Because people outside her fanbase liked it? Yes because the general public obviously flocked out to buy a Demi Lovato song within a couple hours of its release... She's had one hit. "Skyscraper" she had nothing in the eyes of the public. Her fanbase is what gets her songs so high so quickly. Obviously. If that was true then both of Rih's (who objectively has a bigger fanbase than Demi) last 2 lead singles would go #1 hours after their release but even them needed some time to eventually reach #1 on the digital chart which means that people actually liked enough what they heard during the 30 second snippets of Demi's songs to go buy them instantly. I could be wrong though.

I think it's a bit obtuse to think of this in terms of peaks. Skyscraper and Heart Attack each sold ~170k their first week. Is that really too far off from 110-120k for an entire album?

Demi's fanbase isn't huge . All three of her albums though have sold between 400k and 600k. Her fanbase is strong just not huge (yet) her albums have all opened well

WOW www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/chart-alert/1562825/daft-punks-random-album-headed-for-big-sales-week-aims-forDaft Punk's 'Random' Album Headed For Big Sales Week, Aims For First No. 1 By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | May 17, 2013 Daft Punk's new album, Random Access Memories, is heading for a big sales week and the act's first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. Industry sources suggest the album, due out on May 21, may sell between 250,000 and 300,000 copies in its first week. That whopping figure is more than twice the total sales of its last studio album, 2005's Human After All, to date (125,000 according to Nielsen SoundScan). Pre-orders for the album have been strong, sources say, with volume picking up noticeably after the iTunes Store began streaming the album on Monday, May 13. Random should easily earn the best sales week for a dance/electronic album in more than a year. The last dance set to move more than 250,000 in a week was Madonna's MDNA, when it sold 359,000 in its first week of release in March of 2012. A start of at least 250,000 for Random would be three times larger than Daft Punk's previous best sales week. Presently, the duo's highest one-week sum was logged in December 2010, when its TRON: Legacy soundtrack debuted with 71,000 at No. 10. TRON marked the first top 10 for Daft Punk, ultimately peaking at No. 4 in January of 2011. It has so far sold 585,000.

www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/1562845/george-strait-demi-lovatos-new-albums-bound-for-top-three-on-billboard-200George Strait, Demi Lovato's New Albums Bound for Top Three on Billboard 200 By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | May 17, 2013 Country icon George Strait is heading for a No. 2 debut on the Billboard 200 chart next week with his new album, "Love Is Everything." Meanwhile, Demi Lovato's fourth studio effort, "Demi," is aiming for a No. 3 bow. According to industry sources, the albums are projected to sell about 120,000 and 110,000, respectively, by the end of the tracking week on May 19. Vampire Weekend’s “Modern Vampires of the City” will likely own the No. 1 position next week with perhaps 130,000 copies sold. The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of May 22. If Vampire Weekend sells that much of its new set, it will mark the best sales week for the band. The group’s previous high-water mark was logged when its last studio album, 2010's "Contra," started at No. 1 with 124,000 sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. "Modern Vampires" will mark the second chart-topper for the rock act. As for Strait, his new album should debut stronger than his last studio set, 2011's "Here for a Good Time." That effort entered at No. 3 with 91,000. The veteran performer will likely lock up his 18th top 10 album on the Billboard 200 next week with "Love Is Everything." This past week, the album's current single, "Give It All We Got Tonight," became the 60-year old's 86th top 10 hit on the Hot Country Songs chart. He continues to have the second-most Country Songs top 10s in history, as only Eddy Arnold, with 92, has more. Switching gears to Lovato, her new "Demi" set may sell around 110,000 -- possibly her best sales week yet. She'll likely settle for a No. 3 start behind Vampire Weekend and George Strait, however. Lovato's last album, 2011's "Unbroken," started at No. 4 with 96,000. She previously opened at No. 1 with her sophomore set, "Here We Go Again," in 2009 (108,000 in its debut). Her first album, 2008's "Don't Forget," debuted and peaked at No. 2 off an 89,000 launch. After those three new albums, the next-highest new entry next week looks to be Amy Grant's new "How Mercy Looks From Here." The set may shift around 30,000 copies and start somewhere in the top 15. On SoundScan's Building chart (below), Lovato is No. 1 while Vampire Weekend is No. 2. The Building tally is a precursor to the final Billboard 200 ranking, reflecting the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week as reported by six major merchants. While it appears that Lovato -- at least by the Building Chart's ranking -- as the lead over Vampire Weekend, that will change over the weekend and on the official Billboard 200 chart next week. As for the rest of the Building chart's top 10: Pistol Annies and "Now 46" are Nos. 3 and 4, respectively, while Michael Buble's "To Be Loved" sits at No. 5. Justin Timberlake's "The 20/20 Experience" is No. 6, Kenny Chesney's "Life On a Rock" is No. 7 and Stewart is No. 8. Blake Shelton's "Based On a True Story" is No. 9 and the new "The Music of Nashville, Vol. 2" (the second soundtrack to the TV series "Nashville") is No. 10. NIELSEN SOUNDSCAN BUILDING CHART Rank LW BB 200 Artist Title 1 NEW Demi Lovato "Demi" 2 NEW Vampire Weekend "Modern Vampires of the City" 3 NEW George Strait "Love Is Everything" 4 2 Soundtrack "The Great Gatsby" 5 1 Lady Antebellum "Golden" 6 3 Various Artists "Now 46" 7 6 Justin Timberlake "The 20/20 Experience" 8 5 Michael Buble "To Be Loved" 9 4 Pistol Annies "Annie Up" 10 8 Kenny Chesney "Life On a Rock" The Building Chart reflects the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week (which ends Sunday) as reported by six major merchants: iTunes, Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Starbucks, Target and Anderson Merchandisers. Billboard estimates that they make up about 85% of all U.S. album sales.

I really hope Demi can at pull ahead of George. She won't be able to outdo Vampire Weekend, but that's okay.

Demi's #1 on Billboard's building chart so I don't think a #1 for her is totally out of the question.

Wow. VW's second #1 album. Who knew they'd have such staying power, right? They'll be joining Arcade Fire and Marilyn Manson as the only artists with two number-one albums and zero appearances on the Hot 100. Edit: My 5,000th post!

I agree - it is not set in stone.
*Vampire Weekend (XL) 125-135k *George Strait (MCA Nashville) 115-120k *Demi Lovato (Hollywood) 110-115k
The last reported numbers suggest that a big burst over the weekend by one of the three front runners could put them at #1

HITS says VW will be #1, but still says it's a 3 way race. lol www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/rumormill.cgi THREE-WAY RACE: Look for XL's Vampire Weekend to do its best first week ever to edge out MCA Nashville's George Strait and Hollywood's Demi Lovato for the top spot on tomorrow's HITS Album Sales chart, which begins its countdown this morning here as soon as our crack retail staff gets out of bed. All three will be in six figures, with the winner boasting up to 135k. Stay tuned as the results come in. (5/20a)

Amy Grant has to be the biggest surprise here - I had no idea until I read last week that she had a chance at Top 15. Will she hold on Billboard for Top 10?

^And the strong country radio airplay for his single. It should go to #1 next week. 111k is a little disappointing for Demi. Ouch at Eve. I wouldn't have even realized Eve was there if you hadn't mentioned it 111k isn't disappointing; Hits projected 105-115k (which they later tightened to 110-115k) and Billboard predicted ~110k so it's not like she fell short of anything. She was right on target, and consistent with the opening weeks of her past two albums. I hope she gets three hits from this one, I just finished listening to it and it's a pretty solid pop album.
