Welcome to Mike's year-end countdown of the 40 Biggest Songs of the year 2012, according to the rankings on Mike's Top 20. Naturally, I'm Mike. Over the next four hours, we'll be hearing from a variety of songs - songs that many of us know and love, songs that maybe only a handful of us know about, songs that are reviled by many of us here on the board, and songs that we just. Could. Not. Escape from!! These are my 40 biggest, added up according to my Top 20 charts from throughout the year - starting with the first week of the year ending January 7, all the way through the last week of the year, ending December 29. You know the drill - 20 points for a week at #1, 19 points for #2, and so on down. Along the way, I'll reflect on the year gone by, tossing in some odd chart facts as we go, and mention some new records that were set during the year. All that and more - nonstop! So, without further ado...let my year-in-review of the year 2012, begin! (NOTE: I will NOT be posting embedded YouTubes in here - I've seen what happens to thread pages that end up chock full of YouTubes: They don't like to load after a while. So...instead I'll be posting them as standard website links.)

(Sorry for the delay, folks. I do so hate it when you set a time to get started, and Firefox decides it wants to freeze for a few minutes and then crash on you instead. >:( Anyways...) We kick things off with a song that's a holdover from last year. It spent the last two weeks of last year up at #2 - where it peaked, and it was down to #3 as we moved into the new year. #40 Nickelback, "When We Stand Together" Hanging on long enough to kick off this year's survey, here's Nickelback and "When We Stand Together"!

Leading off the survey at #40 is Nickelback with "When We Stand Together". They're one of twelve groups who place at least one hit in my year-end survey. Next is one of three movie songs in my year-end countdown. And this one's from the box office smash Hunger Games. Now...I haven't read the books, don't plan to - and neither did I go running to the theater when the movie came out. (I did end up seeing it once, and it was actually pretty good.) But the song I took notice of right when I first heard it - in a way, the lyrics can describe the pressures one can have to deal with from a vicious social environment (even a non-lethal one), and...thinking about it that way, it sort of helped draw me in to this song in spite of however I felt about the movie at the time. #39 Taylor Swift, "Eyes Open" Singing the first of her two songs in the countdown, here's Taylor Swift at #39 with "Eyes Open".(NOTE: I wanted to go with the clip that at least had pics of the cast, only to discover the sound quality on that one was really sub-par. )

She took that song to #7 back in May - at #39, that was Taylor Swift with "Eyes Open". Now, Taylor's one of seven artists who have at least two hits in this year-end survey - and here's another: Calvin Harris, who makes his first check-in here at #38. I caught onto this song a bit late, as it had only been on my chart for a few weeks by the time it began peaking at Pop radio. But I kept hearing it, I kept hearing it, and it kept going up, and it made it to #7 back in October. #38 Calvin Harris featuring Ne-Yo, "Let's Go" At #38 for the year, Calvin pairs with Ne-Yo on this one, and he's saying "Let's Go"!

"Let's Go" comes in as the 38th biggest song on my chart for the year 2012, and we'll hear Calvin in another pairing coming up later on.
Up next: Another man with two hits in the year-end survey - and this first one's a recent #1!

She had a bit of a tough time going up with that one - she debuted at #18 and stayed there for four weeks before finally starting to move. In the end, that's one of a few that I think would've done even better if it had been around longer in general. :(

You're tuned in to the Year In Review of Mike's 40 biggest songs of 2012. Here's the youngest song in my year-end survey - this one only came on to the chart at the beginning of November. And yet, it's already managed to blaze a path all the way to the top, and currently it's in a multi-song slugfest to get back up there! #37 Andy Grammer, "Miss Me" But that's enough to place this song right here at #37 for the year - "Miss Me" by Andy Grammer.

Back at #40, we heard "When We Stand Together" by Nickelback, and now at #37 is Andy Grammer with "Miss Me". Both songs spent only 9 weeks on the chart during the year 2012, but while Nickelback's were the first nine weeks of the year, Andy's were the last nine of the year. Chart symmetry - right here in Mike's year in review countdown. Next is a song that now holds a very odd chart record. This song spent more weeks at its peak position than any other - without hitting #1! It spent seven weeks stuck firmly in place right at #7 over the summer. #36 Gym Class Heroes featuring Ryan Tedder, "Fighter" At #36 is "Fighter" by the Gym Class Heroes featuring Ryan Tedder.

Ryan's band OneRepublic have done fairly well in recent years. They've had three top 10 hits on this chart, which were all represented in the past two year-end surveys. But this year, Ryan's the only one of the band to place, and he joins up with the Gym Class Heroes to do so right here at #36.
Up next: Another band...with another lucky #7!

These are Mike's 40 biggest, from the year gone by. Here's one of sixteen acts whose first chart appearance can be found in my year-end survey. Now, with a stat like that you'd think this was the Year of the Newcomer, wouldn't you? Well......not all of those acts are newcomers onto the overall music scene - these guys sure aren't. #35 Big Time Rush, "Music Sounds Better With You" They're originally from the TV show of the same name, and they're a group that didn't appear on my chart until this year - Big Time Rush, at #35 with "Music Sounds Better With You"!

They took that song to #7 back in February - at #35 for the year, Big Time Rush and "Music Sounds Better With You". And while they may be newcomers to Mike's chart, here's an act that's become no stranger to the chart in the years since its return. She makes only one appearance in the year-end countdown this year, however - right here, at #34. #34 Lady GaGa, "Marry the Night" Among the chart's favorites, here's Lady GaGa, and "Marry the Night"!(While I'll be linking to the videos normally, I decided against the nearly 14-minute clip on this one. )

She took that song to #6 for four weeks this past winter. At #34 for the year is Lady GaGa, with "Marry the Night". Next up at #33...is a song that couldn't quite figure out which way it wanted to go this year. It debuted as one of a 7-song blitz to hit the chart back in the middle of August, and it began moving up the chart very, very slowly. Fighting against a swarm of competition, it crawled up to #13, took a step back, then re-grouped and made it to the edge of the Top 10 - and that's where it looked like it was going to peak. It was a song that I'd hear from time to time, then it would disappear for a bit, then come back, then disappear again. By November, it seemed like the song might be disappearing for good. So it then shuffled down very quickly to the edge of the chart itself - and that's when it came back once again, with a vengeance! It began storming back upward, like it had a completely new life! Since then, it's gone up into the Top Five, where it's currently sitting now - and along the way, it's racked up enough points to come in right here at #33 for the year. #33 Ed Sheeran, "The A Team" Singing about the perils of drug addiction...... here's Ed Sheeran, with "The A Team".

I'm willing to bet we'll be hearing from this song again this time next year. And we could be hearing more from this man over the year to follow...hmmm? At #33 in my year-end countdown, is Ed Sheeran and "The A Team".
Up next: Lucky sevens, again??

Mike here, counting down my 40 biggest songs of 2012. This is the last of the lucky #7s to appear in the Top 40 for the year, this one hit that position back at the beginning of May. #32 The Wanted, "Glad You Came" At #32 are The Wanted, and they're "Glad You Came"!

One of six British acts in my year-end survey - with the 32nd biggest hit of the year, that's The Wanted and their song "Glad You Came". #31 JoJo, "Disaster" Next is the song that signalled the long-awaited comeback - or, at last, comeback attempt, from JoJo. It was her first single release in nearly four years, and while it didn't have the larger chart impact that she would have hoped for, it at least earned her some notice once again. She took this song to #5 for three weeks here on Mike's Top 20 - who knows, maybe it could have done even better if it had lasted long enough to be a bigger Pop hit, hmmmmm? At #31 for the year, here is "Disaster".

JoJo's one of thirteen solo women in my year-end countdown, and she comes in at #31 with "Disaster".
And I'll have another of those thirteen solo women kicking off the second hour, which incidentally has more than just a few women in it! Coming up: We'll hear from record-breakers, first-time-makers, and just plain movers and shakers as the review of Mike's Top 40 songs of the year continues...in a moment!

Here we go, launching into Hour Number Two of the year-in-review of Mike's Top 40 songs of the year 2012. In this hour, we have two chart appearances from the only act to place three in my year-end survey, along with the woman whose record she broke this year, and another woman, who made the biggest single-week chart move in years along with other facts, figures, and fun, so...let's GO!! Twenty-one songs managed to hit #1 during the year gone by, more than in any other chart year to date! We heard the first of them back at #37 with Andy Grammer's "Miss Me". And now here's another, the first of two #1 songs in my year-end countdown by Rihanna. #30 Rihanna, "Diamonds" Brightening things up at #30 for the year, this is "Diamonds"!

Later on, we'll hear "We Found Love" from Rihanna, but for now she's at #30 with "Diamonds". And next, at #29 is a band that's new to the scene. Now, this song that they took to #5 here was a song that charted solely over on Hot Adult Contemporary, rather than the Pop chart. And there's quite a few songs here in my year-end survey that did that exact same thing - the Hot AC station in my area of the country sounds rather fresh on a weekly basis, and it's given me a place to broaden my listening habits a bit. #29 Junior Doctor, "Uh Oh" My 29th biggest song of the year comes from the band Junior Doctor, and it comes with a feeling that they don't know, don't know... "Uh Oh"!

This is Mike's Top 40, for the year 2012. Here's a song that's had a consistent presence on the radio even after it's fallen off the pop charts. Made it to #3 in November, and it's still hanging around on the current survey. It ranks at #28 for the year...and it's a "Good Time"! #28 Owl City & Carly Rae Jepsen, "Good Time" Ladies and gentlemen: Owl City, and Carly Rae Jepsen.

Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen at #28 for the year, with "Good Time". Next, we're up to the only act to place three songs within my Top 40 of the year. Her first, is a song that debuted late in the year last year, but didn't quite earn enough points to make it in that year's survey. It just...barely missed out, finishing at #43 for that year. She took it to #1 in February, tying the record long held solely by Avril Lavigne, as it was her fifth #1 song in a row on my Top 20. #27 Katy Perry, "The One That Got Away" At #27, here's "The One That Got Away" by Katy Perry!

She's had another superstar year here in the Top 20 - at #27, that was Katy Perry with "The One That Got Away". #26 Avril Lavigne, "Wish You Were Here" And would you look at this! Back-to-back with Katy is the very woman whose record she tied that week back in February. Avril showed her the door with this one, her 12th #1 song overall on Mike's Top 20. Coming in at #26 for the year, it's "Wish You Were Here".

Counting down my biggest hits of the year, I'm Mike. At #25 is a song that debuted pretty high up - all the way up at #11. Looked like it had some promise, right? Well...she stalled for a bit right in that general area, then climbed for a month up to #3. Then, within another month - poof! Gone just like that. Yeah, this one had a bit higher of a burn factor. #25 Pink, "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)" Blowing the year one last kiss, at #25...here's Pink!

At #25 for the year, that was Pink with "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)". And next, is the woman we just heard from a few songs ago. She's had seven chart hits here, and all but one of them have hit #1. Here's the one that didn't quite make it there - it spent three weeks at #5. #24 Katy Perry, "Part of Me" At #24 for the year, here's Katy again with "Part of Me".
