Lil Wayne should stick to his genre of music if him doing a Rock record is the SOLE reason for these so so numbers. Could it be that no one is really interested in the music period? That could be too. 140-150k is underwhelming for Lil Wayne. Sorry.

Lil Wayne's numbers are great for an album that was pushed back serially for a year and has zero hits.

This. Tha Carter III was pushed back for over a year and most of the songs from that album leaked a year before its release. I think these sales are a reflection of the critical reception it has received from fans and critics. I have not read one good review about this album. The music is just bad. Young Money's album should be doing better as well, especially since they have a hit single now.

Oh I didn't know how badly it was doing critically...from like B+ to D+. MC has it as the #7 worst album released 2000+.

Well, Rap/Hip-Hop fans don't generally like Rock. Urban music is presumably much more broad in the US than Rock, it's like having Reba doing a Hip-Hop album, not many people will really follow her to her new music. 140K-150 is 50K less than I expected. Expecting sales like his other albums, or something around 500K is just not realistic.

808s & Heartbreak opened up with solid numbers, and it wasn't a Hip Hop/Rap album by any means.

^BUT it had 2 real hits (love lockdown and heartless, which was HUGE), it came out on the week of black friday, there was a lot of hype surrounding it because kanye's mom had died and people wanted to hear what he had to say, AND kanye is just a true artist. i mean, when you produce your own stuff (kanye, eminem, dr. dre, B.o.B, UGK) it usually turns out better thematically. "rebirth" is what little wayne thinks rock sounds like, even tho he turns out to be horribly mistaken. also, 808's had such a unique sound as well.

I remember quite well that Black Friday was weak as hell though. Also, I agree with some of the stuff you said about Kanye and 808s & Heartbreak. I think Lil Wayne is opening up with these numbers because the music is terrible and everyone knows it. Artists have opened up with strong numbers without strong first singles. And if I'm not mistaken, Lil Wayne just performed "Drop This World" at the Grammys, which furthers my case. Regardless if it's Rock album, the music isn't selling because it's crap, mix with some other factors. But I get what everyone else is saying though. Weezy, stick to Hip Hop.

Why is this? Casual fans of his would have no reason to buy this record because they don't listen to that genre of music. Imagine someone like Britney Spears doing an urban album or Lady Gaga doing a gospel album. It just would not sell as they couldn't possibly market it succesfully. And also if people are expecting him to sell anywhere near 1 million copies of his next *rap* album (1st week) then they're setting themselves up for disappointment. Just ask Usher. And woot for Bey and GaGa! Exactly. Perfect examples btw. LOL, not even close.

at you pretending those are hits. Only if your definition entails barely scraping the Top 20 of the Hot 100 thanks to first week digital sales while receiving zero airplay. NONE of his songs from this project have gotten significant spins from any radio format, and that's what sells albums.

POST-GRAMMY GLITTER: Grammy week’s big winner appears to be LaFace/JLG’s Pink, whose high-flying, upside-down Cirque de Soleil water-spritzing routine, as well as an Oprah appearance, helped re-ignite her Funhouse album, which is up to 30-32k at the moment, more than three times last week’s total of 9k. Gains include triple digits at the major physical retailers, as well as at iTunes. The track itself, “Glitter in the Air,” is up over 1,000% in digital downloads, bringing a smile to the collective punims of labelites Barry Weiss, Tom Carrabba and Joe Riccitelli. (2/8p)|

So you guys are saying that airplay hits have absolutely nothing to do with selling an album in any case?

So you guys are saying that airplay hits have absolutely nothing to do with selling an album in any case? No, I don't think having hit singles guarantees a hit album, and several artists are a testament of that. Of course it does for some, but not necessarily the majority or all.

So you guys are saying that airplay hits have absolutely nothing to do with selling an album in any case? I don't think "radio spins are what sell albums", which is what I quoted and was responding to. They can and sometimes help, but as we've seen numerous times in the last year alone, a hit single on the radio is not the only ingredient necessary for great album sales. Everyone should know that by now.
