Hey guys I have been on vacation the past 5 days but Im so happy to come back and fine the picky Zazie himself like this!!! Sbp17 is right...screw #1 ;) You're going to fine me? What for? Anyway, I won't pay. I'm broke. But I'm happy to enjoy a Carrie song, and if you guys are willing to tolerate an old-fashioned country fan joining her contempo-fanbase for awhile, I'll be happy to be on board. And I will track down the "duet" with Randy tonight. By the way, does Vince get any credit for ITYS on the album, besides a listing as backup singer? I'd be surprised if he did, but it's a possibility. Always glad to see Vince on the chart, even if it's in a helping role. He's probably sung backup on 200 CD's over the years....

Yes, this is what I heard on the radio. Not surprising, because it was posted on YouTube by Jesse Tack and he's the DJ on the Cincinnati radio station that played it the other day. It all makes sense now.

Hey there Carrie fans, in this video interview, near the end, Kelly Clarkson is asked who her favorite American Idol winner is after the first season, and she says Carrie: de.youtube.com/watch?v=GKHNyKyknzAThe interview took place earlier this week in Scotland, so it's a good plug for Carrie overseas.

That's impossible. Kelly couldn't like Carrie. That would render the fan war even more pointless and infantile than it already is.

Kelly likes Carrie. Carrie likes Kelly, so that works out. I think there's always been a connection there, with their music and success. They can relate to each other better than the other winners. jmo

Let's get back on topic, folks. Thanks. By the way, does Vince get any credit for ITYS on the album, besides a listing as backup singer? I'd be surprised if he did, but it's a possibility. Always glad to see Vince on the chart, even if it's in a helping role. He's probably sung backup on 200 CD's over the years.... Vince is only credited for background vocals on "I Told You So," Zazie. At the time, I thought it was in an effort not to "pimp" out his involvement in a grab for credibility, but on the other hand, it would have been nice if he could chart on the strength of this. And yes, Vince has been really generous over the years in lending his voice in support of others. I'm really pleased to hear that you like Carrie's version of this song, by the way!

Just heard this on a small city radio station that is usually way behind in adding new songs. The song usually has to be at the very least top 40 and to hear it before the actual adds date was very suprising. Sounded amazing and the DJ seemed to be so excited by the release of this song as a single.

I like the direction she's taken, in recording this and also in releasing it to radio. (I'm guessing she had some say in that. I don't really know, but she's such a big star.) I like the potential her version shows. I enjoy hearing the song.
I don't want to misrepresent myself as a sudden convert to fandom. Randy's version of the song contains such subtlety and evokes such strong emotion; I'm not seeing her as capable of that at this point. The original was so good, and she's not in that league. Yet. She shows signs of being able to dial back the shrillness and over-emoting that characterized all her other singles.
I can see her working towards a more subtle style, and -- who am I to be patronizing of a #1 record machine, but I can't help it -- I think she ought to be encouraged to pursue this style of singing. So, having released it, I hope she gets the reward of her 5th #1 from one studio album, tying Rodney Crowell's record and creating yet another remarkable achievement for such a young singer. If this doesn't chart well, God knows when we'll see her releasing this old-fashioned style of music again.

I can see her working towards a more subtle style, and -- who am I to be patronizing of a #1 record machine, but I can't help it -- I think she ought to be encouraged to pursue this style of singing. Even though I wouldn't describe Carrie's previous singles in quite the same way as you did, Zazie, I agree with what you're saying in the quoted portions. What it comes down to for me is that I think the old-fashioned style of music is both what best showcases Carrie's voice -and- the closest match for her natural phrasing tendencies. As someone who really likes Carrie's voice (especially the vulnerability it can convey), the suspense for me comes from a) whether Carrie will agree with my assessment of her strengths as a vocalist and b) how commercial pressures will impact the extent to which she records and releases music that hews closer to a purer country style that may suit her best. Patty Loveless already raised the latter point in an excellent interview done by Blake Boldt over at Country Universe, suggesting that the pressure/desire to be on the radio and to sell records can impact the kind of music someone like Carrie makes, regardless of what is in her heart. As a side note, that whole Patty interview is worth reading, as she discusses the ups and downs of the last few years, her reason for singing the songs on Sleepless Nights and what she is looking to do next. I'd like to think that as Carrie matures through touring and experience, she will gain a greater understanding of her strengths (and not see her strength as the ability to blow the roof off a place by belting). As I've said and now repeated a few times, I'm encouraged by the growing maturity in Carrie's interpretive performances of songs like "I Told You So" throughout her tour. The next step, though, is to pick material that gives her room to dig deep and reach for the more subtle emotive touch. That is a matter not just of lyric, but of sound...I think Carrie's voice would take better to melodies with a bit of Western swing in them. She can sing this arena rock-infused contemporary country fine (in my view), but I don't think it's her best sound. Of course, there isn't a lot of contemporary Western swing on country radio at the moment. So on top of meeting the challenge of fleshing out her best sound, Carrie may find herself faced with the challenge of figuring out how to make her best sound current. It's an issue that continues to vex a more fully realized artist like Lee Ann Womack, so it's not something I expect Carrie to work out on her next album, or even the one after that. It will be a process, but I do hope that Carrie tries. In any case, I'm also trying to resist the temptation to read too much into the choice of "I Told You So" as a single. I do hope it signals that Carrie and her team are recognizing the value of releasing more mature and subtle performances from her (and also that this constitutes recognition of what she sings better). I like the idea that, while many of the format's females are releasing power pop/arena rock-inflected music, Carrie is going for something a little more old school (though so as to not overstate the case, I still think the production of this single has a contemporary sheen to it). So yeah, hopefully "I Told You So" does very well for Carrie. It would be nice to see this good decision pay off and then influence the course of her future recordings for the better.

^^"It would be nice to see this good decision pay off and then influence the course of her future recordings for the better".
Just to add: If Carrie does succeed in making this single a nice hit, don't be surprised if other "contemporary" country artists jump on the bandwagon.

That sounds great, and I hope it happens, but I'm not sure one single release will change the direction of country music. It's nice to see that there are people who do hope that happens.
Thanks for the link to the Patty interview. I'll look forward to reading that -- I saw her on Conan O'Brien the other day singing Hank Williams and just lighting up the stage. Her comments on the balance between making music and making money would interest me for sure.

Both Dallas mega country stations are playing ITYS which is unusual because they usually wait for the official release before playing her songs.

Dudley-- great post! I agree it will be interesting to see what direction Carrie chooses for her next album. I personally would love a few more softer, traditional songs on the album, as long as she also releases some upbeat fun, radio friendly songs like Wasted, AAG, etc- to keep her on the radio, and ensure some level of commercial success. More importantly, for concerts, you need to continue to have a good balance of Fast songs people can dance to, and the pretty soft ballads.
Since we are fairly sure Carrie may have recently bought herself the new Steinway piano that she always wanted, I am secretly hoping this means she might write some songs at her home, maybe even one that is a soft piano ballad so she can include that in her tour set. I think Carrie could go really far with at least one soft, pretty piano type ballad on her cd. There would still be plenty of room for fast songs too.
I personally wish Carrie would write a song with Miranda, and duet together. They are friends and both have so much talent-- that it would be a great mix.

This will debut in the top 40 on Billboard. I'd say it could be anywhere from #35 to #39.

It all makes sense now. The duet version of this reminds of a few that the country station I used to listen to used to make. I remember when Eric Clapton had a hit with "Change The World" they made a duet with Wynonna's version. They also did an interesting combination of Dolly Parton and Whitney Houston singing "I Will Always Love You" when she had the big hit with it in the early 90s. Carrie's version seems off to a really good start. I think it sounds really nice on the radio, though I agree that it's probably wise not to read all that much into her single choice, though it is promising that she/her label aren't afraid to release a more traditional sounding single to country radio.

Top 40 looks very safe. Remember that on last week's Billboard chart the #40 song had only 2 million impressions, a low number for top 40, and with 3 more songs going recurrent it'll probably take only 1.6 mill to get there this week. Competing with Adam Gregory and Josh Gracin, not so tough for a superstar.
I expect ITYS to manage at least 2.5 mill (good enough for #35) but it's hard to project new songs these days.
