As reference, the ranked Top 100 (these 14 newbies aren't ranked): www.rollingstone.com/music/lists/100-greatest-artists-of-all-time-19691231And the 14 "New Immortals": www.rollingstone.com/music/lists/the-new-immortals-20130305Back in 2004, Rolling Stone assembled an expert panel of musicians, industry figures and critics to pick the 50 greatest artists of all time. We called these artists "The Immortals." A year later, our panelists expanded the roster to 100 all-time great artists, which you can read right here. But time stands still for no list, and when we look around us today we see a whole galaxy of other stars who belong in the Immortals conversation. Click through for 14 currently active (or relatively recently defunct) artists who we think will stand the test of time – the kind of acts whose names we wouldn't be surprised to see on a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ballot at some point down the road when they become eligible. Meet the New Immortals. Taylor Swift Kanye West Arcade Fire Pearl Jam Lady Gaga Beyoncé Wilco Rihanna Green Day The White Stripes The Roots The Strokes LCD Soundsystem Phish Will some implode because such-and-such was cited and such-and-such wasn't?

It was too soon to put GaGa on the list. No complaints besides that.

Oh my god you're right.. It should be her instead of GaGa. Maybe add GaGa in a few years... Other possible future additions: Kelly Clarkson Dixie Chicks Coldplay Mumford & Sons fun. Macklemore Justin Timberlake Adele Vampire Weekend Tori Amos Red Hot Chili Peppers Black Keys John Mayer Older Artists who should be added to the top 100: Judy Garland

Gaga hasn't proven longevity but I feel she's more deserving than Rihanna. She'll be remembered for a few hits but not for herself at all.
I do agree that Gaga was added too soon. Same with Rihanna and Taylor.

Time out, time out. Beyonce, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, and Gaga have been added to this list.
...But no Britney??
You know, I usually considered Rolling Stone the one outlet that gives Britney the critical recognition she deserves...

I would say Britney is more deserving of a place on a list like this than Rihanna whereas Beyonce, Taylor and GaGa have all contributed or have had enough of an impact in the few years they've been around to be listed.

Glad to see Bey on the list :)
Strange to see Rihanna and Gagz on it, and no Britney. But Bey made it so no complaints.

I think that list is pretty cool, what confuses me is why the likes of 'the strokes' are there and not the red hot chili peppers, as the chili peppers in my opinion have proven themselves more than the strokes?? same with the likes of Lady Gaga and Rhianna

B=MAC, ABBA, Fleetwood Mac, and to a lesser extent, Dolly Parton, are ones out of that lot whose music has enjoyed a decent level of acclaim and such. And, Parton is in the Country Music Hall of Fame (which was established 25 years prior to the Rock Hall).
I'm not sure I agree with citing Rihanna as a "New Immortal"- certainly her singles success has been staggering, but artistically and other things, less so. She and Queen B/ haven't had a big criticalhit album as of yet, ether, whereas some of the other "new Immortals" (The Strokes, LCD Soundsystem, Arcade Fire, etc.) have.

As much oif a "mess" as RS may be, it's still considered THE source of music criticism among music outlets, I suppose- the U.S. version of Q. Yah, like anything, at times it's not perfect, but, for the most part, it's been decent in terms of these kinds of things. When you're talking about newer acts, though, especially, there's going to be some pot-stirring.
I wouldn't have labeled them "New Immortals," though.

To not recognize MARIAH CAREY its just plain ridiculous.......she's a true artist. With many classics under her belt and a 20+ yr career. Please.

^There too are other female acts who had even longer careers and were pretty successful (not that that's a major factor in this stuff). Donna Summer. Olivia Newton-John. Pat Benatar. And more.

You said it, pretty successful. Mariah has been mega successful, one of the highest selling female artist of all-time, broken records left and right, unparalleled artistry...amazing singer, songwriter, producer. The so called "acclaimed" hasn't been as strong as other because, lets face it, Mariah is not the "controversial" type of artist who usual garner the huge acclaim by critics. Just cause a lot of her material has been a bout love or being heart broken doesn't make her any less talented. She has given a lot to the music industry for many years now.

Do I need to say it? OK fine...I will
This is Rolling Stone, a Rock N Roll magazine. It's various lists are created by fans of rock n' roll (I assume the writers and readers of the magazine are also rock fans)
The fact that they didn't count up and include everyones favrorite pop divas should not be surprising.
The fact that they included any at all somewhat surprises me.
These lists are opinions only and should not be taken too seriously

@2m
Taylor Swift Kanye West Lady Gaga Beyoncé Rihanna
I dont see rock n' roll there...as well as people already in the original list...Madonna, Aretha..etc.
Anyway I'm just commenting, that's all.

My point is fans of rock will not be diva conscious. It will not be a priority to include all female pop stars who ever lived Wilco, Arcade Fire, The Strokes, etc. will get more attention and focus For example, you ask a rock fan what their 10 favorite acts are, it will probably be 8 rock acts and 2 pop acts. If you ask someone here to list their 10 faves, you will likely see the reverse.

I believe we've found ourselves in an era where a certain group of Pop stars find themselves with fans across the board, reminiscent of the late 80's and early 90's when someone like Janet Jackson could score a top 10 single on the Rock charts while simultaneously dominating the Pop charts.
That didn't happen in the late 90's and early 00's, hence why Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera are not included. That's my best guess, anyway.

I understand that but they should atleast do some research... Look at it this way; if they did all the research they had to and had to decide whether Mariah Carey or, say, Led Zeppelin (who I think are already there, but I think it's a reasonable example) was going to be listed, which one do you think they would pick? Or maybe that's not a good example? Regardless, I've never been able to work out what criteria RS uses for these lists. Have you seen either of their Top 100 Guitarists rankings? They seem incapable of deciding whether they're going for technical facility, influence or plain old populism.

I don't know why Gaga is deserving but not Rihanna Seriously though. They both deserve to be on the list. Rihanna has had as many bonafide Top 10 hits as any of the legends and in some cases more and she shows no signs of letting up at all currently. She's not even 30 years old yet.
