Having multiple airplay hits can propel an album's sales significantly. Sure, you don't *need* them to have a mega succesful album, but I'd say many of the 5xp albums have had multiple radio hits to sustain their sales. Examples, GGGB, FutureSex/Love Sounds, I Am...Sasha Fierce, Confessions, The Fame. There are several exceptions which I would cite more as anomalies moreso then the norm (ie. Susan Boyle selling 3 mill without having a radio hit).

Honey, I'm not saying that airplay hits don't help at all. I'm saying that it doesn't help in everyone's case or is the only thing needed to have a successful album. A hit radio single isn't the only thing that sells an album. Actually putting out music that is quality, major promotion/visibility, support from the label, etc may all play factors. All those artists' albums you listed had most, if not, all of those factors, not just radio hits.

How much do you have to sell to be certified Gold? I would say around 350-375k SoundScaned. Albums have been certified for less. Yeah...I'm pretty sure Jessica Simpson's A Public Affair was certified gold even though it sold less than 300k.

Toni Braxton's Libra sold 300k+ but was certified Gold. I think as long as an artist ships 500k, they are okay.

Rihanna`s Rated R is barely over 500k and already certified Platinum.

It doesn't matter how much it sold, get certified is about how much was shipped...

^ Exactly, look at Madonna's Celebration, hardly scanned 150k when it was certified gold, although its a two CD

I was going to ask about everyone's Sade projections, but Billboard has already forecasted 375-400k. WOW

^ Exactly, look at Madonna's Celebration, hardly scanned 150k when it was certified gold, although its a two CD Well RIAA reads its sales as nearly 400k because it's a 2-Disc album (or runs over 90 minutes, I think is the guideline) so I wouldn't say it's being particularly over-certified at all.
