That was okay. The rehearsal was WAY better. She was straining kinda hard at parts... Wish she woulda just done it with the orchestra. :( Well, she was probably shitting her pants! lol

At least she was better than Latifah. What the hell was that? Who invited her lol? Queen Latifah was um, horrid. Thankfully Carrie sang soon thereafter and even with some strain sounded great. I also wish there was a bigger production, which usually adds an "EPIC" feel to the anthem.

Wow she's probably the first person ever to do it live. Even Whitney Houston, Jordin Sparks and J-Hud lipsynced to their recorded versions. Props to her!
Will this be available as a single on iTunes? I know everyone else that's done it recently has had it available for purchase on iTunes

I only heard the last 10 seconds... sounded terrible!
I'm sure as a whole she did fine though..

Sometimes I wonder how people can be so cruel. This is the f**king National Anthem people, not a competition. ( and, I'm not just talking about the people on here.)
I didn't even really notice the last note because everyone was cheering where I'm at and on the field....

Apart from the end note, it sounded good. She deserves major credit for doing what others didn't. Sing live.

Apart from the end note, it sounded good. She deserves major credit for doing what others were too afraid to and that's sing live. Exactly. Whitney, J-Hud, Jordin, and Beyonce all lipped it. So, the small imperfections don't really bother me, it was real and it was live.

LOL at the reviews praising her like crazy. I was waiting for them to eviscerate her. For being live, she was the best. No one sings it live.

It's not that they're afraid to do it live, it's the Superbowl's policy that they sing it to a taped track. Carrie must have gone through hell to get them to let her sing it live because nobody has ever done it live.

music-mix.ew.com/2010/02/07/carrie-underwood-super-bowl-national-anthem/American Idol Feb 7 2010 06:44 PM ET * * * * * * * Share * Permalink * Comments (16) Carrie Underwood's Super Bowl 'National Anthem': Another touchdown for the country powerhouse! by Michael Slezak Categories: American Idol, Carrie Underwood, Country, Y'all! You want your National Anthem sung right? You call an American Idol alum. At least that seems to be the consistent (and, to be honest, correct) message brought to you by the good folks of the NFL. Last year’s Super Bowl found Jennifer Hudson singing “The Star-Spangled Banner,” while this year’s NFC and AFC conference championship games brought Kris Allen and Jordin Sparks to the mic to get in touch with their inner patriots (national, not New England). And for tonight’s all-eyes-are-locked-on-it game, we got Idol’s season 4 champ and ubiquitous country queen Carrie Underwood offering her own (not-surprisingly) exquisite twist on the National Anthem. Clad in a dazzling white pantsuit, a top that looked like it was made from the scales of a silver reptile, and a pair of “whoa, mama!” platform heels (in other words, your basic Storm Trooper chic), Carrie stepped up to the mic without a hint of nervousness and delivered the goods under pressure. This wasn’t a make-it-your-own “Star-Spangled Banner,” but rather, a traditional rendition that was clear, powerful, and heartfelt. But honestly, when it comes to the National Anthem, do we really want singers taking liberties with the melody? For the love of Francis Scott Key, I would like to offer my own resounding answer to that question: “Heck, no!” And so, The Lady Underwood keeps intact a record of vocal spotlessness* that would be the envy of even an Indianapolis fan. In other words…well played, Ms. Underwood, well played. As for Queen Latifah’s “America the Beautiful,” I’ll offer slightly less enthusiastic props, with the caveat that the Queen was clearly struggling with a wonky earpiece from the get-go. And so while the opening few lines seemed plagued by nerves/frustration, the Oscar-nominated singer/rapper/actress recovered nicely, getting her riff on with an “I love America” ad-lib that meshed nicely with a full children’s chorus. (The pre-show’s funniest moment? That little boy in the front row who gave a legendary side-eye to the camera while waiting for his part to kick in. Oh-em-gee indeed!) What did you think of Carrie’s “Star-Spangled Banner”? The Queen’s “America the Beautiful”? Sound off in the comments below, and don’t miss EW’s live-blog of Super Bowl XLIV (everything but the game!) happening over at our PopWatch blog! *No, I am not counting that final note — which found a cacophonous match in the crowd’s enthusiastic roar — against our gal.

I like Carrie and I definitely give her props for having the guts to sing it live and a cappella, but that was awful. So much shouting, and those last few big notes were cringe-worthy.

That was okay. The rehearsal was WAY better. She was straining kinda hard at parts... Wish she woulda just done it with the orchestra. :( Doing it without music is by far more impressive. With music, she would have sounded great - but something about hearing the Anthem a cappella is just so moving. To sing over a crowd like that, straining is more than necessary.

Those "shouting" aspects were belting, IMO. Most of those notes sounded as if they originated from her diaphragm (belting) and not from her throat (shouting). Carrie has a very powerful voice and perhaps she slightly overcompensated for singing in a very large stadium by dialing up on her singing volume, but it was neverless belting, NOT shouting, in my humble opinion.

You must be listening to something completely different from what I heard. Their was no shouting, and those last few notes were nothing more than shakey...I agree there may have been straining, but singing over a crowd like that requires a bit of strain. I think it's one of the best renditions I've ever heard.

Well, to be fair, if she had lipped it to her own recording, she would have completely avoided what just happened, and the focus would be on her amazing rendition and not one bad note. However, I DO give her major props for doing it live.

However, I DO give her major props for doing it live. Well it's only the people here at Pulse zeroing in on the note. Critics seem to find her version amazing.
