So we have all seen what has happened to GaGa this era. She has had a ton of success, but because it's not as big as TF/TFM, people like to proclaim she's "flopping" or "underperforming" when most artists would KILL for that kind of success. Do you think Katy and Adele are doomed the same fate?

They aren't "doomed". Lady Gaga was not doomed either. It is just that some people have unrealistic expectations of success.
Their popularity is bound to decline, but they both will be quite successful. Britney Spears continues to have a lot of success after the massive success of her debut album and I expect similar long term success for Adele. Katy may have a quicker demise, but the next few albums should have success.

They'll be fine for now.
Adele's next era is probably going to be really frontloaded and a lot shorter, but that's to be expected. Even she's said that she's aware that she'll never have an era anywhere like this again. As for Katy's downfall, people were saying the exact same thing about Rihanna when the GGGB era was winding down.

I meant doomed in terms of perception. Like GaGa kind of was. Not doomed to actually flop. Which is why I put flop in quotes.

GaGa just confused everybody, but the music was quality. If Katy and Adele continue to keep the same gimmicks for the next era then they are most certainly doomed. Isn't Katy like 25 or something - bubble gum pop is going to look ridiculous on her at that age. And if Adele continues with the broken heart anthems, then, yeah, everyone will finally tell her to GET THE FUCK OVER IT.

If they keep doing the same thing people will get bored of them. If they change too much, people won't like that either because they fell in love with what they were originally. So... pop stars have to change with time but not make drastic changes from one era to the next, which is pretty hard to do, I'd say.

I don't think they will dominate like they did this year, but everything will turn out fine for them.

I meant doomed in terms of perception. Like GaGa kind of was. Not doomed to actually flop. Which is why I put flop in quotes. Well, with this definition in mind, Adele is not really doomed, but Katy is, because of the types of artists they are and the expectations that people usually have according to those types. It's highly unlikely that Adele will have an era as wildly successful as this, but honestly no one thought this era would be as wildly successful as it is. And that lack of expectation seems to be carrying over to the next era as well...people are already conceding (without insult) that the next era will probably open well but then probably peter out early. She isn't the type of artist to do conspicuously heavy promo or media blitzes and no one is looking for that to change. The best comparison I can think of is Norah Jones (no one was disappointed when her second album 'only' sold a few million compared to her diamond debut b/c people weren't checking for her in that way). On the other hand, the second Katy has a single that doesn't go straight to #1 people will shriek that she is 'losing' her shine. Essentially, 'typical' pop artists are only as good as their last song (in fact for some people it's not even enough to be as good as your last song - you have to be demonstrably better with every single release you make). And they are expected to want to be on top all the time and to go out of their way to ensure that by promoting heavily and making songs that pander to CHR. Oh, and they must pander in the same way that they pandered before (so no hopping from pop to singer-songwriter stuff or experimenting with too many different sounds). But they can't pander the exact same way b/c that means they're stagnant and have hit a creative dead end. So if Katy doesn't pander people will turn on her for trying to jump out of her lane (see MD, Rated R, 4), and if she does pander but doesn't immediately bowl everyone over with awesomeness people will say she's fallen off, and if she misses even one morning show or skips out on interviewing with one magazine people will be upset with her for not promoting enough. It's so predictable and silly. Other than Britney's first two albums I'm really struggling to think of any 21st century female pop artist who managed to have a huge, career defining era and then maintain or improve upon that level of success for the next era. Before Brit, the only ones I can think of who did it are Mariah, Whitney, Celine, and Madonna. And well, obviously those four are just different and came from a different time period. The odds aren't in Katy's favor for being an exception.

Adele and Katy will not see eras like these again but they will both do fine.

Are they "doomed" on this forum? Probably. To the general public? Doubtful.

I'm not sure I understand the question. Lady GaGa is not "doomed" in terms of success, I'd call the Born This Way era a massive hit overall even if it wasn't on the levels of her first era. If you mean in terms of perception...well, people will have unrealistically high expectations that neither of them will be able to meet, so yeah, probably. Like Touch the Fire Twice said, it'll effect Katy more because she lives and dies by the success of her singles while Adele seems to have an established following that will stick with her whether or not she has hit singles.

Lol no They will probably not have as great of eras, but Adele will release a great cd and a lot of people will be interested. Katy will release a lot of really catchy fluffy pop music that people will go hysterical over. The biggest issue would be if either does something unpredictable-Adele releasing a rock cd or something or Katy deciding she doesn't want to be radio friendly. But, I doubt either will happen.

I think Adele's next album will probably get more acclaim than pop radio airplay, unless she actually makes a poppier album.
Katy will likely be whatever the trend is at that point and will probably have a few big hits.

I don't think their third albums will do as well as their second (although I can see both of their lead singles going to #1 on the Hot 100 on hype), but I don't think either one of them will flop either.

Adele's next album will sell well, but she'll hardly get any airplay. Katy will get more airplay, but I can't see her album sales being too hot.

I see Adele only getting about two top 10 hits, but still selling boatloads of albums. She'll probably be fine if she spices up her lyrical topics a little. If anything, Katy will more likely be in trouble; not trying to say she is, though. If she keeps the sounds from TD, I see her only having four top 10 hits and her album barely selling as much as her debut at the end of its run.

No. Katy will rack at least 2 more #1's next era, and Adele will sell millions of albums.

I don't expect either of them to match the success of their current eras (ever, not just their third albums), but they'll still be successful. People who call Born This Way a flop era are idiots.

They'll both do fine next era. Two eras from now is when they'll start hurting if the next era sucks.
And Born This Way was not a flop era. It was more successful than it had any right to be.

Well I think Katy will. Pretty soon Dr. Luke will be washed out and people will get sick of that sound. Almost every hit she has released was from Dr.Luke/Max Martin. I can tell you for a fact I am getting tired of it. She needs to find herself. I just feel a void when she sings, put some heart into it.
Short answer yes she will start to fade, unless she changes her act.

As long as Katy doesn't fuck it up like GaGa this year, she'll be okay. But she won't be as hot on the charts since her breasts are already sagging.
Adele, she'll still sell. She just needs to stay big and not lose weight. She'll alienate her fans

I love how everyone automatically thinks Adele is set for her future projects and longevity in popular culture. She could very well go down the Alanis road.

None of them are "doomed" . Life has ups and downs. Some years will sell more records than others. So what. They are all super young with many years ahead of them. Who would have thought KISS or Rolling Stones would still be touring into the golden prostate years?
