Lee Ann Womack, Patty Loveless & Trisha Yearwood are arguably the three most respected female country vocalists of the past 15-20 years; it's not their fault that their three exceptional CDs of the past 18+ months have been unconscionably ignored by country radio.
Ms. Underwood is going to #1; her only competition is Tim McGraw's new single.
Since nine of the format's 'dominant dozen' (the most played artists through the first eight months of 2008, according to Country Aircheck) currently have songs in the top twenty), the table is indeed set for this scintillating song to spend a month at #1 & wind up in the year-end top five.

I don't think today's listener would equate this song with Randy Travis anyway. There's a generational gap there between today's listeners and when that song came out. I don't think any (ok maybe a few) Carrie Underwood fans would know this was a Randy Travis song had Carrie not said anything. And I think the same goes when radio plays it; unless the DJ says something, I'm thinking the majority of listeners won't know the original version. That's probably why Alan had such big hits with the mentioned covers.

The percentage of country music listeners under twenty-five years of age has exploded in the past 3-4 years, so a huge percentage of them might not have heard the original version unless they were raised on country radio, in which case they could have conceivably heard it for the first time in the early nineties as a 'gold' library cut.
A huge percentage of those new listeners probably weren't even born in 1986!!!

The song has been added officially by 3 stations, but it has not been added to Play MPE yet according to Adam (UTR).

I don't know when you talked to Adam, but "I Told You So" has been up on Play MPE since 3 PM this afternoon. It's a single edit that cuts out most of the intro and (I think) a little bit of the outro.

Mediabase hasn't updated yet for the afternoon, but when they do, there'll probably a blue Promo MPE icon next to it. Sorry for the confusion.

IIRC, 'So Small' debuted in the very high twenties @ both BB & Country Aircheck.
Could she conceivably do it again?

Well Travis' version didn't even have an intro; it starts right with "Suppose I..." so it's not surprising that they took off the beginning. It is a bit noticeable, however, that they did it.

Does anyone have a link? Does the song flow properly without the intro?

Does anyone have a link? Does the song flow properly without the intro? Yeah the song flows alright without the intro. It's just weird to me because I've heard the album version. Listening to it again, it's not as rough as I first thought, but it's still a strange arrangement. And they did take a nice chunk out of the outro.. not the music outro, but the second time she does "now I've found somebody new..." is gone.

I don't think it'll debut that high since it's not a first single or anything. I would say low 40's.

The edit sounds great to me. Let's see how country radio feels about the "traditional" Carrie.

My radio dj remarked that they can't play the single until next week, not sure why... but they are always slow to play new songs.
He did say he was happy to see a "youngster" take a risk with a more traditional song, as most of them are remixing their songs to pop radio, etc.. and putting out mostly pop songs. So I have a feeling some djs are happy with Carrie's decision.

Tsharky--- The PD and/or MD of your hometown country station must be out of their minds in not jumping on this song immediately; there's no reason to wait whatsoever.
Also, the fact that this is the fifth single from 'Carnival Ride' has no relevance as to where it will debut on the charts, and/or how well it will perform on the charts.

Not that anybody's waiting for my review, but to my surprise I liked this a lot. Much more restraint and subtlety in the delivery, not to mention that she takes well to a well-written song in the style of the 80's. (As far as I know, this is the only song Randy ever released to radio that was a solo writing effort of his.) When I heard what she put into a simple thing like the word "first" in the second verse, I knew she was doing something very different. I am going to hope she has a big #1 with this.
Decent backup singer she found somewhere, too. Amazing who you can find just prowling around the streets of Nashville.
And I have to ask if anybody's had this experience -- I heard the song on the radio 2 days ago, except it was a version with Carrie singing the first verse and Randy T singing the second. I'd have thought I was dreaming except that I was in the car. More or less what happened back in '95 when Alison Krauss covered Keith Whitley's When You Say Nothing At All, and then a version popped up with each of them taking a verse. (In that case it was unquestionably his old version being used, and I suppose that's the case this time too.)

Zazie, the duet with Randy is on youtube. I think that version is the best version. It sounds great. I'm really glad Carrie released this.

I heard the song on Sirius Satellite Radio today! I was thrilled as they often don't play new stuff until it is farther up the charts.... It sounded amazing on the radio. :)
