Lol, are you serious Debbie?
It's easy to say "nobody really cares about her any more" as if the simple act of stating it makes it fact, but my experience is to the contrary. And that's all we have right, are individual experiences and opinions?
Most of the people I know, close friends to acquaintances and co-workers, really enjoy Katy Perry. I know people who went to Warped Tour just for her in the height of IKAG, and have bought tickets miles away to see her headlining tour this Spring (after the uptempos) since she's not playing in our area at all.
I think it's easy for a lot of people to dismiss her because she's new and there are people like Pink, Kelly and even Avril who've been around for a while. I mention Avril because I remember people saying the exact same thing about her first album and look at the follow-ups we've had. Sure, her third album was a digression in image and 'artistic credibility' but I really feel she was a strong talent with her first album and no one ever expected her to be able to continue to have success.
This song is still rising and people are acting as if they're certain she's doomed for failure. It's unfortunate when people ignore the fans of an artist and make the place for discussing their music one that feels negatively dogmatic.

Are you serious? I know I'm serious. You can have an opinion, but I can't because I am not a fan of hers? No, that won't fly. "Negatively dogmatic"? Do you know what you are saying? It's a message board. Be prepared for people who have other opinions and who don't just heap praise on artists.
It's quite ironic that you compared her to the musical acts who she is essentially trying to be. Let's just say she is taking her queues from them. I think after Avril's first album, it was clear she would be around for a while because there was only one artist like her and she was still quite different. Now, it has become somewhat of a game that cannot be played when the leaders who popularized the game are in the game.
I could not care less about your personal experiences to be blunt and maybe crass. I am writing from my own experience and that is that people know her singles but don't buy her album. People bought the albums of the artists you listed, which suggested there was actually substance there.

It's not that you "have an opinion" dear, it's that someone says something and your rebuttal is "No she's not. she will be gone by the next album. One album wonder. nobody will care about her come next time. come to think of it. nobody really cares about her any more after two up tempos... Thats just the truth." Have an opinion Debbie, but let other people have there's without ridiculous assertions of knowing the truth. If THAT were true we'd all be coming to you for a lot more advice.
Anywho, back to the opinion slinging, I heard this on the radio for the first time about two days ago and haven't heard it since. My radio is pretty slow though, here's hopin'.

Fergie, Rihanna, Jordin, now Katy . . . album sales seems to be the ignorant insult that keeps on popping up here. When will people realize that 700k for a brand new artist with two hits is completely normal?

Fergie and Rihanna actually sold quite a bit in album sales. However Jordin's album sales are weak.

But around the time of their third single they were both less than 1 million, the same as Jordin and Katy now. Jordin's album sales are not weak. As far as I know she's in the top five best-selling new artists of 2008. They just look weak compared to Alicia, Beyonce, and Britney, who have fanbases used to buying physical copies of their music.

And Fergie totally doesn't count because she had 2 albums with BEP. People loved the bitch regardless.

I'd say sales less then a million sold with atleast two major airplay hits and her as the Idol winner those sales are weak. I believe even Cook is doing better then her sales wise with less airplay...

That's one exception. Another would be Miley Cyrus. But back in 1999, just because Britney sold 10 million albums doesn't mean it was bad to sell 7 million. The new 10 million copies is about 4 million, and the new platinum is about 500k. I don't understand why people don't accept this yet, because the proportions of average-sales-per-hit match up almost perfectly.

It's 2009, not the 90s or early 00s where debut artists can sell over 10 million copies worldwide.

Part of the reason is the genre. Both Jordin and Katy are very teeny pop, the target audience is probably the set that has stopped buying records and is ripping them from the internet. Those who cross genres to AC have a much bigger record buying audience, this audience is the ones that want to listen to HQ music on HQ systems... they want the CD's. They are more likely to buy stuff like coldplay.

I would agree with that. This probably isn't the place to discuss it, but I don't believe in the whole "singles artist" thing. I believe in the "singles era" thing. But there is not a quality-related reason why some artists sell a lot of albums and others sell more singles. It is directly related to how established the artists in questions are with people who became music buyers before and after the beginning of the singles age (ie when singles became available for purchase digitally).

I can't believe this is moving so fast. As usual, my CHR is no where near it.

This probably has enough to get on the Hot 100 this week (unless it already is - haven't really been paying too much attention).

I thought her first two singles were catchy. I was just listening (not really watching) VH1 and had to turn around and find out who that was singing so badly. It was a new video of Katy Perry. I assume it was this song. The vocals are horrible.
