG and BOY do? Extremely super duper fantastically well? This song underperformed, and for an artist to have 5 top 5 singles in a row and have a song not even hit top 20 is definitely a flop. For a new artist, it certainly would not be. You cannot make a blanket statement saying "anything that goes top 40 is a hit" because it's simply not true, there are other factors involved.

Are you saying if the song spent one week at 40 and then collapsed you would be saying it did extremely well, is a hit, promoted the album perfectly, etc...?

It peaked at #8 on the Hot 100. That is a hit. Pink fans said the same thing about Stupid Girls. A sales hit does not equal an airplay hit and an album needs an airplay hit to succeed 99% of the time. One single selling well enough to peak inside the top 10 or 20 will not automatically offset the lack of promotion given by a flopped airplay single. No ifs ands or buts about it.

It peaked at #8 on the Hot 100. That is a hit. Ok thats a completely different statement from "Anything that goes top 40 is a hit. Period." And even that isn't true. Digital sales can skew the actual popularity of song.

A song has to be popular in order for it to sell. Once again, same argument Pink fans gave and it was her biggest flopped album yet....UNTIL she got an airplay hit. Im not saying no one likes Never Again or that it is a flop. Obviously folks do like it. However, it is delusional to think that just because it is selling well that it will promote the album even being an airplay flop. Someone mentioned that the next single should go for adds like..in the beginning of August because Never Again is doing so well. Uhm? No. I mean, seriously, do you guys want her to lose all momentum for this album? Want her to flop in sales? Her name, love for her older music, and a sales hit will only carry this album so far. She needs an airplay hit at some point in time for the album to have longevity and sell well beyond the first month.

Without any airplay hit you think she will sell millions? Fine...we will see :) (Though, hard to test because I have no doubt she will wrangle an airplay hit from this album, but in the case she doesnt we will see if that top 8 peak for Never Again will send her 2-3 times platinum!)

Thank you so much Love Plastic Love...it is very well true. Without an airplay hit, your album is not going to sell. Airplay is what sells albums. All digital sales do is keeps the song a hidden secret. Someone downloads it on their computer and the song stays stuck inside their house. Hearing a song all over the radio when with friends, in the mall, at work, in school, at the clubs...now that's a HIT! Radio songs are inescapable. They are the best way to let people know that someone's in or someone's popular. This is something that has not happened to 'Never Again'.
I really don't understand why it's SO HARD for some people to just admit that Kelly Clarksons single flopped. Why is it so hard to say it? It's not going to be the end of the world. The Christina fans admitted it when 'Candyman' Flopped, the Beyonce fans admitted it when 'Ring the Alarm' flopped, the Britney fans admitted it when her entire third album singles flopped, but why the heck are these fans here having such a hard time accepting the truth and moving on? It's like they are giving CPR to a person who's been dead for weeks hoping they can still come back alive. Just let it go. It's over....there will be better things in the future. Life moves on. Trust me. It will all be okay.

^because its not over. i dont think it will bounce back significantly but guess what? this single has been out for a little over a month and thats not enough time to say it flopped. Why is it so hard for people to understand that concept? Candyman was declared a flop and "accepted" by fans months after its release.
Amy Winehouse has had no airplay hits; she has a potential with "Rehab" but still hasnt had one in the US and guess what? She's still in the Top 20 with album sales. Yes, an album can sell without radio hits.

It does seem that attitudes and opinions are out of both sides of mouths depending on who the artist is. I've seen the same people in other threads declaring similiar events as flops or definitely not hits or hit worthy, yet in here it's the opposite. Don't really understand a different criteria for a different artist. No one should be entitled to a "hit" just on name alone. The song is either worthy or not regardless who it is. This song can't be decided yet because as long as it stays around and the CD has yet to drop, there is just no way of knowing what it will end up. Until it disappears it isn't over -- but the same applies to every other artist with a song in the charts in similiar circumstances.

No air play = no sales?
Didn't Noeah Jones sell 9 million in America alone with out a single top 20 hit? Kelly's name and the hype ALONE will move units... how much? We will see.
How the hell can someone say an album wont sell when we've never heard it. People dont make sense.
We wont say it flopped cause it didn't. Nerly top 20 on Top 40, nearly Top 10 on AC, Top 5 on Pop, Top 10 on Hot 100... what more do you want? Is it as big a hit as some of her other singles?? No, is it a hit, though? Yes, it very well indeed is.
