Whew! *sigh of relief* By the way some of y'all were talking, I thought it might have been horrible and career-killing, but I just watched the YouTube link and it was far from that. Whew! plus, live and a cappella?! Nerves of steel!

Stephen, have you looked at Twitter? That note was very much noticed and people are calling her pitchy all over the place. It's not just here. Do a search for "Carrie Underwood" and you'll see what I mean.

People with any music knowledge know that the American National Anthem is one of the hardest songs to sing, and Carrie practically perfected it except for one note. The people that have no clue what they are talking about, or just have bad ears will judge a performance based on one note. Carrie singing it live, imperfectly, is better than having lip synced...she gains respect from the people that actually matter, and the people that normally dislike Carrie will hate no matter what, you can't do anything about it. It was one rough note, and she probably couldn't hear herself over the crowd. Don't forget, we hear what goes through the microphone, she hears the distorted noise throughout the stadium. She was most likely singing the last line by vocal-memory opposed to by ear. She couldn't hear so she fell back on what felt right - I do that sometimes. The reviews from reputable people will be possitive, if not, average. Reviews from normally less reputable/liked critics will be less favorable. The people who realize the difficulty of that song, and the balls Carrie had to have to do it live in front of the biggest anual TV audience will weigh in her favor.

Hmm, her timing/phrasing was kinda weird during the middle. And the last note went kinda off-pitch.
But as a whole it was amazing. Who else would have had the guts to sing it live? Major props to her for that. Any other diva woulda succumbed to nerves. And she did sound a bit nervous, but overall it was a solid performance. I don't think she deserves negative criticism for the performance at all!

Well either way, girls got balls. Good for her. She was bound to have a rough vocal someday. At least we know she never lip-synchs, lmao.

I wonder how she was able to do it live, they have always said they don't allow it because they want and need it to be perfect. I think it's awesome she stood her ground and got them to take her doing it live, a capella no less.
It wasn't a great rendition, though. I have always found Carrie's high notes to be strained and odd-sounding. When she would do the "proudly" and "rampart" notes, they are lovely, within her comfort belting range--much like how she sounds in Temporary Home. But, for me, the worst part wasn't the end, but the "rockets' red glare." She was just shouting, and you can tell because she was not pronouncing those words properly. They are tough vowels to sing that high. She hit the vowels on "free" well, but that too sounded strained. Beyond that, I found her enunciation odd throughout the song...like overdone in the beginning (e.g., "hailed" sounded like "heeled").
But, that is really being unnecessarily picky, and the general public probably won't be that picky. She should be commended for singing it live, but there is a reason they ask people to lip. There is just a lot of pressure on that one moment, and the producers don't want to avoid negative press. They shouldn't get any for this, though.

I wouldn't even call it rough. It wasn't jaw-dropping like the rehearsal, but it was a good vocal.
And so far most critics have responded positively. I think all the Twitter hate got started because Fabolous tweeted that J-Hud would've done a better job.

You can tell she was singing from the diaphragm throught the whole song. Singing with your throat is when you shout. She was definately straining though, and that has to do with singing over the crowd - in the rehearsal, there was no straining at all.

Yeah, some parts of the performance sounded great while others sounded bad (that last note was completely off). I think this is the first performance I can honestly remember seeing from her where the vocals weren't completely on-point (that alone is impressive). I could see how she would perhaps be nervous with a performance like that! Either way, no biggie.

She shouldn't be hard on herself. What she did took major guts and EVERYONE knows she's a good singer.

Do a search for "Carrie Underwood" and you'll see what I mean. She sang live. To sing live at that venue when no one has in years, I don't care if it wasn't perfect. I've taken to ignoring the SB anthems because I have no interest in watching someone lip sync to a track. She didn't do that. I have to give up respect to her for having done that. It wasn't great but it wasn't bad. It was good enough.

I do love how some people are like, "DSLKJD ONE BAD NOTE AT THE END." I think I've just been spoiled by how ridiculously amazing she sounds pretty much all the time.

Apart from the end note, it sounded good. She deserves major credit for doing what others were too afraid to and that's sing live. Many people do do it live. Mariah, Beyonce, Billy Joel, the Dixie Chicks, just to name a few. Everyone pre-records it, though, just in case. And, I doubt Jennifer Hudson was afraid. This was her first performance after the murder of her family, so she was naturally nervous.

(just because Whitney did, everyone thought every anthem at the SB is). If you look up YT videos of past anthems you can tell they were live. So far, only Houston, Sparks and Hudson have been confirmed to lip sing.

Nobody but Carrie has sung the SSB live at the Superbowl since 1993. No one. Not even Whitney did it live
