Vampire Weekend Recording Second LPSame band, new tricks. The kings of the Upper West Side are back! Well, they're working on being back, at least. Basically: Vampire Weekend are currently in a Brooklyn studio toiling away at their sophomore LP, according to an Entertainment Weekly report. The guys are tentatively hoping for a September release. Singer Ezra Koenig told EW that the foursome are more or less done with the songwriting for the LP, and are now sculpting its sound. Cue vague "what will it sound like?" quote: "It's definitely going to be a recognizably Vampire Weekend sound, but there are going to be new sounds. We're trying to challenge ourselves not to use the same bag of tricks that we used on the first album-- different instruments, stuff like that." Keyboardist Rostam Batmanglij is once again producing the album. Read the full story here. In other Vampire Weekend news, the group are playing a special one-off charity gig at Intramural Field at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina tonight as part of the ONE campaign's Campus Challenge, which helps fight poverty. Also, it looks like we might finally get an album from Batmanglij's R&B-tinged side project Discovery with Ra Ra Riot singer Wes Miles at some point this year. In the meantime, there are some (awesome) Discovery tracks streaming on their MySpace, some of which have been around for about a year. pitchfork.com/news/35180-vampire-weekend-recording-second-lp/-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Can't wait. I hope it leaks we get a single in the summertime!

One of my favorites of '08, so I'm definitely excited.

(Even if White Sky is a tad underwhelming) White Sky was amazing live the few times I saw it. I can't wait for their sophomore album!

:o OMG I CAN'T WAIT I've always felt that they are the American counterpart to UK's Arctic Monkeys: fresh-faced indie guys, with similar insane initial buzz, critical hypes, mainstream recognition, etc. And thus, I hold the belief that they will also deliver a one-two punch with their first two albums just like those UK lads.

When I first read the thread title I thought they were collaborating with the band Camera Obscura. Haha. I'll be eagerly anticipating this; their debut continues to be a delectable slice of indie pop.

Yeah...that Camera Obscura thing threw me off as well. I can't wait for this though. They are one of my favorite bands of the last few years.

"Camera Obscura"? Why name an album with a currently active band's name? But the title doesn't really matter. I can't wait to compare this to the new Arctic Monkeys album.

"Camera Obscura"? Why name an album with a currently active band's name? Yeah, kinda strange. Imagine Christina Aguilera's upcoming album, Lady GaGa. So meta, that would be. I very much recommend checking out Ezra's track with The Very Best, "Warm Heart of Africa":

^ Yeah, I love that track! I am also in love with his contribution to the Discovery album, "Carby".

I very much recommend checking out Ezra's track with The Very Best, "Warm Heart of Africa": Great song. I'm also very fond of their other song, Dinosaur on the Ark. If there's any musical trend I'm especially fond of, it's the rise of afro-pop and worldbeat (in the indie music scene at least).

I'm excited about this album. I was late to discovering VW but I really liked their debut. It's an enjoyable listen from start to finish.

If you haven't already, check out the Esau Mwamwaya and Radioclit Are the Very Best mixtape, which features a "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa" remix, as well as "Dinosaur on the Ark" and many other life-affirming tracks straight from the cradle of humanity. And it has this cover:

It looks like the poster of Lion King, LOL. What's all this talk about "Dinosaur on the Ark"? I haven't even heard about that! *Run to grab the mixtape*

I can't believe the debut album did not go Gold (in the US). Well, the reasons are apparent but it feels like it really should have gone Gold, considering its sheer appeal.

Hits Daily Double has the new album listed for September 29; I doubt it's coming that soon, as they recently said they're only 'almost done' with it, but it sure as hell would be cool.

Vampire Weekend Announce Everything About Second Album
Keen Pitchfork regulars may have noticed a mysterious ad on the site recently featuring a comely, Polo-shirt-wearing blonde staring disarmingly into the camera. The picture led to www.ithinkuracontra.com/, which displayed a bigger version of the photo...and nothing else.
Well, as you might have figured out by now, it's all part of what's sure to be an enticing viral run-up to Vampire Weekend's second album, Contra, which will bring much joy to Polo aficionados (and regular folks, too, I'm sure) when it's released on January 12, 2010, courtesy of XL. Winter just got a lot more bearable.
Whether the "Contra" in question is video game-related, bassoon-related, Nicaraguan rebel-related, or--most likely-- just some more winningly cryptic Ezra-style slang is not yet known. We do know the names of the ten songs set to show up on the LP, though. Check those out-- along with a couple October Canadian tour dates-- after the jump:
Contra:
01 Horchata 02 White Sky 03 Holiday 04 California English 05 Taxi Cab 06 Run 07 Cousins 08 Giving Up the Gun 09 Diplomat's Son 10 I Think Ur a Contra pitchfork.com/news/36492-vampire-weekend-announce-everything-about-second-album/

They should team up with Whitney and do MDB (Contra Mix): Up, Down, Left, Right, A, B, A, B START, CONTRA!
P.S. Glad they changed the name but having to wait til 2010?! Ugh.
