JACK JOHNSON’S CHART SEA CHANGE New Album Will Debut With Between 240-250k, Easily Going #1
June 2, 2010
It’s summer and surf’s up, so what better time Jack Johnson to hang 10 on next week’s HITS Album chart. His new Brushfire/Universal Republic album, To the Sea, will easily be the #1 record next week, with a range of 240-260k in sales. His last release, Sleep Through the Static, came out in Feb. 2008, with a first-week total of 375k.
Next highest debut will be Mercury/IDJ U.K. hip-pop producer/writer/performer Taio Cruz, who’s already topped the stateside singles chart with “Break Your Heart,” featuring Ludacris. His stateside bow, Rokstarr, is the week’s next highest debut, with a total anywhere from 22-27k.
Decca American Idol alum Clay Aiken’s new album, Tried and True, looks on target for 17-20k in first-week sales.
Hitting retail next Tuesday, there’s yet another Columbia Glee Cast album, along with Chop Shop/Atlantic’s Twilight Saga: Eclipse, RCA/RMG’s Christina Aguilera, Sire’s Against Me!, Valory’s Jewel, Universal Republic’s Lil Jon, Atlantic’s Plies, Reprise’s Iyaz, Hollywood’s Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, Capitol Nashville/EMI’s Dierks Bentley and Fueled by Ramen’s Travie McCoy, among others.
The market was down 6% vs. last week, down 13% vs. same week last year and down 11% year to date. Those figures are chillier than Al and Tipper’s marriage, one of our precious few natural resources seemingly impervious to global warming.

Great numbers for Jack Johnson. I wonder if he can keep Christina from hitting the top spot next week ? Probably not.
Flop for Taio Cruz. When will these new artists learn that relying on a more established featured artist to carry you on a song leads to nothing but a flop album 9 out of 10 times. Maybe when Dynamite explodes (no pun intended) it will at least keep the sales steady ?

Those are indeed decent figures for Jack Johnson, but those figures also suggest that his fanbase is softer than the Dave Matthews Band's (where there is a lot of crossover appeal)
Last year, which is by far the worst complete year in terms of CD sales to date, the Dave Matthews Band were nonetheless able to nearly equal first-week sales of "Stand Up", which was released four years prior. It was only a single-digit decline percentage-wise from era to era.
In comparison, these figures suggest a decline about 30% in terms of total first-week sales from "Sleeping Through The Static" to "To The Sea". That's still more than decent compared to a vast majority of his contemporaries, but what these numbers tell me is that there are notably fewer Dave Matthews Band fans who also are steady Jack Johnson CD buyers than Jack Johnson fans who are also Dave Matthews Band CD buyers.
Still, I bet the industry is more than comfortable with these numbers amidst the pitiful state of it otherwise.

I guessed around 250,000 for Jack. Those are great numbers really for someone who is only getting AAA radio play. He has a solid fanbase and will probably do very well international (something that DMB doesn't really do).

I knew Jack Johnson would do the business! Proud of him giving his great figures for the #1. Although Taio Cruz' sales are piss poor, he'll still have a top 10 album, which is nothing to sniff about especially for a British artist.

I am however, quite scared that Glee & Twilight will outsell Christina next week.

Quick sidenote about Jack Johnson: My sister and her husband are HUGE JJ fans. So much so that they invited him to their wedding a few months back to perform. Of course, he couldn't make it, haha, but he did write them a letter thanking them for the invite and wishing them well in their marriage. I thought that was pretty cool of him. So, even though I'm not the biggest fan of his music, I'm pulling for him and glad he has some nice opening week numbers.

He will miss the Top 10 most likely, but can possibly scrape the Top 10. It doesn't matter, those sales are absolutely atrocious with a massive hit, and massive airplay on pop, rhytmic, and solid on HAC.

Well with Taio AND Jason, they are good examples of what happens when you release your album too far after your #1 and don't promote it well enough.
I like T, but is he in the UK? He could be over here (in usa) on talk shows and such....

He could be over here (in usa) on talk shows and such.... He was on Regis & Kelly today and is on Kimmell on the 10th. Yes more promo would help with better opening week sales but honestly having a smash hit is the best promo you can get. And he is getting tons of airplay across pop, rhytmic ,and HAC. The single has sold over 2 Million copies you would think more than 22-27K people would be interested in picking up an album. I think it has to do with featured artists. A new artist needs to stand on their own two feet not rely on rent a rappers and featured artists. Or maybe people just aren't interested in these male pop-r&b artists. I enjoy "break your heart" and "Dynamite" but I wouldn't pick up his album..too generic. Jason Derulo, Jay Sean, Taio Cruz..sometimes it's hard to tell their music apart. Will be interesting to see what happens once "Dynamite" starts to smash.

Taio's numbers are horrible i thought for sure he would outsell all the other new male pop artists, guess i was wrong but then again i'm not shocked he's on IDJ and they haven't been very good with promo lately, i hope he does at least 100K when it's all said and done

Jack Johnson is getting AAA, Alternative, and Hot AC airplay... but that's still insanely good! Ouch at Taio's numbers. Having had a hit as big as "Break Your Heart", it should be selling better. OUCHer at Clay's numbers. Not that I care, I'm no Clay fan.
