They're tasteless morons with more money than they know what to do with. J.Lo has also made millions off of playing Birthday parties and other private events. And, please define "thought leaders." doesn't matter JLO has never gotten paid as much as Christina for a private gig. Christina has had 2 huge world tours, Jlo hasn't. I'd say I'll wait for Christina's next album and to see if she embarks on her world tour to prove u wrong again. Weren't u claiming Burlesque OST was a huge flop, yet its the biggest selling soundtrack of the year. Burlesque's Soundtrack sales are piss poor compared to other musical Soundtracks in recent years, so I'm not seeing your point. Hell, even the damn Juno Soundtrack went Platinum and that wasn't even a musical. Oh, and keep pretending it's a Xtina album, lol. Again, what does this private gig nonsense prove? There will always be someone willing to spend money on something, no matter how weird, banal, useless, irrelevant, etc.

Christina had her moment, but I don't see her being remembered as a musical icon outside of her most passionate fans. The main thing she has going for her legacy is her voice, but it's not nearly as spine-chilling or well-controlled as the holy trinity of Mariah, Celine, and Whitney, nor does it have the emotional potency of someone like Adele (not calling Adele a legend, just comparing vocals).
Few of her songs will probably be remembered for years to come ("Beautiful" and "Lady Marmalade" are the only ones that spring to mind, maybe "Moves Like Jagger" but that'll be remembered as a M5 song if it lasts). She'll probably go down as evidence of Mariah and Whitney's influence on the music world, which will sound harsh and catty to some, but that seems to be her trajectory as of now. But who knows, maybe she'll turn things around in the next few years.

Why they'd actually waste so much on her when an ill-tempered cat could produce similar noise is beyond me, but what can you do?

And, please define "thought leaders." Oh... ya know... innovators, visionaries, ahead-of-the-curve, forward-thinking people who are able to assert influence and change outcomes through the sheer force and power of their ideas. What can I say? Christina appeals to that crowd and they are willing to pay millions to hear her sing... that's just the way it is!

If it were to go Platinum by some gob-smacking miracle I likely wouldn't be saying anything, seeing as how I'll be dead by then. There were no notable movie soundtracks in 2010, so I'm not seeing the point of touting it as being the best selling of the year. That's like saying the film was a hit since it was the biggest musical of the year when in fact it was the *only* musical of the year and couldn't even finish in the 2010 Top 75.

Maybe because it came out at the end of 2010 in November. It's more of a 2011 album. Tron was a huge critically-acclaimed soundtrack. Nice try tho.

Christina is a big name. She was like the biggest thing on the planet when "beautiful" came out. I'd put her on par with other women who were the biggest thing for a short period of time and who have managed to stay in the public eye, like Paula Abdul and J-Lo. Slightly behind people like Janet. Maybe also on par with Alicia Keys, Kelly Clarkson. Way behind Madonna, Britney.

She is way behind J.Lo. Britney & J.Lo were the biggest female names at their peak together. And at present day, Christina is still way behind J.Lo, along with Britney as well obviously.
Christina was never once "the biggest thing on the planet". Big? Yes. But like others have said in this thread, there was always someone out at the same time that was bigger and more successful.

Christina is definitely ahead of Jennifer Lopez (seriously? ), and I'd say she's ahead of Alicia Keys and Kelly Clarkson, too.

Are YOU serious? J.Lo is a bigger name than Christina in every way. She's dominated all aspects of entertainment. Christina could only dream to have the success Jen has had and is still currently attaining.

J.lo is definitely the bigger star overall but in terms of solely music career (as Christina is limited to just this front), Christina has made more impact musically than she has. I think when most people think of Jlo now, her music career isn't really what pops up first. *cue where is J.lo's cultural rank thread*
IA with the fact that Christina was always outshined by someone else though. Back in 2003, it seemed like she was competing with Kelly Clarkson and well, Kelly has done more since then than Christina so.....

People are really short changing Alicia. With Alicia's acclaim and success, I don't even see how Christina is close to her.

Totally disagree, especially since she just got the biggest hit of her career with On The Floor. J.Lo was always known as the triple threat. So I think that's what pops into people's mind when they hear her name. The actress/singer/dancer. And I don't feel as if Christina made a bigger impact on music than Jen did. Jen has far more memorable singles and Jen was able to be successful in both Latin pop/dance and R&B.

Christina is definitely ahead of Jennifer Lopez (seriously? ), and I'd say she's ahead of Alicia Keys and Kelly Clarkson, too. I guess it depends if we're talking about legacy or current status. I'd say Kelly and JLo are ahead of Christina right now, and in terms of legacy...JLo is close, and I'd put Kelly ahead, for now. She'll always have the legacy of American Idol tattooed onto her career, and I'd say Breakaway was bigger than any Christina era. And Kelly's current era is off to a better start than Christina's last.

Hmmm, Christina's debut era was bigger than the Breakaway era no? Christina had the #1 singles, the sales and was apart of the teen pop explosion. Along with the infamous Britney "feud". She was everywhere.
