Of the previous WGWGs I think Phillip is most similar to Lee DeWyze. An improved version of Lee, but still. Lee.
Best case scenario is that Universal will take him more in a Damien Rice/solo Rob Thomas direction, with well-written songs and lush production. Worst case scenario is that the guy can't write worth crap and they filter his poor-man's-Dave-Matthews tendencies through terrible Ryan Tedder leftovers.
Either way, he won't be a CHR artist and I tentatively have my bets on them putting more effort behind Jessica anyway, so I'm not expecting much in the way of sales. This way when he does anything over 60k I can call it a pleasant surprise.

If his album goes in the same direction as "Home" it could be great.

Sounds like he's going to do what Matt Cardle, winner of X-Factor in 2010, did. Rabbit on endlessly about what a 'real artist' he is, alienating his built-in fanbase and doing nothing to appeal to fans of 'real artists', while releasing fucking boring ballads that nobody likes. I give him eighteen months (Matt lasted seventeen).

I love these people who go on American Idol but talk about what "real" artists they are. You just sold yourself to a huge corporate machine. If you were so set on being a "real" artist you wouldn't have used the show to get recognition. Deal with the consequences.

I kinda wish he would stop talking down on "Home". I mean it's getting a really good response from the public so he should just keep quiet. I'm sure most of the idols weren't crazy about their coronation singles but it doesn't mean you should be too vocal about it. Nevertheless I'm really happy he won and I'm excited for what he has in store for us.

Oh, PhilPhil. Hush and enjoy the surprising feeling of success.
It's funny that he's talking it down when it is truly the first winners' song that is just a normally written song, and not some treacly mess about how a moment like this is his now and makes him believe he's flying without wings inside his heaven of no boundaries and he hopes he makes you proud that he's having the time of his life because he loves you this big (...did I get them all?). Does he not realize he dodged a big bullet? The song is actually really nice; for an Idol winner song that is rare. It's Mumfordy, not too pop as he declared it.
I wish I could find some of his pre-Idol stuff to listen to and get a sense of his writing abilities.

^Thanks! It's okay. Not bad, but the lyrics and melody are pretty predictable, and not distinctly superior to "Home," either. Assuming his other stuff is on the same level, if I were him I wouldn't get on too high a horse about needing to be true to his artistic guns. This song doesn't even stray that far from "Home" stylistically speaking. He's not reinventing the wheel here by any means.
I really don't think he realizes how much "Home" fits in him as an artist. That's a good thing and he needs to run with it.

His winning song, "Home" is holding steadily at #1 on iTunes. I don't remember any recent past winners doing that, but I could be wrong.

David Cook's "Time of My Life" did, it debuted on the digital chart at #1 with 236k. That would be the only winner's song to do so in the iTunes era; all other winner's songs that were successful had physical releases. "Home" seems on track to debut as well as TOML.

I commend him for sticking with Idol through all the pain. That takes a lot. From what I know, Idol is the equivalent of musical/entertainment bootcamp.

I don't remember for how long though. but when his debut album came, most of those buyers moved on already. Does P2 have any self released songs or albums? I have no idea what kind of songs he can write. funny thing with these wgwg winners is that their long term success depend on their songwriting ability which is totally untested.

Phillip and Scotty were both able to stay at #1 for 3 days each.

Not sure I believe this. People magazine said he was going back to Georgia to have his surgery.

He doesn't wanna do anything like 'home' which even non-p2 fans liked. I think i know where this is going.
But, hopefully Jimmy/Universal goes into the adult contemporary promotion avenue. Don't even try pop at all.

Phillip Phillips Makes 'Idol' History as 'Home' Sells 278,000 Downloads by Keith Caulfield, L.A. | May 30, 2012 4:15 EDT "American Idol" winner Phillip Phillips earns the highest debut on the Digital Songs chart this week as his "Home" bows at No. 2 with 278,000 downloads sold according to Nielsen SoundScan. Even better: It's the second-best digital sales week ever for any "Idol" contestant. Only Kelly Clarkson's 2009 song "My Life Would Suck Without You" had a bigger frame, when it debuted with 280,000 downloads. That may come as a surprise, considering the lengthy careers -- and stellar sales -- of such successful "Idols" as Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. Underwood's best sales week for a song came in 2009, when her "I Told You So" (featuring Randy Travis) started with 125,000. 'American Idol' Has Lowest-Rated Finale Ever "Home" also marks the biggest sales week for any "Idol" winner's coronation single since SoundScan began tracking downloads in 2003. It surpasses David Cook's "The Time Of My Life," which debuted with 236,000 in 2008. Before downloads replaced the CD single as the predominant format for buying songs, two other "Idol" finalists had larger sales weeks than Phillips with their season-finale singles. At the end of "Idol's" second season in 2003, Clay Aiken's "This Is The Night" CD single launched with 393,000 in its first full week of sales. Meanwhile, winner Ruben Studdard saw his "Flying Without Wings" start with 286,000. Phillips' arrival this week is also the fourth-largest debut of the year. It trails Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend" (521,000), Maroon 5's "Payphone" featuring Wiz Khalifa (493,000) and Katy Perry's "Part of Me" (411,000). Justin Bieber Releases 'Die In Your Arms' Song: Listen Phillips also debuts on Digital Songs at No. 41 with "We've Got Tonight" (43,000) and No. 54 with "Volcano" (35,000). As a note: The weekly sales of songs by "American Idol's" contestants are withheld from SoundScan (and from appearing in the iTunes Store's own popularity lists) while its TV season is in progress. Fox and "Idol" does this in order to keep from influencing the voting public in the course of the season. Once the show has concluded, the sales are then reported to SoundScan, and in turn, Billboard. The sales reported this week are only for the week ending May 27. They are not for the entire season. As for the rest of the top 10 on the Digital Songs chart this week, Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" sits tight at No. 1 for a second frame, selling 301,000 (up 3%). Maroon 5's "Payphone" holds at No. 3 (265,000; down 6%) and Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know" (featuring Kimbra) drops two spots to No. 4 (just under 264,000; down 9%). Nicki Minaj's "Starships" falls one to No. 5 (153,000; down 12%) and fun.'s "We Are Young" (featuring Janelle Monae) is down 5-6 (149,000; down 8%). Pitbull's "Men in Black III" theme "Back In Time" jumps 11-7 with 147,000 (up 47%) and Rihanna's "Where Have You Been" climbs 13-8 (146,000; up 48%). The latter was performed by the diva on the May 23 season finale of "American Idol." Pitbull's tune benefits from "MIB's" opening in U.S. theaters on Friday, May 25. Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend" slips 7-9 (144,000; up less than 1%) and Flo Rida's "Wild Ones" (featuring Sia) closes out the top 10 at No. 10 -- down four spots -- with 135,000 (down 11%). Digital track sales this past week totaled 25.98 million downloads, up 4% compared to last week (24.95 million) and up 5% stacked next to the comparable week of 2011 (24.69 million). Year to date track sales are at 571.28 million, up 7% compared to the same total at this point last year (536.14 million). www.billboard.com/news#/news/phillip-phillips-makes-idol-history-as-home-1007187752.story

I hope he enjoys this week: 24k albums and 278k song downloads are quite possibly the peak of his career I'd like to see sales data for performances in previous weeks..

The single is still in the top 10 of iTunes and his album is #3. All this without any Idol promo due to illness. All the folks predicting doom and gloom for this guy are going to be disapointed. ;0

A few of the AI winners manage to get many co-writing credits on their debuts but I'm sure it's a big compromise with what the label wants, too. I'm sure PP can't wait to get out of his contract. But I don't have any sympathy for him either.

Welp, I don't know about him, but that's exactly the kind of album I want, haha (except for the "no moody or introspective," lol), so I'll be looking forward to this.
