in which world 200k is a flop? besides, first week sales means very little in the long run. The key is how long it can sustain its sales. ke$ha only opened with 100k and she's approaching 1 million total sales already. I can see katy easily has as good a run as kesha if not better.

Here is one - when I have time I am sure I can find others I said MOST people. MOST. I still don't know why its such a hard thing to acknowledge though. What's the big deal? How much do you think was about the publicity anyway? I think a few people are picking away at my posts just for the sake of it at this point. If I really had the time I could probably test the word "MOST" to see if that is true but I don't care that much at this point. I gave one example, there are certainly others but...I was attempting to acknowledge that popular opinion (although not my view on this topic) is what it is and we should find something else to talk about.

Oh Geesh. LOL I'm actually not mad at you are anything. I'm coming to the discussion late and was surprised to see all the hubbub about what appeared to me to be not such an out of the way thing. I really was curious about what you thought, I'm not trying to "pick away" at your posts. It really is just like having to convince people that Keysha Cole is very popular to me... it's like why is that a big deal, what's so hard about it? I didn't mean to make you feel attacked, just trying to understand where you are coming from. I have no problem with you. So whatever then, let it drop.

Katy Perry does double duty at No. 1 this week on both the Billboard 200 albums chart and the Digital Songs tally thanks to the arrival of her "Teenage Dream" album. Her second Capitol effort starts atop the Billboard 200 with 192,000 according to Nielsen SoundScan -- marking her best sales week and a new chart high. She's the first solo woman to reign at No. 1 since January, when Ke$ha's "Animal" spent one week atop the list

^^^ "Slow and steady wins the race", "it's a marathon not a sprint", "it's not about how you start but how you finish", etc, etc Sounds like an excuse. There is no way you can project that. We will see what the drop is next week. If it's over a 50% drop. Game over. Of course I can project that and pretty safely as well, I can't read int the future but I can make an educated guess based on a number of albums in the last couple of years that have opened with similar totals but have gone on to sell well into the 1 Million plus territory. I'm fairly certain that this album will sell 1 Million + copies. The drop next week will certainly be more than 50%, most likely 60-65% which is a standard 1st to 2nd week drop. Teenage dream will keep the album selling steadily and she has at least two more big hits on this album that imo will keep this album selling. Don't forget about a possible re release. Katy isn't exactly releasing the type of music that makes people roar out to the stores and buy in bulk. The point is she's had 2 huge hits and she should have done at least more than 200k. She's as much of an album seller as Jason Derulo or Taio Cruz... she just had more buzz because she isn't new in the industry. The album is a flop so far for the numbers it pulled, but of course it won't be seen as a flop because her label is going to be pimping that she had the #1 album in the country and such stuff. The general public cares about that, they don't care about how much she sold to be #1. Katy a Derulo or a Taio Cruz ? gee, how did you work that one out ? Derulo's and Taio's TOTALS are LESS than Katy's opening week. I can't see how you can call this album a flop. You will be feeling real stupid in a few months when this will be hitting the platinum mark. Haven't people learned already ?

Compared to other female singles artists - Rihanna, for instance, she's already opened bigger than any of her releases and peaked higher as well. This album will outpace One of the Boys, which has sold 1.3 million copies. It's done its job. For the hits she had, her 1st album should have sold more than 1.3 million. She's like Rihanna.

Gotta love HDD, they tell it like it is, lol:
"J/RMG American Idol winner Fantasia’s Back to Me racked up 122k, good for a #2 debut, after her suicide attempt and several subsequent TV appearances stirred up interest in the album."
LOL. I have to say I can't fully agree with them, bittersweet was a hit on Urban and Urban AC, she would have sold a respectable amount regardless imo.

Not everyone is Beyonce or Britney. Remember that US is not the only country where albums are released. This album will do very well globally. And the total, global sales of this album will be very good when this era runs its course.

LMAO I remember people predicting 700k opening week for Katy's album....
Just like I remember people calling Christina, Aguilegend and Godtina, and dumb shit like that.

I'm not sure how the 700K rumor got started, I think it had something to do with HDD predicting that Taylor might top Eminem's sales for recovery and somehow someway, someone misinterpreted this HDD report as relating to Katy. Lol, there was no way she would sell anywhere near that figure.

Just like Rihanna. lol, how is Rihanna a "singles artist" when GGGB sold well over 7.5 Million copies, LMAO, that's more than either of Beyonce's last two albums for example. Rated R sold around 3 Million as well I beieve. I'm sorry but she is not a singles artist. She sells a huge amount of singles true but she sells albums too.

GGGB with 8 hits (and 3 #1s) in the US sold only 2.8 million. That's a singles artist to me. I don't care for WW sales, they're inflated. US numbers are more accurate.

In the US she just passed 2.5 million with GGGB, with 6-7 hits that's indeed a "singles artist" number for a 2007 album. Also, Rihanna never debuted above 200k either. Rated R didn't reach a million even though it was the follow up to GGGB (not even a 200k debut) so yeah, pretty much Rihanna and Katy are the same, except Rihanna started out when sales were still a bit better.

Wow, now people are really reaching. It's funny cause I'm not a Rihanna fan at all, but seriously come on. You can't call anyone that sells that many albums a "singles artist" no matter how many singles they have released.
You are missing the point. The point is to sell albums, some artists sell albums with fewer singles others need more to achieve similar figures. Flo Rida is someone who is a singles artist.

Eh. Rihanna may be a "singles artist" in America, but not so much on a larger scale (WW - yes, sales outside the U.S. actually do matter :O). Also, while sales information in America may be more accurate, I'd argue global figures (aka estimations) aren't too off base in most cases (let's not pretend we all haven't taken those global estimations quite seriously in order to glorify our favorite artists from time to time).

Anyone who predicted 700K for Katy was off their rocker. Most people expected around 200k, including myself. They are respectable sales especially for August (typically a slower sales month). Not groundbreaking, but decent.

But you're not making a point, because Flo Rida or Jason Derulo sell even less than Katy. Rihanna is still more of a valid comparison, because she happens to be at her 5th album soon, yet she never broke 200k in the first week either. I just don't see how a pop act starting out in 2008 is supposed to be selling more albums than she is now, when she's actually beating several debut weeks of established female acts that came out in the last 12 months.

Rated R should reach a million here in the states. What is it at now? With christmas sales and her next album coming out (New eras help out the previous album a little bit see: Circus and Blackout, Teenage Dream and One of the bOys, Recovery and Relapse) she should push past a million

I'm not even a Rihanna stan, but the hate for her is sometimes so strong that I only feel compelled to respond when it's about her. I hate to do this (because I love B), but how much did Beyonce sell with IASF? Didn't she need 7 singles to get her (essentially) the same amount of sales that GGGB got (domestically and internationally)? Would she be considered a singles artist too?

I've always been confused by the "single's artist" label. Is it an artist that doesn't debut with 400k or is it an artist who doesn't move albums at all?
If we take someone like Rihanna, her latest effort Rated R had 1 #1 + 1 solid hit (RR WW, Hard US) and came out platinum in the US and 2.5-3 million WW. I would say that is a quite strong hit-single:album ratio both domestically and internationally these days especially for an artist like her.
Regarding her past releases, her WW sales for GGGB (7.5-8) are on par or better than any other similar project released around that time. AGLM generated ~3-3.5 WW, with 1 Smash & 2 Solid Hits. MOTS ~2 million on 1 smash. I would say her figures are pretty impressive especially considering the rate at which she drops them.
Because she has yet to debut with huge numbers, is it really fair to group her in with someone like Flo Rida who can't move more than 0.5 WW with a release?

^Exactly. There are so many inconsistencies with calling Rihanna a "singles artist". One being "A Girl Like Me" selling well over 3 million copies worldwide with 2 hits which is a pretty even hit single-album ratio. Another being the fact that she's had an album sell 7.5 million copies which really should just completely kill that argument completely. (I mean really ) And didn't the first single from Rated R flop? For someone ya'll claim to rely so heavily on singles, she got her highest first week sales with RR and reached platinum success when 2 of the singles released this era were disappointments and only 1 was a solidified hit.

Well she's coming off "Good Girl Gone Bad" era. I would hope she can push some type of units with 3 Top 10 hits (two of them being solid) and a black Friday release.

When you compare her album sales to her single sales (her albums sold a fifth of what her singles sold in total), it's clear she's a singles artist in the US.

I guess the only album artists these days are those who fail to score a top 10 hit but still sell a healthy amount of albums, i.e. Mary J. Blige, Sade, Susan Boyle, Barbra Streisand and of course country acts.
