I don't think Telephone will go #1... like GaGa's past three singles, the airplay/sales don't match up. Her airplay is slowly rising however the sales seem to be peaking now because of the video release. By the time the airplay peaks, the sales will have tapered off.

That's not really the problem though. The real problem is neither of the components (airplay/sales) are strong enough to propel it to the top. You don't necessarily need them to peak at the same time, you just need one to be really strong to get to the top.

True.
I think Gaga got to #3 this week because it's the week that the video really had its impact, and at the same time Break Your Heart/Need You Now had negative bullets on the H100.
Looks like You Belong may drop off soon. It's at #45 in its 48th week. Pretty good run.

What was the last #1 song that captured the top digital sales AND the top of the airplay chart at the same time? I'm asking, I don't remember myself.

Telephone won't go to #1 because 1. Digital sales aren't strong enough 2. Artists like Rihanna who are played on more than one large format (like Pop, R&B, and Rhythmic) have more spins than GaGa combined on formats. GaGa is really only played on Pop

'Telephone' is not going #1... #3 will more than most likely be its peak.

Record sales only matter from a business standpoint, otherwise, they are just a way for obsessed fans to argue over their favorite artists. The general public won't be like, "Remember when Beyonce sold 4.2 millions copies of Dangerously in Love?" They're going to remember her #1 singles like "Crazy in Love," "Baby Boy," "Irreplaceable," and "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)." Same goes for Rihanna. So as long as their record companies are still investing money into them, I don't really think record sales are important (to us anyway). I don't agree with this at all. The average person remembers singles more than albums, but whenever I've discussed this with people (comparing different artists/genres and their success) the conversations always go back to album sales and who has sold more. Especially rock fans. Led Zeppelin have an unimpressive Hot 100 history compared to *many* other acts, but that doesn't change the fact that they've outsold everyone except The Beatles, Garth Brooks, and Elvis in the US.

I agree with Live Your Life. I don't think the average person is going to be talking about such and such album selling x amount of copies. He or she would be much more likely to remember a huge single (not to say I personally don't think album sales are important). I've never had a single discussion with any of my family or friends about album sales/chart statistics. They couldn't care less.

GaGa is really only played on Pop GaGa is getting plays from Rhytmic too. Her biggest issue is that neither the airplay nor the downloads are HUGE. She's doing well, but on a lower level. #3 will be it's peak, and I'm quite happy with that, since everyone was expecting it to reach #5 or #6. It did it's job.

Great to see B.o.B. finally breath through. How great it would be if he could get a #1.

Outside of this board, I don't know anyone who really cares about how well a song does. We are chart heads, but who really sits around and look at CHR stats and such? I think album sales are much more important. It gives fans bragging rights moreso than single sales and Hot 100 positions. From a business standpoint, album sales will always be more important than single success. I don't recall the industry making a big deal out of physical singles declining in sales and becoming obsolete. It's quite the contrary with physical albums.

Artists like Ke$ha and Rihanna, whom she's been competing with especially lately, have all done better than her on that format

The same argument can be made for album sales. The average person is more likely to notice when a single is successful, because they'll hear it on the radio a lot. How exactly does the average person know an album is massively successful (without specifically checking for certifications/chart positions)? Hell, most of the people I know don't even know what albums their current favorite songs come from. Of course album sales (and even single sales) are important to chart obsessed individuals like all of us here (and to labels of course), but to the average person, naw. I'd bet most equate what is most successful with what they hear being played all the time. Either way, I think successful singles are important. After all, typically, you won't have a massively successful album with a hit single of some sort.

I think both have their advantages. That's not necessarily true. Ke$ha's 'Tik Tok' spent more weeks at #1 on Pop radio than Bad Romance did and we all know how supportive Pop radio was during Rihanna's GGGB era

Single sales are very important...but which would you rather have? Personally me, id take the successful album. There are too many artist out not that have a #1 singles that cant sell albums. Besides BEP,Bee, and Gaga- no one is really doing both...which is why they are some of the biggest acts out now. So selling single is great andd so is having #1s but unless you can do both its hard to be recognized as a HUGE act

But 20 years from now which do you think people will remember, a successful album or a hit song? eg: Whitney Houston's last album sold pretty well, but some years from now, what will that album be remembered for? Unless you can get a big hit out of it, I don't think many people will remember it in the long run...

and we all know how supportive Pop radio was during Rihanna's GGGB era Not nearly as supportive as they've been with GaGa (every single going to #1 with an insane amount of spins). Like I said, they all have their advantages. It's not like GaGa doesn't get any love from Rhythmic radio (I'd say top 10 placement shows pretty good support).

20 years from now i doubt if you didnt have a hit album people are going to remember your single.... I think he's saying successful singles are more likely to stay in the public mind more so than successful albums. I certainly think the average person would be more likely to remember the name of a successful single over the album from which it was released. Also, as we all are well aware, you don't have to have a hugely successful album to have a hugely successful single. I think the albums that are easily recognized abroad (over their respective singles) are few and far between. How many average individuals (aka people who don't feverishly research chart positions and music statistics) do you think would automatically associate Irreplaceable with B'Day, or Hero with Music Box, or Since U Been Gone with Breakaway, or Un-Break My Heart with Secrets etc? I'd say most would recognize the singles but wouldn't be able to give you the title of their respective album to save their life.
