Whitney's second album wasn't seen as being as "black" as her debut, hence the little backlash in that community (little, as the album still sold more than 11 million in the USAand she still enjoyed success on the black charts).

I don't think you can say she was a pop artist who crossed over to R&B, because she pretty much became successful at both formats simultaneously.

Some acts classified as R&B also could be classified as pop, rock, etc. There are number in the Hall of Fame. Among females inducted as performers, there's Dusty Springfield, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Martha & the Vandellas, Etta James, Ruth Brown and Aretha Franklin. As with many things in the world, there are more male inductees than females. James Brown, being the Godfather of Soul, is the template for male soul, just as Aretha is.

This is absolutely true.

As for the whole Soul Train thing, that was just a dumb and ignorant moment that I never really got. In latter years, Whitney started sounding more "black" and they still embraced her just as they embraced her when she released songs like "You Give Good Love," which was a huge R&B hit. But whatever.

Donna Summer absolutely needs to be inducted; Sade, no clear induction there and no need for anytime soon, IMO. The group is good and has a lock on the "Quiet Storm" crowd (as evidenced by its showing at Urban AC), but it did not have the influence/impact that Donna has had.

Well first off, Sade released the Diamond Life album in 1984 so she definitely qualifies for the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, whether you believe it or not. And considering their massive success this year, they should be contenders for 2011 or 2012.

Please don't throw off that shade making my points seem bombastic in comparison. You know pretty well Metallica's induction last year was partly helped by their success for Death Magnetic in 2008. You don't have to be that smug all the time, HG.

I was not trying to make your comments seem "bombastic," just expressing a viewpoint.

It has nothing to do with being *eligible*- it's whether Sade will be considered or not- and I don't believe Sade will be anytime soon- that's all. Metallica was considered a no-brainer, and people were surprised that the band didn't make it in on the first year of eligibility(it made it in the second year).

The Future Rock Legends site is pretty good with its percentage chances for acts to be inducted (only really off, IMO, on a couple that I've seen). I added a vote (just to see the percentage), and it's at 18%. Again, you'll have percentages that are way too high (see Britney Spears, as the biggest example- she'd be lucky to have a 25% shot at this point), but for the most part, it's not far off.

The Beastie Boys actually were eligible in 2007; the breakthrough didn't come until 1986, but that doesn't change the fact that its first recording came in 1982.

I don't think Stevie will be considered anytime soon for her solo work. She's had some good stuff, but on the whole, not as strong as her work with Fleetwood Mac.

Pat Benatar is one of my favorites, but she was never a big critical hit. She may have some trouble. Heart, I think may suffer some because of the 1985-on "glossy" work (like Chicago in the 80s-on).
