This is a pretty good choice. I'm not sure if I prefer this or "Toes", but either one would be a good follow up to "Chicken Fried". I'm slightly surprised that the adds date isn't until February 16th, but with its early debut, it probably won't matter much.

Good song, but I think they could have brought it up a little. There is no climax to the song. Doesn't go anywhere. But it does sound really good.

Good song, but I think they could have brought it up a little. There is no climax to the song. Doesn't go anywhere. But it does sound really good. ' That's an interesting point, because I hear that in a lot of ZBB's songs (Toes being a notable exception). I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing, but so many of today's hits have that big climactic bridge that radio seems to be so fond of. btw, as I posted in the Chicken Fried thread, I think this is the perfect follow up single for ZBB. A nice, slow, catchy mid-tempo number that I think radio will eat up. I'm not going to go so far as to predict #1, but I think it will make the T5.

There are few obvious single choices on this record, but having said that, this track and "Toes" are their best bets for continued single success this era (I would argue "Toes" is actually the more likelier track to become a hit in that it welds with the economic discomfort dominating the nation right now, where the protagonist goes from spending all his money vacationing in a tropical paradise to returning home and sitting on the clay in his front yard drinking a generic beer brand, which could be interpreted as either optimistic or yearning)
In any case, this record is already a triumphant success and I think most never would have expected some act as earthly-sounding and genuine as the Zac Brown Band to score both a #1 Billboard Country Albums debut and a Top 20 Billboard Hot 100 single (the latter is especially impressive for any country act in general, as generally chart-topping singles on the Country format peak from the upper-30's to the mid-40's)
I know some are suggesting it's not as big a deal as is being made out to be, citing "Chicken Fried" as another generic "list" type of song lyrically about what the "country" lifestyle is all about and referencing the salute to the troops in the lyrics, as well as beer, tight jeans and other iconic images that dominate country songwriting, as pandering instances of that..........but I'm sure not even those critical of why the single succeeded can argue that their early album sales are remarkably impressive.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

This band is resonating with fans in a way that hasn't been seen in a while. They're bridging audiences young and old alike with their roots-music based organic sound and Keith Stegall produced (and promoted) album. There hasn't been a group like this come along in Country music in quite some time. This band, along with Lady A and Little Big Town (sometimes Emerson Drive too), has the ability to run with Rascal Flatts as the genres best bands. This single is the perfect follow-up to "Chicken Fried" and I LOVE that it doesn't have the typical Music Row building bridge.

I've been rooting for Joey + Rory to break through here as well, but I concede that is unlikely to happen, as they're simply too un-commercial for Country radio these days. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Well, Joey+Rory are now @ 30 with "Cheater Cheater!" And ZBB has landed @ 47. Not bad for ZBB (who have that major label support). For J&R to get to 30 is pretty amazing. I think their song "To Say Goodbye" has Top 10 written all over it.

This is okay. Better than CF, that's for sure. But I wish they would've gone with "Toes".
I'm also rooting for J+R to make it big. They are probably the most exciting newcomers in country music right now. The fact that they could take a song like "Cheater Cheater" to top 30 is quite impressive, especially with the current state of country radio.

I've been a big fan of ZBB for a while now, before CF was even on the radio. This song, i love it has a nice tune to it. I too also LOVE Toes, and Highway 20 ride is very good as well!

I hated this album at first, probably because of the truly awful lead single. This song made me go back and take another listen and I have to say my opinion is slowly changing. This is a solid song, and they most definitely are a breath of fresh air. I just wish my introduction to them hadn't been Chicken Fried.

This song is great, and I am glad radio is going to give it a chance. I would love to see it go Top 5. They are truly a talented group.

I too also LOVE Toes, and Highway 20 ride is very good as well! I love Highway 20 Ride!!!!! "Whatever It Is" is awesome too - kinda a little island style country. It's good to see this break the top 40...i'm thinking top 10 potential...any thoughts on how high this will go?

They're a brand new artist whose second single was top 40 well before the adds date (it didn't go for adds until today), so I think that's a great sign that this song will be a big hit. It's still way too early to tell, but I wouldn't be surprised if this went #1.

I'm surprised at how much better this is than Chicken Fried. Much quieter arrangement without sacrificing the life and excitement. I look forward now to hearing more from them. I was dreading it before I heard this one.

Please don't throw rocks at me -- but I very strongly disliked Chicken Fried. When I first heard "Whatever It Is" on my local radio station, I really, really liked it. Almost fell out of my chair when I realized it was from the same group. Hope it does well :)

Almost fell out of my chair when I realized it was from the same group. Hope it does well :) That is the same reaction that I had. I liked this song when it came on the radio and had no idea who it was. It floored me when they said it was the Zac Brown Band. Like Zazie, I hated Chicken Fried and was dreading hearing them on the radio again. If they have more songs like this then I look forward to hearing the album :)

I thought that "Chicken Fried" had a laid back arrangement that worked with the song very well. Sure, it was the 98,347,125,600th song to be about rural pride, but I thought that it sounded very credible because it wasn't using an amped up production or in-your-face lyrics.
