The article references "industry forecasters." They also said Daft Punk would debut with 300-350k. These forecasts are based on pre-orders with iTunes, Amazon, etc... I'm inclined to believe them. Like weather forecasters sometimes they predict clear and sunny and what really happens is rain

More in line with what I expected for Kanye than the initial 500k predictions (still more than I expected...though hype got pretty big). I could see sales crumbling without a single so hopefully they put something out there. It'll be interesting to see Jay-Z's sales without a single as well (he isn't releasing one, correct?).
Great numbers for J Cole, even bigger than the last album. Meh for Mac Miller

Looks like the leak hurt Kanye a bit. Yet it had the opposite effect on Cole considering his album leaks 2 weeks prior.

Wow, only 400k for Kanye? That's a serious drop. I mean, 400k is a good number but didn't Kanye's last album debut with more?

Great numbers for both Kanye and Cole. Kelly could've done better, like 80+k

I'm not shocked by 'Ye's numbers. There was no single. There was an odd promotion campaign. I don't think the numbers are bad. MBDTF debuted with 496k with Black Friday, promo, and hits.

I'm shedding a tear for Cole right now. So proud to see an increase after all of the underwhelming predictions. His fanbase has only grown more since his first album. So happy for the New School of Hip-hop.

I'd be curious to know how much the leak hurt Kanye. I know I had every intention of buying it but then I wanted to get the scoop so I downloaded it first and realized I probably wouldn't make it a regular listen so it might not be worth buying. If I see it on vinyl I may change my mind.

Ever since Vol. 3, Jay's album openings have ranged from 400k to 680k (the latter being an aberration, it was the 'comeback' hype for Kingdom Come). 420-480k is what he often does, though. That includes his last two solo albums and WTT. Jay's profile is large but I don't think it's that much larger than what it has been for the past few years (almost certainly no higher than it was during WTT, and that was an extremely hyped collaboration with an equally high-profile rapper). It would help if an ESOM sized hit was the lead single instead of second or third, but with such a long and consistent career already, a 1m opening really does not seem to be in the cards for him. I think he should be content with that record streak of #1 albums. I agree, Jay has nothing to shake his head about. But my point is he want's the million selling week and will do anything to get it.

i'm actually a little pissed right now - i just lost an extra point in the Pulse fantasy game because Cole just had to show the boy's a man like Wanya. Jokes, of course...very nice numbers for him. And he's still just on the first single...I think he could eventually hit platinum. I'd be curious to know how much the leak hurt Kanye. I know I had every intention of buying it but then I wanted to get the scoop so I downloaded it first and realized I probably wouldn't make it a regular listen so it might not be worth buying. If I see it on vinyl I may change my mind. J. Cole's album leaked three weeks early and his projections increased by over 100k. Kanye leaked only a few days earlier than the release and his projection decreased by over 100k. That could be attributable to the leaking (in Born Sinner's case positive word of mouth made people want to buy it, while the mixed feelings toward Yeezus made some casual fans a bit less excited about it), but it could also just mean the forecasters were off in their projections. It wouldn't be the first time, 2012 was a constant stream of disappointment with almost every opening week.

Perhaps but at the same time, I think what made Kanye's album so appealing to a lot of people and what contributed to the hype was that there were no singles and no previews available of any of the tracks. So other than his few performances, the album was pretty much a question mark and the plan was that most people's first interaction with the album was to be when they purchased it.
I might change my mind about not buying it though. I just listened to Blood On The Leaves and the production really captures me. Maybe I was too hasty in my review of the album and just needed another listen or two. We shall see!

The Throne era might have given Kanye a good boost. Without it, he could've struggled to reach 300k with such a weird promotion campaign and no hits.

The numbers for Kanye West are sensational. The fact he is able to draw roughly 400,000 people to buy an album with almost no "official" promotion and not even a single song on radio is incredible.
J. Cole's numbers are INSANE. I had him pegged for around 200k on the high end. Did not think he would go THAT high. I didn't really like the album though. Don't see what is so popular about him. His singles have been okay, but a lot of the reasons I've enjoyed them where due to the special features he had -- Miguel, Missy Elliott, etc. (and now TLC).

YOUR TOP 15: For only the second time this year, a rap album scores the crown as Kanye West debuts at #1. The only other hip-hop release to hit #1 in 2013 was A$AP Rocky, which debuted on top the week ending 1/20 with 139k. In fact, after the chart's brief flirtation with hard rock in the form of Queens of the Stone Age and the reunited Black Sabbath, next week will see rap albums occupy the Top 3 spots on the album chart. Here are this week's key debuts:
* Kanye West (Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam/IDJ) 360-385k * J. Cole (Roc Nation/Columbia) 280-305k * Mac Miller (Rostrum) 95-105k *Kelly Rowland (Republic) 60-65k Black Sabbath (Republic) 55-60k Daft Punk (Columbia) 40-45k Justin Timberlake (RCA) 35-40k Florida Georgia Line (Republic Nashville) 30-35k Hunter Hayes (Atlantic) 30-35k Darius Rucker (Capitol Nashville) 25-28k Imagine Dragons (Kidinakorner/Interscope) 24-27k *Sigur Ros (XL) 24-27k Bruno Mars (Atlantic) 21-24k Blake Shelton (Warner Bros. Nashville) 21-24k Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (Macklemore) 19-22k *Falling In Reverse (Epitaph) 19-22k
*Debuts
In other industry news, a record-label intern was rewarded for excellent work today, receiving an extra dollop of gruel. (6/20p)

Poor Kanye. It keeps getting worse. lol come on, his number is in no way bad. what poor is that 500k prediction which really had no basis whatsoever cos there weren't even any presale.

I was skeptical of 500k when they predicted it. For being such an acclaimed album that did have hit singles, MBDTF didn't shift on par with what one would perhaps expect and then there's this, which had no pre-release singles. In no way is over 350k opening in any musical climate a flop. Even in the times people really bought albums, any week with over 200k was great.
