Fuck. They taught us about WAY too many group charity singles when I was in middle school... I know Will Smith rapped in one of them ...

Jay-Z: 'We Are The World' shouldn't have been updated
"I know everybody is gonna take this wrong," Jay-Z told MTV on Saturday at the annual 2 Kings dinner during NBA All-Star weekend in Dallas, "We Are the World, I love it, and I understand the point and think it's great. But I think We Are the World is like [Michael Jackson's] Thriller to me. I don't ever wanna see it touched."
He continued, "I'm a fan of music. I know the plight and everything that's going on in Haiti. ... So I appreciate the efforts and everything, but We Are the World is [musically] untouchable like Thriller is untouchable. It was a valiant effort, but for me, it's gonna be untouchable."
Jay said he felt that a new song should have been written instead of re-creating the 1985 classic. "I would have loved that idea better," he said.
I agree Hova....

Will Smith rapped in the charity single "Voices that Care" in 1991. Just off the top of my head I'm remembering "Right or Wrong, we're all praying you remain strong, that's why we're all here singing along..." or something like that. Loved Voices that Care. I'm pulling out the CD single right now. If i'm not mistaken, this song was the first high-profile gig for Celine.

It wasn't bad as people are saying. But as much as I like Justin, I must say I was thrown off by him OPENING the song! And then Wyclef's yodeling... WTF. Also, despite the presence of Babs and Celine, the lack of star power was painfully apparent. Natalie Cole, Gladys Knight, Tom Jones, and the Wilsons certainly added some clout to the track. I wonder why they weren't on the original! As far as future legends... Pink and Kanye West were the only 2 I would classify as such. In the original, the only big stars that were glaringly omitted were Madonna, Prince, Bon Jovi, and Streisand herself. Other than that, we had the complete American A-list, right? The song itself- the usual suspects shined. Celine and Pink were the best, of course. But what's new?

It is easy to say that the original recording was packed with legends and this one isn't because 25 years have passed. 25 years from now we might say that this recording contained more than 2 legends

^^ I'm not so sure about that. I was like super young when the original came out but I knew who 90% of the artists were-soloists and chorus. Like, really knew them--Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper, Michael Jackson, Huey Lewis, that dude from Journey, Bob Dylan, etc. etc.. I was not a pop culture fanatic nor were my parents all that into music when my age was in single digits. These artists were huge stars. And the fact that most all of the soloists are still regarded 25 years later says something about the way they chose who would be featured.
The biggest problem, IMO, with the new version is that in 1985 music was a lot more unified. There were jazz artists and pop artists and rock artists and country artists, but they all put out melodic music. Most all of them knew how to sing a ballad. Most all of them knew how to sing.
Nowadays, there's a lot more niche genres, and music is a lot more stylized (with the use of autotune, the popularity of rap and hip hop, and the heavy dance production on uptempo pop songs). So Quincy/Lionel took a song that worked well in 1985 with singers that could actually sing that type of song, and they gave it to a bunch of 2010 artists, some of which have never sung a song like that in their careers. The result is a song made of oddly disconnected solos--some good, some terrible and some just strange. The solos don't work well together. Not to mention that the 2010 version had a lot more artists doing solos that simply do not have the vocals to not sound miserable next to the real singers.
IMO, the Spanish remake, Somos El Mundo, is probably going to come out better because most of the artists involved have similar styles or genres.

Glad it's selling well! Jennifer(both Hudson & Nettles) and Celine are my faves on it :) And can't forget about Nicole!

IMO, the Spanish remake, Somos El Mundo, is probably going to come out better because most of the artists involved have similar styles or genres. Well, they're using mainly pop based artists. I just googled who was going to be a part of this, and I found the getty images pics, and apparently it was recorded today, and those in attendance were (not sure if they're all performing, but I'm assuming they are): Aleks Syntek, Ana Barbara, Andy Garcia, Angélica María, Angélica Vale, Arthur Hanlon , Chayanne, Christian Chavez, David Archuleta, Eddy Herrera, Ednita Nazario, Eiza Gonzalez, Emilio Estefan, Fonseca, Jon Secada, Jose Feliciano, Jose Luis Rodriguez, Kat DeLuna, Melina Leon, Luis Enrique, Melina Leon, Patricia Manterola and Tito El Bambino, Luz Rios, Natalia Jimenez, Sergio Mayer, AB Quintanilla, Pee Wee, Willy Chirino Most of these are pop based artists, or artists whose track can be changed a little to become pop-like without making any other vocal arrangements and the song will work fine. Looking at this list there aren't that many BIG stars in this version, or someone who can really bring in the money and is more International. I mean where's Shakira, Alejandro Fernandez, Vicente Fernandez, Paulina Rubio, Thalia, Enrique Iglesias, Alejandra Guzman, Wisin y Yandel, Juanes, etc.

Actually the list you have is very incomplete. And all I said was that the Spanish version would sound better--which I think you basically agreed with--because the styles of the artists are more homogeneous. I don't think the Spanish version is going to sell more, at least not in the US, simply because it's directed at certain niche segment of the population rather than the whole population. But it might sell better in other countries because a lot of those involved are huge stars in Central and South America (and it might sound pretty decent too).

Yeah, I agreed with you on that :) And yea, it seems the list was incomplete since I also read articles saying some of the ones I wondered about were going to be there. Latin music doesn't sell much in the U.S. like you mentioned, and the digital market in Mexico, and pretty much all the other latin countries isn't that high, and piracy is huge, but I'm sure they'll be able to garner a decent amount considering this.

Yeah, the youtube stars version is better. lol. I think it was the minimal production & the fact that, in order to be a youtube star, you have to be able to sing without a lot of studio magic involved.

I think the youtube version is better for a number of reasons...
1. It wasn't overproduced, and it didn't have studio vocal effects 2. It was raw and real 3. It was by ordinary people and not celebrities. You can always pull celebs together for a song, but these people are nobodies and they sound great. They came together on their own accord. I appreciate it a lot more to be honest.

"Somos El Mundo" (spanish version of WATW) -- Video will premiere tonight on Cristina on Univision at 10pm EST. I think the Spanish version came out better. They highlighted the guitar better, and the rap, I think, was done better (although I could have done without a rap altogether). Props to them for putting the guitar behind the rap. Plus, I think the different voices blended pretty well. Here's a youtube of the audio (as long as it stays up): ETA: Video and song available on iTunes

Hmm, I thought I would be better in recognizing the voices, but I just made out the voices of Jose Feliciano, Vicente Fernandez, Belinda, Shakira, Angelica Vale, Natalia (5a Estacion), Luis Fonsi, Pitbull & Daddy Yankee. I'll check out the video later, but indeed this version was much better than the English one, the rap didn't seem out of the no where, and there was no Wyclef howling...

I think it was just Taboo that was in SEM - I think he's the only Latino in BEP. He does part of the rap.
