Hot n Cold was the first major victory against what was expected, that it not only rivaled, but actually exceeded the predecessors success was extra. It was so big and lasted for so long that it overshadowed the third singles failure almost completely. That period was crucial because it showed her still finding success even as Gaga, BEP & Kesha made that sound somewhat obsolete very soon after. That foundation was what gave her a window to go further on TD.
I'd probably say that if there was a "turning point" it was Firework, that was when people generally stopped thinking of her as someone who could just vanish next month. It solidified her as an A-list celebrity. Some thing that she wasn't considered by most in 2008-2009. For another example, Kesha never achieved that. They ran the message into the ground right up to that cringeworthy VMA acceptance speech, but it worked. And it managed to work without building a backlash on her.
Sometime in late 2010/early 2011 she just bumped up. That's when she started being seen as one of the BIG names in popular music, and that's still stuck.

I see you, Katy, trying to have your "Glitter in the Air" moment. I mean she has already done something similar when she performed "Not Like the Movies" at the Grammys.

I watched it over on YouTube for the first time post-Superbowl and it came across much better than it did when I watched it in real time during the halftime. I'd say Katy came across stronger than I remembered; Missy weaker than I remembered (if only because her set was obviously more cheaply produced). The first 3rd or so and the ending (Firework) were pretty good from Katy. However, my least favorite part (the only part I initially remembered, tbh) was the middle, "Teenage Dream" and "California Girls" because of the costumes and set design. Ugh. I can't take that much sugar, and that's the part of her act that, to me, needs to age.
I wouldn't go as far as to say I was inspired by any part of her performance, but after the second viewing I'd say it is nice to see pop stars put on something respectable that at least looks well put together and well thought out, featuring no glaring mistake. So many performances from pop stars seem like a hapless collage of sensory data and so many performers seem awkward. In bucking the norm, this was refreshing.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6458517/katy-perry-missy-elliott-super-bowl-sales-bump Katy Perry & Missy Elliott See Super Sales Bump Thanks to Super BowlBy Keith Caulfield | February 04, 2015 8:13 PM EST Plus: Lenny Kravitz's catalog of albums & digital songs rises by 111 percent Thanks to Katy Perry's Super Bowl halftime show, both she and guest star Missy Elliott earned some sizzling sales gains. In the week ending Feb. 1 -- the day of the big game -- Perry's albums and song downloads earned a 92 percent sales gain in the United States, according to Nielsen Music. Elliot, meanwhile, tallied a whopping 996 percent rise. The 2015 Super Bowl halftime show featured nine songs performed by Perry and Elliott (along with another guest star, Lenny Kravitz). Six of Perry's hits were showcased, while Elliott performed three of her own singles. The spectacular was the most-watched Super Bowl halftime show ever, according to Nielsen, with 118.5 million viewers. Let's break down the artists' individual sales for the week: Perry sold a total of 121,000 albums and song downloads in the week ending Feb. 1. Of that figure, 21,000 were albums (up 255 percent compared to 6,000 in the week previous) and 100,000 were song downloads (up 75 percent versus 57,000 in the previous frame). Elliott sold a combined 73,000 albums and song downloads for the week. Of that figure, 2,000 were albums (up 2,546 percent compared to a negligible total in the previous week) and 71,000 were song downloads (up 978 percent versus 7,000 in the previous frame). In terms of specific albums and songs from this year's two main halftime performers, the biggest-selling album of the Feb. 1 week was Perry's most recent release, Prism. It sold 9,000 copies (up 146 percent) and climbs 85-35 on the Top Album Sales chart dated Feb. 14. Perry also re-enters the chart with her two earlier albums: Teenage Dream (No. 38 with 8,000; up 527 percent) and One of the Boys (No. 75 with 4,000; up 263 percent). On the Billboard 200 chart, which ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, Prism flies 57-28 with 16,000 album equivalent units earned in the week (up 85 percent). Teenage Dream zips 152-33 (14,000 units; up 223 percent) and One of the Boys re-enters at No. 113 (5,000 units; up 204 percent). Perry's top-selling song of the Feb. 1 week was her halftime-opening tune "Roar," which sold just over 17,000 downloads. Two of Elliott's songs actually outsold "Roar," as "Work It" shifted 21,000 downloads (up 1,861 percent) and "Get Ur Freak On" moved 19,000 downloads (up 1,625 percent). The third song Elliott performed during halftime, "Lose Control," sold 17,000 (up 1,775 percent). What about Kravitz? He had a gain in sales as well. His catalog of albums and digital songs rose by 111 percent (11,000 for the week, as compared to 5,000 the week previous). He shifted 2,000 in album sales (up 154 percent) and nearly 9,000 in song downloads (up 102 percent). All three of Elliott's halftime-performed tunes debut on the Rap Digital Songs chart. "Work It," "Get Ur Freak On" and "Lose Control" arrive at Nos. 11, 13 and 15, respectively. (Why do the songs debut on the chart, even though they are quite old? The Rap Digital Songs chart launched in January 2010, years after those songs were released and were hits.) Finally, on the latest Social 50 chart -- which ranks the most popular artists of the week across social networks -- Perry zooms 6-2. It is her highest rank on the tally since the Nov. 16, 2013-dated chart, when she also was at No. 2. Elliott does not appear on the latest Social 50 but could see a rise onto the list next week, following a full week of activity post-game. Speaking of further impact next week, both Perry and Elliott could see additional sales increases once the first week of sales have been registered after the game. Next week's charts will reflect the week ending Feb. 8.

I think the turning point, or "make our break" was with Hot N Cold. Everyone was calling her a one hit wonder, then it ended up out outperforming IKAG in many aspects. But more than anything, it opened her up not only teen girls, but the moms. And she has delivered solid pop music ever since (with a few minor hiccups). But I totally agree, who would've ever guessed in '08 that it would be Katy doing the Super Bowl. I think what hurts artists like Gaga is that they do hit hard with the pop fans, but Katy's got the mass appeal on lock, just like T-Swift. What I find interesting is that Gaga had the Hot and Cold effect too. When Just Dance blew up, everyone thought that she would be a one hit wonder. Then she released Poker Face and it became an even bigger hit then Just Dance. I'm forgetting, did both Hot and Cold and I Kissed A Girl chart at number one on Billboard?

The SuperBowl caused A LOT of people to go on Vevo to watch her videos, especially "Dark Horse". "Dark Horse" is now the most viewed video of all time by a female: www.vevo.com/browse/top-videosI wouldn't be surprised if she eventually passes "Baby," becoming the most viewed video of all time. Katy's Vevo had 176,057,550 views in the past 30 days!

Well I will be the first to admit that I was wrong about the Dark Horse video. I thought it was a total bust when it was first released and that it missed the mark. Cutesty and cheesy but lacking in depth. I always envisioned a really serious, dark video for it.
But it definitely hit the mark and sold the song very well in retrospect.

Judging by the iTunes performance post Superbowl, I'm thinking that Roar and Dark Horse will join Firework as Katy's most remembered songs.

By the Grace of God
Just uploaded to her official Vevo account. It pretty much confirms she's gonna perform this song at the Grammys this weekend.

I think they are trying to showcase a completely different side to her from what the public saw at the Super Bowl.

For some reason Roar, Dark Horse, and Firework are increasing again on iTunes. I'm surprised that Roar is still top 50 a week after the Superbowl.
