Quick Hot 100 fact:If California Gurls debuts at #1, it will only be the 2nd time ever a #1 debut has replaced another #1 debut. The last (and only) time a #1 debut replaced a #1 debut was on the December 2, 1995 chart when One Sweet Day by Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men replaced Exhale (Shoop Shoop) by Whitney Houston. So wait, One Sweet Day didn't replace Fantasy? I thought Fantasy debuted at #1 as well??

Exhale (Shoop Shoop) replaced Fantasy and One Sweet Day replaced Exhale. Still an amazing feat and is a microchosim of Whitney and Mariah's Hot 100 dominance in the 90's.

Well, I guess I didn't notice that one because I meant strictly back to back debuts. Exhale debuted at #1 and the following week One Sweet Day debuted at #1. Fantasy had spent 8 weeks in the #1 spot before being replaced.

Despite being "repressed," "Fantasy" and "One Sweet Day" had extremely great runs at #1. "Exhale" was "repressed" as well. It spent a week at #1, but it was no fluke hit. It spent 11 record-breaking weeks at #2. Mariah and Whitney were definitely the queens of their times and I see why they were so heavily compared despite being different vocalists.

Is everyone so sure that Katy will hit #1 on the Hot 100? She'd have to outsell Usher by 75k (my best guess for the highest point total for another single) -- I'm not sure her lead has been huge enough to guarantee that.
I'd give her a 50/50 chance...

I have a feelig she isn't going to debut at #1. Usher hasn't been to far off from her at Itunes, and his Airplay has been going up with huge gains daily. I think he'll still be #1

Hmmmmmmmmm, could Katy possibly miss #1 on the Hot 100 altogether because of Usher's airplay?

How has Katy been doing at other download sites? Remember Usher fell off a couple of days --- he was in the #3 and 4 spot for about two days on iTunes.

Katy at one point almost had double the pop bars of Usher and managed to maintain a decent lead all week until the tail end of Sunday. 75k isn't that hard to do. I guess we'll see though. Also, doesn't Billboard use BDS and not Mediabase? Those numbers may be VERY different.

If Katy does hit #1 this week, then Usher may not get another chance at #1 next week if Miley comes out with strong numbers. Then "Airplanes" is doing extremely well on radio and holding on strong digitally. We will see saw claws thrown for the next month or so. I like it that way. Reminds me of 2007.

It's obvious that Alejandro has no shot at number 1 on the Hot 100...but does anyone think it has a shot at number 1 on the Pop Songs chart?

^^ Have not really been following it, but it's Gaga's umpteenth single in a row....there's going to be diminishing returns at some point....

Billboard.biz:
• Things are much rosier over on the Digital Songs chart this week, where Katy Perry's "California Gurls" (featuring Snoop Dogg) debuts at No. 1 with 294,000 downloads sold. It's Perry's best debut sales week for a single and will certainly garner her a top five debut on the Billboard Hot 100 singles sales chart when it's released Thursday morning (May 20). If it debuts as forecasted, it will be Perry's fourth top 10 hit and highest debut on the sales/airplay-hybrid Billboard Hot 100.
• Last week's Digital Songs No. 1, Eminem's "Not Afraid," falls to No. 4 with 202,000 (down 47%), while Usher's "OMG" is steady at No. 2 with 240,000 (though it's up 13%). The second-highest entry on the Digital Songs chart belongs to the "Glee" TV cast's rendition of Rick Springfield's classic Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single "Jessie's Girl." The new "Glee" version enters at No. 10 on Digital Songs with 105,000 sold.

Well that solves that... I doubted a non-Urban/pop song would have made it to number one. It was way too much to ask. Other than Kesha, we're already halfway into 2010 and 6 out of the 7 "#1"'s are all rap/urban/urban-pop. Jesus Christ could we get some variety in this country???
"Tik Tok" - Kesha "Imma Be" - Black Eyed Peas "Break Your Heart" - Taio Cruz featuring Ludacris "Rude Boy" - Rihanna "Nothin' on You" - B.o.B featuring Bruno Mars "OMG" - Usher featuring will.i.am "Not Afraid" - Eminem

I knew it. You can always tell by the bars. The gap between Eminem and Usher was too huge. In comparison, while Katy's bars where greater than Usher's, the gap wasn't as huge as when Em and Usher were going at it. And then ofcourse there's the airplay, Usher is too high up now for her to be close.

I think it will get #1 soon or will be at the top tier of the charts for the whole summer at least. I hope "Airplanes" goes #1 some time soon.
