This will be Carrie's next single from 'Carnival Ride', according to Whitney Allen, who played it on her show this evening following a sweeper introducing it as 'new music'.
I haven't seen an adds date yet, but either January 6th or January 13th would make perfect sense.

Well this certainly isn't what I was expecting, but I must say that I'm pleasantly surprised. Carrie does a very solid job on the song. She oversings the opening line of the chorus a tad, but then does a good job softening her voice for the second line, plus I think she does a great job on the verses. If this is indeed the next single, then I think it's a fitting way to close out the album. Yes, it does make back-to-back heartbreak ballads, but the understated nature of this song is enough of a contrast to JAD that I don't think it will cause any problems. Not to mention that this pleases me because it gets Randy Travis back on the charts (even if only as a songwriter), which is a nice consolation prize after his last single failed to chart.

Wow, I'm quite surprised. I'm guessing they wanted a ballad during winter. I do think this is different enough from JAD to not pose an issue as back-to-back ballads.
It'll be great to hear it on radio...and whether or not we'll hear a special mix combining Carrie and Randy's versions (as we sometimes do with ballad covers).

I bet this was Carrie's idea, she said the label wanted something uptempo.

I have heard this song a few times on my local country station.. they like to play unreleased songs from albums .. but i've started to hear it more frequently in the past week or so.. so i agree that it just might be the next single.

They need to release a live version as opposed to the album cut. The live version is magneficent.

I, too, am surprised at this choice. Was hoping for Crazy Dreams as the next single, but Carrie sings this song beautifully. In concert she sings it magnificently.

I love Carrie and everything, but I did not see this coming at all! It is one of my least favorite songs on the album, but it is up there as one of my favorite songs ever. Cause all of Carrie's songs are my favorite. LOL! :) I just hope this is a rumor! I really really wanted FOTF! or IKYW!

How reliable is Whitney? Hasn't she said other songs were singles and then it turns out not to be true? I'll be very surprised if this is the next single.

I'm wondering about Whitney Allen's reliability, too. I would love this choice from the standpoint of song quality and of positioning (this won't make Carrie's pop-leaning fans who are hungry for crossover-friendly material happy, but personally, I like what this would say about Carrie's love of purer country music). The emotions of the song are well conveyed by the lyrics and they are perfectly suited for Carrie's voice. Her live interpretation has matured from the studio version (which is already good). And I agree with kw9461 that it would be nice to see Randy Travis get some attention for this, and to hear a bit of Vince Gill on the radio.
All that said, Sony Nashville labels aren't exactly known for unpredictable shifts in their single choices and it seems like the label's clear preference was for an uptempo follow-up to "Just a Dream." The one thing that gives me hope is robrt30's post a while back that XM Highway 16 had done a new listener test between "Crazy Dreams" and "I Told You So," which ITYS won. But this remains one that I'll believe when I see an official adds date. I'll keep the thread in this forum for the timebeing, however.
Thanks for the word, Marv.

I was just looking forward to a true, fun uptempo like FotF. Im never a big fan of releasing two ballads in a row

I like her cover of this, but I would have preferred "The More Boys I Meet" or, if they were going with a ballad, "You Won't Find This". She does do a nice job of "I Told You So", so I'm not entirely disappointed if this does indeed turn out to be the single.

This wouldn't be my first choice. I wonder why they'd go in this direction...

"Get Out of This Town" has smash written all over it. Why this?

You Won't Find This would've been my choice... but I'm happy with pretty much anything except Twisted or TMBIM.

Her #1 streak is dunzo. This could put a crackhead to sleep. =/
I was really hoping for Flat On The Floor, Get Out Of This Town, or The More Boys I Meet. She really should've gone with something uptempo to follow Just A Dream.

This is a strange choice. I mean its a great song but I think there are much better choices...Flat on the Floor, You Won't Find This, or Get Out Of This Town would've been my picks. Do you guys think there's a chance she will ever release Twisted? That's my fav on the album and I think she sounds great on it.

Ick, this song is major boresville. Flat on the Floor or Get Out of This Town much better!

I'm looking forward to hearing this one -- could be the first song from Carrie I like. I know, I'm a bit extreme on the subject of Carrie -- but I'm writing this because, even though I haven't liked any of her songs to date, I want to give her music a chance, and I appreciate her label apparently trying to reach out to a different audience.
Even if you are disappointed, it might be a good strategy for her to broaden her appeal.
And it will be nice to have Randy Travis back on the radio. For me, anyway.

Awesome, I think this song is incredibly beautiful and I love Vince's backing vocals. It's a great song for Carrie. I am quite surprised too but very happy!!

I think the song would be so much better if she toned it down even more, and we would get to hear Vince better, too, but it is one of my favorites on the album and the purest country song she has released to date as a single if it happens. It sure would be interesting to see what country radio's reaction is to this.

Zazie, based on your previous comments, I'm going to guess that Carrie's version of this won't quite do it for you, though I'm hoping you'll at least think it shows some promise. But I really shouldn't pre-judge it for you (although I kind of just did. Sorry.).
Based on Carrie's concert performances, I think she is working her way up to a level of interpretive skill that will enable her to come up with something you do like on her fourth album, if not her third (I even have that as part of the "Looking into 2011" post I'm mentally drafting ;) ). I like Carrie's phrasing choices on her live version of this better than on her studio version; she gives the lyrics an even more lived-in feel live.
The way I see this, the label isn't expecting to sell a ton of albums off the fifth CR single, especially with no consensus even among Carrie's core fans as to what the fifth single off the album should be. And if that's the case, maybe that frees them up to choose based on artistic considerations. While I think CR has probably mostly tapped out the country market, maybe Zazie is right and this will pique the interest of a different group of country fans. And looking at this in the context of all the discussion of the state and direction of country music and country radio, this is the most interesting choice the label could make.
But having re-read Marv's initial post, did Whitney Allen explicitly introduce this as Carrie's next single, or did she merely tag it as new music from Carrie? If the latter, could it just have been her way of playing something else from Carrie during a time when she doesn't have a non-Christmas current out?

I think this is a VERY strong choice. I think that this will tap into a whole new crop of album buyers, and this could be the song that sells the album. It's very different from what she's released. I'm excited.

I love this song. I'm not expecting any particular song as the next single, so I'm fine with whatever choice they make.
