Yeah I don't understand why in this country, EVERY "pop" song nowadays needs to tack on a rapper - most of the time it adds absolutely nothing to the song, yet it almost guarantees that it'll get more airplay on pop stations for some reason, even though the song was POP to begin with. It's not like Katy was hoping to get this song played on urban stations. Jay Sean did it with "Down" (Lil Wayne adds NOTHING to the song), I even remember when Amy Winehouse released "Rehab" here, they added some rapper to it LOL, talk about a joke. Who remembers "Do You Remember" by Jay Sean? The song alone wasn't bad (almost a "Forever" Chris Brown knock off), but they had to add in Lil Jon's vocals and as usual, it's always F'n hilarious - he was basically just barking out "LET'S BRING IT BACK!" and "DO YOU REMEM-BAH!" randomly, I swear to god I wish Dave Chapelle was still around...)
I could tell she wasn't going to get number one. Eminem's pop bars almost doubled OMG's, but Katy has maybe had about a third of a lead on him. I'm not the biggest fan of California Gurls, but I'm a big fan of variety. It may as well just be another six months of BEP domination for all I care - because all of the number ones this year have been in the same format.
Why is it that 300K+ knuckleheads can run out and buy Eminem's single but 300K+ can't run out and buy Katy's? Why is it always the rap/urban s**t that wins out in the end, and I'm not even talkin airplay here. Yes, I understand that this is the "sound" that today's youth wants to hear, it almost amazes me how stuff like "Fireflies" by Owl City and "Hey There Delilah" even got to #1 in this sad musical climate.

LOL
I get kingofpain, but I don't think half of these #1s will be remembered like that anyway. The Hot 100 is so iffy these days.

Well that solves that... I doubted a non-Urban/pop song would have made it to number one. It was way too much to ask. Other than Kesha, we're already halfway into 2010 and 6 out of the 7 "#1"'s are all rap/urban/urban-pop. Jesus Christ could we get some variety in this country??? "Tik Tok" - Kesha "Imma Be" - Black Eyed Peas "Break Your Heart" - Taio Cruz featuring Ludacris "Rude Boy" - Rihanna "Nothin' on You" - B.o.B featuring Bruno Mars "OMG" - Usher featuring will.i.am "Not Afraid" - Eminem Most of those songs are quite pop-oriented. The only lead artist on that list who is a straight-up rapper is Eminem, really. I know you reference "urban" broadly there but that covers quite a few genres. I don't know that we're really seeing the level of homogeneity that you're saying. Most popular songs today have some elements of a variety of genres, whether it's hip-hop, dance, pop, rap, R&B, etc. I don't think Katy Perry really sounds all that different from many of the above tracks. I'm also glad to see that digital sales have apparently picked up the pace a bit -- 4 songs over 200k is great to see! I'm also betting against Miley hitting #1 next week.

^Especially with such lower airplay (it probably won't reach PITUSA's airplay levels).

Well especially Katy Perry's song.. if you told me Ke$ha was singing it, I'd believe it. It's a fairly generic pop song where like Ke$ha, the vocals are all sound electronically altered... That is why I was hoping that Lady Antebellum could have topped the chart for 1 week, it would have been an amazing feat. I highly doubt Miley will top the chart either, if she couldn't do it with PITU, she's not going to do it with this.
And again, I reiterate that I have nothing against Usher or the 300K people who ran out and bought Eminem's single (which obviously doesn't look like it's going to explode at radio either) - but why can't we see some other act or at least true pop artist achieve these same feats?

So a 54,000 gap in sales between California Gurls & OMG isn't enough for #1? I know the gap on Mediabase was around 74,000, but Billboard doesn't use those numbers.

Sucks that iTunes sales is keeping this out of the top 10! :'(

Dunno The following will be before her: OMG California Gurls Not Afraid Nothin On You Break Your Heart Airplanes Your Love Is My Drug So I think she will have to sell more than 50,000 of: Hey Soul Sister or Need You Now Or more than 65,000 than Rude Boy I think that she barely makes the top ten, with Need You Now being displaced. Next week for sure

Telephone" by Lady Gaga featuring Beyonce tops the 2 million mark in paid downloads this week. It's the first all-female collaboration to reach this sales plateau in the digital era. Back in the old days of physical singles, two all-female collabos were certified by the RIAA for sales of 2 million copies: "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)" by Barbra Streisand and Donna Summer and "The Boy Is Mine" by Brandy & Monica
Song Scorecard: Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)" tops the 4 million mark in paid downloads in its 78th week. It's the 15th song to reach this plateau. Six of the 15 songs are by female artists. Lady Gaga accounts for two. Ke$ha, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and now Beyonce all account for one. "Single Ladies" won a Grammy for Song of the Year earlier this year. This is the second year in a row that the winner in that category has been a 4-million seller.

So are we thinking CG will debut at #2? I thought with the way the pop bars looked it was almost a shoo in for #1....oh well. I don't think Miley is gonna be #1 next week though- her song is nowhere near as "instant" as CG, and it will have the competition of OMG and CG and the Eminem song etc.
I think CG is gonna get some big airplay though, and will continue to be strong on iTunes, and will eventually be #1.

CG won't debut at #1. It will most likely get there eventually though unless something crazy happens. I don't think CBT is competition-it will most likely be blocked by Usher/Katy. I believe it will sell very well, but not enough for a #1.

Eminem is the only straight up rapper. Bad Robot is on the money.
It's not fair to put those others in the same category as Eminem.
"Tik Tok" - Kesha (Not a rapper) "Imma Be" - Black Eyed Peas (a couple wanna be rappers) "Break Your Heart" - Taio Cruz featuring Ludacris (a r&b singer) "Rude Boy" - Rihanna (a r&b singer) "Nothin' on You" - B.o.B featuring Bruno Mars (A rapper who also sings in most of his stuff) "OMG" - Usher featuring will.i.am (a r&b singer)
