Go Disclosure, Paramore & Karmin! And glad to see "Red Lights" still moving up!

A rather inauspicious start to the Top 40 this week, as two of the week's Biggest Droppers slide to #40 and #39 (not tied for that, but only one other song ties for 2nd biggest drop). On the other hand, EVERY song is on the move this week, so you know what that means... ;) surfy: SoMo up four, Karmin up three. @yonkab, @drag27: "XO" reaches Top 10 territory while "Drunk in Love" is up four. @spiritanimal: Kylie up four. hitseeker.: Tiesto up two. Lahey's Lucky Star: Paramore knocking on Top 10's door. Mike's Top 40 For the Week Ending: March 8, 2014 TW | LW | WOC | Artist | Title | Peak | 40 | 31 | 20 | Lady Gaga feat. R. DROPPERS:The 1975 - Chocolate (from 40) Colbie Caillat - Hold On (from 30) DEBUT CORNER:"Beautiful Girl": This is my first real exposure to anything new from Sarah McLachlan since the Afterglow era - from which, both the title track and "World on Fire" went Top 10 here. With a voice like she has, it's hard for her to really go wrong. While not an incredibly strong song, it's got some growing potential for her here. "Calling All Hearts": Another fun song that I definitely see hitting big come summer time. The unexpected collaboration with Robin Thicke and Jessie J is very neat, as well. Looks like Katy's second wind has proved to be short-lived, as she slides to #4, giving Melissa a fourth week on top. But look out! She's got two other gays breathing down her neck, and here come the fast-moving Neon Trees as well. Chris Wallace, meanwhile, though he moves up to #6 this week, that's probably as high as he'll get, as he's running out of steam. The same could be said for Avril Lavigne/Chad Kroeger, who peaked at #5 last week and slip two this week, Camryn, who peaked at #13 last week and also slips two this week, and "Don't Want to Fight Love Away", which despite going up three is likely to peak soon. While Christina has the week's Biggest Drop sliding twelve (27-39), three songs jump half that many: Gasoline and Matches (37-31), Losing Sleep (34-28), Crash & Burn (18-12). The last of those will probably be putting the brakes on, as the Top 10 looks to be quite tough over the next few weeks. The same is true for Neon Trees, though even with a potential delay are in no danger of being denied a trip to the summit. And...that should do it for this week's chart talk. Until next week... :) -Mike

Quick thoughts: I like "Calling All Hearts", I'll probably chart it eventually. Good to see Neon Trees in your top 5. Good moves for "XO" and "Drunk In Love". Nice to see you charting "Red Lights", I'm really loving it at the moment.

It's the Ides of March, people! And beware - the gays have taken over the top! Yes, I know, Melissa is gay too - but she's not the one who's #1 this week. So, who is - Adam, or Steve? (Funny how that works out. :kii: ) @spiritanimal: Britney and Kylie each up two. @yonkab: "XO" up again, "Drunk in Love" reaches Top 20 territory. @drag27: Tiesto up four (and into Top 30). surfy: SoMo up five. hitseeker.: So is Kacey. DROPPERS:Lady Gaga featuring R. Kelly - Do What U Want (from 40) Christina Aguilera - We Remain (from 39) DEBUT CORNER:"Rewind": OK, brief history lesson here. Growing up in the 90s, Country music was what was played pretty much exclusively around the house or in the car. This lasted until 1997. That year, it was about even between Country and Pop. But Country would be left behind the following year, and aside from cross-overs, I haven't really touched it since. So what the hell am I doing with four Country songs already in the Top 40 now and a fifth debuting this week? Well simply put, Country's been on a bit of a comeback. I'm not about to go exclusively back, but I'm no longer at a point where the door's pretty much closed, either. So where does "Rewind" come in? Well, let's look at the Country songs in the Top 40 right now. "Stay" is, of course, by a gay man singing about his interest in another man in a Country flavor. "Invisible", "Follow Your Arrow", and "Cop Car" were all performed at the Grammys, thus how I was exposed to them - and the first two, of course, have messages that sustain them even further anyway. Enter "Rewind" - which had none of the above to help push it in my favor. It's just, simply put, a really good song. Good enough for me! :) "Not a Bad Thing": It's hard to say whether this or "Mirrors" is my favorite release from The 20/20 Experience thus far. "Mirrors", of course, I didn't encounter until well after it'd peaked, due to that falling in my Pop blackout period. Odds are, that would've charted here otherwise. Expect this to be a big hit here as the weather gets warmer. :) Incidentally...Justin has but one Top 10 single to his credit on my chart - his first solo single, "Like I Love You", which made it to #7. Nothing else from Justified charted, and I was chart-less throughout the entire Future Sex/Love Sounds era (which began shortly after my first shutdown in 2006). So yes, due in large part to these circumstances, there's a good chance this song will become his biggest hit to date here. Phew...enough essays for one week. For the second week in a row, every song is on the move - putting Melissa out of #1, this time likely for good. Adam Lambert nets a second #1 song this week, but can he stay on top of Steve Grand next week? There's also Neon Trees waiting around the corner... The Trees may want to watch out, though, cause here come Disclosure with renewed energy and looking to strike. Expect these two to be duking it out for that top spot pretty soon here. Last week, three songs jumped six notches apiece, but this week, only one of those repeats that jump - making John Newman this week's sole Biggest Mover with "Losing Sleep". Catching the fast train to eternity this week are The Fray with the week's Biggest Drop, down 13 notches to #37. With some sizable moves this week, though, the teens are certainly looking hot at the moment. BTW I forgot to mention this last week...you know how I referred to "Crash & Burn" as sort of a heavier-sounding Paramore in its Pop thread? Well, isn't it just fitting to have that and Paramore now back-to-back in the Top 40? And...that should do it for this week's chart talk. Until next week... :) -Mike

Well, this seems like a good time to post this. :) Two gay male singers vie for the chart crown this week - Adam Lambert, and Steve Grand. Which one comes out on top? This week also sees two bands each score their second chart single on my chart after years away, and Ciara also scores an unexpected follow-up to "Overdose" as well. All this, and more - let's get this show on the road! @yonkab: Drunk in Love up 3, XO up 2. @drag27: Neon Trees one step closer to the summit. hitseeker.: Tiesto up 2. surfy: SoMo up 3, knocking on Top 10's door. Lahey's Lucky Star: Disclosure stay put this week. @spiritanimal: Kylie up 4. Mike's Top 40 For the Week Ending: March 22, 2014 TW | LW | WOC | Artist | Title | Peak | 40 | -- | 1 | One Direction | You and I | 40 | 39 | 32 | 25 | Ellie Goulding | Burn | 2 | 38 | -- | 1 | Hot Chelle Rae | Don't Say Goodnight | 38 | 37 | -- | 1 | Ciara featuring Future | Anytime | 37 | 36 | 34 | 5 | Icona Pop | Just Another Night | 34 | 35 | -- | 1 | Fall Out Boy | Young Volcanoes | 35 | 34 | 39 | 2 | Rascal Flatts | Rewind | 34 | 33 | 35 | 3 | Sarah McLachlan | Beautiful Girl | 33 | 32 | 38 | 2 | Justin Timberlake | Not a Bad Thing | 32 | 31 | 23 | 15 | Camryn | LoveSick | 31 | 30 | 33 | 3 | DJ Cassidy featuring Robin Thicke & Jessie J | Calling All Hearts | 30 | 29 | 21 | 22 | Lana Del Rey | Young & Beautiful | 5 | 28 | 30 | 5 | Tiesto | Red Lights | 28 | 27 | 29 | 6 | Keith Urban | Cop Car | 27 | 26 | 28 | 23 | Mary Lambert | She Keeps Me Warm | 20 | 25 | 19 | 13 | Armin van Buuren featuring Cindy Alma | Don't Want to Fight Love Away | 17 | 24 | 18 | 22 | Ciara | Overdose | 3 | 23 | 27 | 6 | Kylie Minogue | Into the Blue | 23 | 22 | 26 | 4 | LeAnn Rimes featuring Rob Thomas & Jeff Beck | Gasoline and Matches | 22 | 21 | 24 | 8 | Britney Spears | Alien | 21 | 20 | 12 | 20 | Avril Lavigne featuring Chad Kroeger | Let Me Go | 5 | 19 | 25 | 8 | Hunter Hayes | Invisible | 19 | 18 | 22 | 5 | John Newman | Losing Sleep | 18 | 17 | 20 | 8 | Beyonce featuring Jay-Z | Drunk in Love | 17 | 16 | 17 | 8 | Foster The People | Coming of Age | 16 | 15 | 16 | 10 | Karmin | I Want it All | 15 | 14 | 14 | 8 | Kacey Musgraves | Follow Your Arrow | 14 | 13 | 13 | 8 | Rudimental featuring Emeli Sande | Free | 13 | 12 | 15 | 7 | SoMo | Ride | 12 | 11 | 7 | 14 | Chris Wallace | Keep Me Crazy | 6 | 10 | 11 | 8 | Darling Parade | Crash & Burn | 10 | 9 | 6 | 22 | Katy Perry | Unconditionally | 1 (3) | 8 | 10 | 10 | Paramore | Ain't it Fun | 8 | 7 | 9 | 11 | Beyonce | XO | 7 | 6 | 8 | 13 | Duke Dumont featuring A.M.E. | Need U (100%) | 6 | 5 | 5 | 14 | Disclosure featuring Sam Smith | Latch | 5 | 4 | 3 | 12 | Melissa Etheridge | Uprising of Love (Remix) | 1 (4) | 3 | 4 | 9 | Neon Trees | Sleeping With a Friend | 3 | 2 | 1 | 25 | Avicii featuring Adam Lambert & Nile Rodgers | Lay Me Down | 1 (1) | 1 | 2 | 20 | Steve Grand | Stay | 1 (1) |
DROPPERS:The Saint Johns - Open Water (from 40) The Fray - Love Don't Die (from 37) Rico Love - They Don't Know (from 36) Fitz & The Tantrums - Out of My League (from 31) DEBUT CORNER:"You and I": This song debuts completely out of nowhere, the first to do so since three songs did that the week following the Grammys. I have a real weakness for emotional ballads that hit just the right spot, and this one does the trick. :'( "Unconditionally" did too, actually. Even with that, they've got big shoes to fill, since they took "What Makes You Beautiful" to #1 for 2 weeks here, and that also went on to be my sixth-biggest song of 2012. (Sound sort of familiar? Why yes, Neon Trees are in much the same boat...) It's got what it takes to hit, though - but it's going to have stiff competition here in the form of... "Anytime": ...a similar sentiment song debuting right alongside it, a few spots up. Totally wouldn't have expected Ciara to score a follow-up, to "Overdose" on my chart, an immediate follow-up that is, but there she is, with a song where she expresses her devotion to her man. And, he returns the favor in kind. And who can't appreciate that? I may be currently single, but even I love what she's doing here. Definitely seeing this as another chart hit for her here. "Don't Say Goodnight": This is only the second chart single for Hot Chelle Rae here; "Bleed" went to #14 in 2010. I'm not as strongly into this one, but it's still good, and easily better than anything they've put out inbetween. The fun setting and the melody combine pretty well here - we'll see how far it takes them. "Young Volcanoes": Another band making only their second chart appearance, though in Fall Out Boy's case their first was a #1 song, as they took "Dance, Dance" to the top here in 2006. I don't know that I see them doing that again with this, but I also don't see myself getting sick of this for awhile. It's a good fun upbeat rock song, and I especially love the drumbeat on it. Adam and Steve switch places this week, giving the Grand one #1 his first time out. But he may not have long to savor it either, as Neon Trees just won't stop advancing towards that top spot. Disclosure's holding in place this week is evidence of how tough the Top 10 is getting once again. Note how things start to slow down once you hit the Top 15, actually - as even the songs that are currently falling aren't going quickly and quietly (though Chris Wallace might start to speed up his fall). SoMo leapfrogs both Rudimental/Emeli and Kacey Musgraves this week, but neither of those two are even close to peaking yet - it's just more evidence of how tough things are right now. One who might be close to peaking soon, though, is Karmin. Though I still like "I Want it All", it's getting tougher to keep that one ahead of the songs coming up from below. Definitely running out of gas this week are Rico Love, who drops out, and Icona Pop, who drop two this week and will likely drop out next week. Hunter Hayes's six-notch jump ties Justin Timberlake for the week's Biggest Move. Add six and two and you get eight, the week's Biggest Drop, which three songs have. And...that should do it for this week's chart talk. Until next week... :) -Mike

● Good to see "Latch" in the Top 5 and "Need U (100%)" in the Top 10. ● "Follow Your Arrow", "I Want It All" and "Coming of Age" are in the Top 20. So good. ● "Alien" and "Into the Blue" keep jumping too. The former is close to be inside the Top 20. ● Good debut of "Young Volcanoes".

Last week, we had four debut songs. This week, we have another four debut songs. DROPPERS:Ellie Goulding - Burn (from 39) Icona Pop - Just Another Night (from 36) Camryn - LoveSick (from 31) Lana Del Rey - Young & Beautiful (from 29) DEBUT CORNER:I'll start by saying that it's going to be tough to say where all four of these will eventually end up, as the Top 40 as a whole is getting a lot tougher lately. I'll touch on that down below, but suffice it to say that all four of these have big hit potential here. "G.U.Y.": Second week in a row with a song coming right in at #40 out of nowhere; was a little too late to be considered for last week. "Do What U Want" sadly underperformed here, and I really want to think the same fate isn't in store for "G.U.Y." "Midnight": God, I love the chill vibe of this. I think this one will last a while for Coldplay. Their highmark to beat is "Paradise", which went all the way to #3 here. Depending on how future competition shakes out, this could very well get there or better. "Animal": This has sort of a rock-dance hybrid-sounding vibe that makes it so much fun to listen to. I'm going to love playing this during the summer. "Anywhere For You": A really strong song that's very easy to really get into. Between the melody and John's voice, it just hits. Well...here I'd been thinking that the recent streak of gay artists at the chart's summit was about to end here with "Stay" being sent packing after only one week. Thanks to Tyler Glenn of Neon Trees coming out just this week, that's no longer the case. "Sleeping With a Friend" took just six weeks to fly up to #6, and since then has waited patiently for the top of the chart ahead of it to sort itself out, all the while inching closer to the peak of the mountain. This week, the Trees take over for their second #1 song here. It looks to be headed for a long stay up there - but that won't come easy. Disclosure's "Latch" featuring Sam Smith is up to #3, and shows no signs of burning out anytime soon. There's also Duke Dumont, who reaches the Top 5 this week with "Need U (100%)". That's got a lot of fight in it left as well. Meanwhile, looking down from the top, you can see that things have definitely slowed down drastically. No song in the Top 20 goes up more than two notches this week. As this trend spreads downward, expect moves like Justin's eight-notch Biggest Jump to be less common in the coming weeks, until some more songs start falling. In particular, the 20s will probably be looking rather cutthroat over the next few weeks, as right now there's a mix of stronger songs that I'm more into, and less powerful ones that I'm not as into, and since they're all mixed around with varying strengths, who knows how things will shake out. And...that should do it for this week's chart talk. Until next week... :) -Mike

YAY for the G.U.Y. debut! I'm hoping that Drunk in Love makes it to your top 10.

I'm hoping that Drunk in Love makes it to your top 10. I want it to. It's really started to pick up for me the past couple weeks, and it'll probably pass FTP next week. I feel like I'm in a bit of a quandary with it though since I wasn't into it right away - it's now dying as a single, but I'm into it too much to just drop it, so I'm almost like, what do I do? :'( OTOH, I'm not as into "Partition", so it's not like I'd have to dump either DIL or XO for that right now (cause I'm iffy about putting three on at once).

Yes at Brit brit and Kylie, one step up is better than none. Nice to see G.U.Y debut even though as a song its not one of my faves that video tho! Your song #3 is really growing on me last week or so because of Sam Smith.

Bey needs to start moving faster. Not here for 1 or no position jumps. XO should have already hit #1, Drunk in Love should be ready to take over, and where's Partition???
Other than that great chart :)
