In addition to the 90s, I've also been thinking about the last decade. I did make my own personal Top 100 favourite songs of the decade last year but looking back over it now, it doesn't contain many significant pop hits. It left me wondering about how different the 2000s seem to be in relation to any other year. With the internet playing such a huge role, I feel as if the big pop hits that occurred in the last decade haven't had as big a longterm effect on popular culture the way pop hits from decades past have. For example, when you think of the 80s, there's always a list of songs that anyone can come up with that they think about and chances are, a lot of those songs will overlap for different people. Same thing with the 90s (ie. Nirvana, Ace of Base, Alanis Morissette, Goo Goo Dolls, etc, etc, etc) but with the 2000s, I feel as if there hasn't been as much a defining list of songs because there was SO much music available and SO many different levels of *hit status* or *success*. You have your pop hits, yeah. But then you also have the underground hits that were big enough to actually helped define the decade. So my task is this. I want us all to try to come up with a list of songs that we can say defines the 2000s. From 2000-2009. Like the 90s topic, I'm looking for songs that helped shape the generation, were too big too ignore, or somehow had an effect on society or a story to tell that fits in with defining the 2000s.
(And, like the 2000s, we should try to not limit ourselves to many hits by a few people. I have nearly 10,000 songs on my iTunes alone from 2000-2009. Surely we can share the love.)

^ there's only 4-5 I can agree with. Keri Hilson - I Like, defined the decade? LAWL Even my faves Archie and Jojo don't belong. I Like was a big hit in Germany where it was released. They helped define the decade for me. Even though many of the songs I posted weren't big mainstream hits, they still did their part in helping shape society and were a part of different music scenes all over the world. The music scene isn't just made up of mainstream stuff, y'know.

The music scene isn't just made up of mainstream stuff, y'know. Definitely agree. I think the 2000s is absolutely a good example of that because so many lists included non-mainstream stuff. So much so, that I'm curious to see what the big hits actually were that were big in mainstream so I kinda was looking for the agreed-upon mainstream hits that shaped the decade for this particular topic. Good suggestions so far, guys!

^Yes, but I think the so-called issue may be that it's looking like a favorites list instead of something with more rigor. To select for example a remix of Oh No! by Marina and the Diamonds is extremely odd to me, especially because the original is much more true to something really impacting social fabric of the world - it's message juxtaposed with its ordinary composition, but then woven with an emotive, idiosyncratic delivery is what lands Marina on the list. I agree with most of your choices because I love them, BUT how can society be shaped if it's not mainstream to an extent? Most people exist within mainstream. Are the ideas in the songs you chose reflective of society and do they have a reciprocity or perhaps predecessor-esque relationship to the mainstream? Sure, but I think mainstream is the core because people know it and hear it and are shaped by it more easily.
It goes either way. It's why I'm hesitant to make a list. I don't listen to mainstream at all except if I'm on here and see a song people are raving or complaining about and especially now that I'm in school so my list would be more personal, which I think is maybe out of place here.

Sure, but I think mainstream is the core because people know it and hear it and are shaped by it more easily. Well, first of all, when I picked that Marina remix, I wasn't trying to say that it made a big impact with its lyrics or the way that Marina delivered her vocals and lyrics to the song. I picked that because I think this remix defines a certain type of sound or style that's in and trendy in dance music these days. Also, the topic asked for songs that helped shaped the generation as one of its criteria, not songs that helped shaped most of the generation. I took that as meaning that it was ok to include songs that didn't have huge, mainstream success.

I don't really disagree with your list except petty qualms with some of them, but I think they are all justified. It's just tricky to address an entire generation with something only a small percentage of the generation has heard or experienced. Reality is large groups wont be thinking about some indie artist's album track in 20 years. I personally think a list about songs that reflect the 2000s socially/culturally/etc would be equally interesting.

Yeah, this could be a fun project! We can actually make a panel of people to decide and come up with a list of criteria (ie. I don't want it to be a recreation of the CHR/Pop decade lists or whatever). So like, depending on the number of people on the panel, we can require that in order for a song to make the final list, we'd need X number of panel members to justify why a song should make the list. (which we would later use for the commentary on the song in question when the final list gets posted ;) )
