Get out your brooms, people! We have 7 songs, including 3 ex-#1s, being swept outta here to make room for 7 debuts this week. (One Directioners not included. )hitseeker.: "XO" up another five. surfy: So is "Ain't it Fun". Lahey's Lucky Star: The Trees, meanwhile, go up six. josh: Gaga's Top 5. Mike's Top 40 For the Week Ending: February 1, 2014 TW | LW | WOC | Artist | Title | Peak | 40 | -- | 1 | Hunter Hayes | Invisible | 40 | 39 | -- | 1 | Beyonce featuring Jay-Z | Drunk in Love | 39 | 38 | -- | 1 | Foster The People | Coming of Age | 38 | 37 | -- | 1 | Kacey Musgraves | Follow Your Arrow | 37 | 36 | -- | 1 | Rudimental featuring Emeli Sande | Free | 36 | 35 | -- | 1 | Britney Spears | Alien | 35 | 34 | -- | 1 | Darling Parade | Crash & Burn | 34 | 33 | 37 | 3 | Karmin | I Want it All | 33 | 32 | 38 | 2 | Neon Trees | Sleeping With a Friend | 32 | 31 | 36 | 3 | Paramore | Ain't it Fun | 31 | 30 | 33 | 4 | The Saint Johns | Open Water | 30 | 29 | 20 | 18 | Zedd featuring Hayley Williams | Stay the Night | 12 | 28 | 29 | 5 | CHVRCHES | We Sink | 28 | 27 | 28 | 6 | Armin van Buuren featuring Cindy Alma | Don't Want to Fight Love Away | 27 | 26 | 19 | 18 | Martin Garrix | Animals | 6 | 25 | 30 | 4 | Beyonce | XO | 25 | 24 | 21 | 10 | Eminem featuring Rihanna | The Monster | 20 | 23 | 25 | 9 | Gavin DeGraw | Make a Move | 23 | 22 | 16 | 20 | Britney Spears | Work Bitch! | 1 (4) | 21 | 27 | 7 | Disclosure featuring Sam Smith | Latch | 21 | 20 | 26 | 6 | Duke Dumont featuring A.M.E. | Need U (100%) | 20 | 19 | 23 | 8 | Camryn | LoveSick | 19 | 18 | 22 | 7 | Chris Wallace | Keep Me Crazy | 18 | 17 | 17 | 12 | The 1975 | Chocolate | 17 | 16 | 18 | 12 | The Fray | Love Don't Die | 16 | 15 | 15 | 8 | Colbie Caillat | Hold On | 15 | 14 | 14 | 12 | Fitz & The Tantrums | Out of My League | 14 | 13 | 9 | 18 | John Newman | Love Me Again | 7 | 12 | 12 | 13 | Steve Grand | Stay | 12 | 11 | 11 | 13 | Avril Lavigne featuring Chad Kroeger | Let Me Go | 11 | 10 | 6 | 20 | Calvin Harris featuring Ayah Marar | Thinking About You | 1 (1) | 9 | 5 | 18 | Armin van Buuren featuring Trevor Guthrie | This is What it Feels Like | 1 (1) | 8 | 10 | 15 | Lana Del Rey | Young & Beautiful | 8 | 7 | 13 | 5 | Melissa Etheridge | Uprising of Love (Remix) | 7 | 6 | 8 | 18 | Avicii featuring Adam Lambert & Nile Rodgers | Lay Me Down | 6 | 5 | 7 | 15 | Lady Gaga featuring R. DROPPERS:Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Mary Lambert - Same Love (from 40) Mary Lambert - She Keeps Me Warm (from 39) Sara Bareilles - Brave (from 35) Bastille - Pompeii (from 34) Five For Fighting - What If (from 32) Avril Lavigne - Rock & Roll (from 31) Michaela May - When You Say (from 24) Fun fact: This is the third time in my chart's history where there have been 7 debuts on a given week. The first two times happened following multi-week chart freezes, making this set of 7 all the more noteworthy for that not being the case. In all three cases, however, Katy Perry wore the chart's crown. The first was 2/12/11, with "Firework" spending its 7th and final week at the top, and the second was 8/19/12, with "Wide Awake" hitting the top. And this week, of course, "Unconditionally" is up there for its second week. In the bridesmaid's position for a second time is Ellie Goulding, up to #2 with "Burn". Can she seize the crown this time on her own, or will she stop there once again? The ex-#1s falling out this week mean that two more ex-#1s now take their place as the oldest songs on the chart. (Who knew "Work Bitch!" would one week earn that distinction? ) After having runaway Biggest Mover honors for the past three weeks...straight, Melissa Etheridge now has to share that honor with three others this week as they all go up six. Meanwhile, the twilight appears to be fading on "Stay the Night", as it slides nine for the week's Biggest Drop and becomes the lowest-ranked bulletless song. Though it's at #29, it still stands a good chance of dropping out next week. TOUGH TIMES IN THE TEENS THIS WEEK: Five songs all holding position in that region. One of those, "Chocolate", spends a third week at its position. Oh, and you know how I mentioned that Ciara's previous best was taking "1, 2 Step" to #4 here? Well, "Overdose" tied that mark last week and this week bests that by advancing one more to #3. Now...let's take a closer look at those 7 debuts: "Invisible" - The second chart appearance for Hunter Hayes. "Wanted" was approaching the Top 10 last year when my chart hit shutdown. :( Suffice it to say, the latter shouldn't be happening this time, and its message should be all the more helpful for it. "Drunk in Love" - As I stated during church, I recently changed my mind about this one. We'll see how this fares with "XO" still going up. On that note...here's another fun fact: With this song's debut, not counting artists following up a song close to hitting #1 (and there's been a few of those in recent months), Beyonce becomes only the second artist to have two songs charting here and both going up. The first was Avril Lavigne with a pair of album tracks off of Let Go in 2003. "Coming of Age" - First appearance for Foster The People; I despised "Pumped Up Kicks" and never heard "Don't Stop (Color On the Walls)". "Follow Your Arrow" - Yes, I know I'm late to the party on this one. I'm giving it a run anyway. End of story. "Free" - Emeli Sande's fourth chart appearance in only a year's time; girl's got some consistency going here. And this definitely has Top 10 potential, just like her last feature "Beneath Your Beautiful" did. "Alien" - While Britney may still be deciding on a third single (or even whether or not to have one), I'm going to go with this as a follow-up to "Work Bitch!" Can't say this has instant #1 potential like that did, but it's her best shot for the time being. "Crash & Burn" - Perhaps an unlikely choice for the highest of the 7 debuts, but it's certainly earned that position this week, as it's got a sound that I'm really into. Phew......and I'm......spent. Until next week... :) -Mike

There's just one dropper this week, "Stay the Night" by Zedd featuring Hayley Williams (LW: 29). Replacing it is another sort of "staying the night" song...that lays it all out a little more clearly. ;) Oh and maybe you might've seen this coming, but there's a big jump to #1 this week... hitseeker.: Beyonce x2 and "Follow Your Arrow" all up, if not by a whole lot. @spiritanimal: Ciara's not #1, but she's hanging in there. surfy: Karmin up a little more. josh: Bad news, I'm afraid. :( Lahey's Lucky Star: Trees go up, and then some. :) Mike's Top 40 For the Week Ending: February 8, 2014 TW | LW | WOC | Artist | Title | Peak | 40 | -- | 1 | SoMo | Ride | 40 | 39 | 40 | 2 | Hunter Hayes | Invisible | 39 | 38 | 39 | 2 | Beyonce featuring Jay-Z | Drunk in Love | 38 | 37 | 38 | 2 | Foster The People | Coming of Age | 37 | 36 | 37 | 2 | Kacey Musgraves | Follow Your Arrow | 36 | 35 | 35 | 2 | Britney Spears | Alien | 35 | 34 | 26 | 19 | Martin Garrix | Animals | 6 | 33 | 36 | 2 | Rudimental featuring Emeli Sande | Free | 33 | 32 | 24 | 11 | Eminem featuring Rihanna | The Monster | 20 | 31 | 34 | 2 | Darling Parade | Crash & Burn | 31 | 30 | 22 | 21 | Britney Spears | Work Bitch! | 1 (4) | 29 | 33 | 4 | Karmin | I Want it All | 29 | 28 | 28 | 6 | CHVRCHES | We Sink | 28 | 27 | 31 | 4 | Paramore | Ain't it Fun | 27 | 26 | 23 | 10 | Gavin DeGraw | Make a Move | 23 | 25 | 30 | 5 | The Saint Johns | Open Water | 25 | 24 | 27 | 7 | Armin van Buuren featuring Cindy Alma | Don't Want to Fight Love Away | 24 | 23 | 32 | 3 | Neon Trees | Sleeping With a Friend | 23 | 22 | 25 | 5 | Beyonce | XO | 22 | 21 | 13 | 19 | John Newman | Love Me Again | 7 | 20 | 21 | 8 | Disclosure featuring Sam Smith | Latch | 20 | 19 | 19 | 9 | Camryn | LoveSick | 19 | 18 | 10 | 21 | Calvin Harris featuring Ayah Marar | Thinking About You | 1 (1) | 17 | 17 | 13 | The 1975 | Chocolate | 17 | 16 | 20 | 7 | Duke Dumont featuring A.M.E. | Need U (100%) | 16 | 15 | 9 | 19 | Armin van Buuren featuring Trevor Guthrie | This is What it Feels Like | 1 (1) | 14 | 18 | 8 | Chris Wallace | Keep Me Crazy | 14 | 13 | 16 | 13 | The Fray | Love Don't Die | 13 | 12 | 15 | 9 | Colbie Caillat | Hold On | 12 | 11 | 14 | 13 | Fitz & The Tantrums | Out of My League | 11 | 10 | 12 | 14 | Steve Grand | Stay | 10 | 9 | 11 | 14 | Avril Lavigne featuring Chad Kroeger | Let Me Go | 9 | 8 | 5 | 16 | Lady Gaga featuring R. Well, the last time we saw a large jump to #1 was when Adele did that with "Rumour Has It" (8-1). Now, the Top 40 chart era sees its first large jump to the top, courtesy of an uprising helmed by one Melissa Etheridge. Her speedy 6-week rise to the top will probably be the fastest in the Top 40 era for quite some time to come. Not a great deal of movement in the bottom reaches this week, but it really was to be expected. No worries - the coming weeks should easily be better. :) And though Melissa's leap to #1 was certainly impressive, it's Neon Trees who have the week's Biggest Move, up 9 notches to #23. PEAKING (or Peaked Last week): "Burn", "Do What U Want", "Chocolate", "Make a Move", "We Sink". Actually, though "Hold On" went up three this week, it looks to be peaking as well. "LoveSick", on the other hand, isn't peaking yet though it holds at #19. And...that should do it for this week's chart talk. Until next week... :) -Mike

● "Overdose" is in the Top 3 :) ● "Burn" and "Do What U Want" fall. ● "Let Me Go", "Need U (100%)", "Latch", "XO", "Sleeping With a Friend", "I Want It All", "Free", "Follow Your Arrow", "Coming of Age" and "Drunk in Love" climb. ● Sad to see that "Thinking About You", "Work Bitch" and "Animals" are done, but their longevities are really good though. ● "Alien" is there. OMFG!

Early posting this week. :) It's a week of Top 40 returns! Three songs drop out to make room for one re-entry, and two debuts that bring their respective artists back to my chart after many years away. surfy: SoMo and Karmin each up four. @spiritanimal: So is Britney (Alien). Lahey's Lucky Star: Neon Trees once again the week's Biggest Mover. hitseeker.: Kacey up six. Juan Carlos: Long list of songs ;) all up. DROPPERS:Martin Garrix - Animals (from 34) Eminem featuring Rihanna - The Monster (from 32) CHVRCHES - We Sink (from 28) Welcome back Mary Lambert, Kylie Minogue, and Keith Urban to my chart this week. Mary returns with "She Keeps Me Warm" getting a second wind. Keith's only other chart appearance before this was back in 2005, with "You'll Think of Me" crossing over to the mainstream formats (Pop, Hot AC, AC). Now, with "Cop Car", he logs his second chart appearance - and I'm not anticipating any crossing-over this time around. Kylie, on the other hand, hasn't appeared here since the Fever era. Yes, wayyyyyyyyyyy back in 2002-03. All three of her US singles chart, plus I charted "In Your Eyes" after, though that didn't fare too well. Now, eleven years later, she's back! Welcome "Into the Blue" to the Top 40 this week, at #39. Meanwhile, Melissa keeps the Uprising of Love going at #1 this week, but Katy holds on firmly with her Unconditional love at #2. But don't Overdo the love, or else you'll find yourself at #3. ;) Melissa's song is also one of six with Love in the title this week. As I mentioned above, the Trees once again have the week's Biggest Mover - up seven this week to #16. The week's Biggest Dropper is "Thinking About You", sliding 11 to #29. Definitely an improved week overall, with many songs going up three or more notches, with things only slowing down once you approach the Top 10. But even there, we'll be seeing some movement, with Lady Gaga, Colbie, and Christina going down, and Ellie not too far behind. Plus, though "Out of My League" reaches Top 10 territory this week, it's running out of steam, as are The Fray. And...that should do it for this week's chart talk. Until next week... :) -Mike

This isn't even her lowest-peaker. "Marry the Night" stopped at #6 - but besides that, "Judas" had a blink-and-you-missed-it run with two weeks at #20. Cici top 3! Work bitch was a former #1 wow! It's a toss-up between that and "Toxic" for her biggest hit on my chart, now. Work Bitch had more weeks on top, but despite only one week on top, Toxic had legs and finished top 10 for 2004. :)

DROPPERS:Britney Spears - Work Bitch! (from 38) Gavin DeGraw - Make a Move (from 34) Calvin Harris featuring Ayah Marar - Thinking About You (from 29) The Top 5's feeling a little gay these days...Melissa spends a third week on top, Adam's up another notch to #3, and Steve Grand leaps 8-4 this week. Only Katy stands between them and a complete Top 3 takeover, but she's still formidable right now. Chris Wallace reaches Top 10 territory, though I'm not sure how high he'll go. No, he's not peaking/about to peak right now, but I'm not sure I see him as a serious contender for the top. One who definitely is, though, is Neon Trees, missing the Top 10 by one notch this week. They and Foster The People tie for the week's Biggest Move, up 5 apiece. Add those together and you get the week's Biggest Drop, for ex-#1 "This is What it Feels Like". Yayyy math. :) "Don't Want to Fight Love Away" continues its steady climb into Top 20 territory, but I'm not sure how much higher this will go, either, as there's a host of hot tracks coming up from below. The Saint Johns, on the other hand, are probably peaking, as "Open Water" is starting to wear on me. Kind of a shame, since this is only its 7th week on the chart, but...it is what it is. :( And...that should do it for this week's chart talk. Until next week... :) -Mike

GAAAAH at "Sleeping With A Friend" missing the top 10 by a spot! At least they're biggest mover again! Paramore, Camryn and Disclosure still moving up! And then you debuted these two on the same week: 39 | -- | 1 | Tiesto | Red Lights | 39 | 38 | -- | 1 | John Newman | Losing Sleep | 38 |
No flaws detected.

@drag27: Two out of three reach Top 10 territory, the third isn't far off. Lahey's Lucky Star: Paramore and Camryn both up three. surfy: DIL up four. @spiritanimal: Kylie up two. DROPPERS:John Newman - Love Me Again (from 36) Armin van Buuren featuring Trevor Guthrie - This is What it Feels Like (from 34) DEBUT CORNER:Trying this out as a new commentary feature. Basically, it's me giving some insight on the week's debuts. "They Don't Know": So, I heard this song on a Rhythmic station one night last month. They hadn't said who it was, but I knew I was interested. So I tracked it down. After hearing the full song, it struck me as something I'm not sure I should be liking...but I do anyway. I can't help it, LOL. I don't know how high this will get - but it's got some potential for now. "Gasoline and Matches": Now, this is definitely a fun song to listen to. It's one of a few that I've listened to on repeat a couple of times already - I tend to avoid that with my current Top 40 and up-and-comers, but this is just That. Damn. Good. And frankly, I love that something this strong is bringing LeAnn and Rob to the Top 40 - as I've said in previous commentaries, Rob's certainly no stranger to these parts, but LeAnn's sole charting song here was "Life Goes On" back in 2002, which failed to reach the Top 10. Suffice it to say, this doesn't seem likely to suffer the same fate. :) Well, Katy grabs a second wind and snags a third week at the summit. Expect her to have to fend off Melissa once again next week if she wants to make it four. Neon Trees blast into the Top 10 up at #6, which could spell trouble for the three songs in front of them if any one of them wants to make it to the top. "Lay Me Down" in particular has been going for 22 weeks...only to fail now? We'll see... Karmin, actually, looked set to reach Top 20 territory this week, until both Rudimental/Emeli and Darling Parade suddenly came on strong. With Kacey, Foster The People, and SoMo right behind them, will next week produce the same result? And speaking of SoMo, while the six-notch moves for those two are impressive, he's the one who has the week's Biggest, leaping eight to #24 - "Ride" is definitely going to be a strong up-and-comer over the next few weeks ahead. Meanwhile, the chocolate appears to have melted on The 1975, as they take the week's Biggest Drop down twelve to chart bottom. And...that should do it for this week's chart talk. Until next week... :) -Mike
