But she doesn't have an R&B hit really as big as "Motivation" like that album did. Although Brandy's "Two Eleven" only sold 65K after an enduring urban #1 with "Put It Down".

I hope Kelly is in the 85-90k range. I think this album is going to do better in the long term as well. Especially with "Dirty Laundry" still rising so well and the video yet to be released.

A bit of a premature question for chart experts. Hasn't Billboard always limited the amount of units purchased by a sole individual when it comes to what can count towards an album's chart position?
Samsung just bought 1 million copies of Jay-Z's album at 5 bucks apiece, way above the Billboard threshold, and plan on giving them away for free. Is there some chance that Billboard would reconsider the album's debut week numbers?
The issue here isn't what Samsung will be doing with the purchased albums, though it is important to note that they are not reselling, but the fact that is was a one time bulk purchase. Is there some sort of precedence? I can't imagine they would allow bulk purchases from a "sole" entity to impact the charts like that.

^Can't imagine those would count toward the chart. :)
If there looks to be some sort of odd anamoly, they would look into it and likely not count those purchases.

Not a stan of Jay-Z, but just because he made a savvy business move to sell his album, doesn't mean they shouldn't count. Although it does, in his bank account, which is all that matters.

I personally don't think they should count. Though it depends on the angle of Billboard's chart reporting. Does Billboard measure consumer sales? Samsung isn't a consumer. And even though Samsung isn't reselling the album as is, I assume it can't be attained by just anyone. So it comes with some sort of a previous purchase. So it's "free" but it's not free. I can't just go and get one if I wanted to unless I had a Samsung phone. If the Samsung deal gets counted, then they should also count the retailers who buy the albums too - even if those get sold to retailers. By the time the copies reach store shelves, the label has already received its money.

Only those purchased at a store count, which in this case would be the redeemed/downloaded ones from the app.

I don't think they should count. To me, this is the same as a record store purchasing a million copies for sale and giving them away for free. Yes, it's almost certain that all million copies will be redeemed (whereas it is less likely that one store will give away 1 million CDs) but it's the same concept. IMO, sales counted toward the Billboard 200/Soundscan/etc. should be consumer purchases, not bulk-purchases by the company that is more-or-less sponsoring the album.

If they count sales like these prepare for Gaga having a 2.5 million opening week or something when she bundles the album with some phone or Ipod

If they count sales like these prepare for Gaga having a 2.5 million opening week or something when she bundles the album with some phone or Ipod If I'm not mistaken they already have a rule in place that doesn't count albums which are bundled with sales promotions - like a "buy a new phone today and get a Lady Gaga album free!" type thing (which I think I recall Gaga doing but am not sure). I think they do count albums if the promotion is "buy a new phone today and get a Lady Gaga album for only $3.99!" so there is a little loophole there. I'm with Max in that Jay-Z/Samsung is more similar to the former - in order to get in on the deal you not only have to own a certain type of phone or tablet but you also have to have a certain app, and the album is free to whoever does. It's not perfectly analogous because Samsung is treating the album as a standard app instead of making it a straightforward sales promotion for their products, but for all intents and purposes that's how it functions. it not that, it's certainly them trying to promote their app to their current consumers. Normally I'd say the compromise is to only count the number of downloads that actually occur but lbr, at least 85% of them will, and I'm sure he'll sell enough the 'regular' way to hit the landmark 1m in a week.

I don't think they should be counted.
If I were to buy, say 50 copies of an album from one store, those sales wouldn't be counted on the chart. So buying so many albums in such bulk and then giving them away shouldn't count towards his first week. However, I think they should count to his shipped total for certifications.

They won't be counted. Soundscan doesnt count bulk sales. Oh it is counted, but the data has historically not been used towards what they publish for Billboard chart purposes. It's more of a Billboard rule than anything and according to that article, JayZ's team is in negotiations with Billboard about that rule. The possibility exists that Billboard could change its rules.....but I doubt it. Allowing one time large bulk purchases to count will open the flood gates for manipulation. What's to stop artists themselves from buying their own records through shadow companies or "rub my back and I'll rub yours" sponsorship deals? The good news is that the 1MM is a worldwide giveaway. God knows how much of that would impact the US market.

I guess my point is, Jay Z doesn't need gimmicks to sell a million, his whining on twitter and even negotiating with billboard is immature. He has never had a million selling week and is trying to manipulate it so he get's one.

Billboard is a shitty company so theyll probably adjust their rules just enough and then close the loop hole later to inflate JayZs numbers just to get their traffic up on their site. The fact that they are in negotiations should tell you a rules change is coming down the pipeline. Billboard should've immediately said no publicly and very clearly and refused to negotiate on this matter.

Jay-Z's had some fantastic debuts, but he's never approached a 1m opening, so, why would he now? (as that Samsung thing probably won't impact the charts). I'm working on getting a definitive answer, though, on the Samsung promo.

I think Jay is capable of having a huge opening at this point in his career. His profile is bigger now than ever so all he really needs is hype and a great hit first single.

Ever since Vol. 3, Jay's album openings have ranged from 400k to 680k (the latter being an aberration, it was the 'comeback' hype for Kingdom Come). 420-480k is what he often does, though. That includes his last two solo albums and WTT. Jay's profile is large but I don't think it's that much larger than what it has been for the past few years (almost certainly no higher than it was during WTT, and that was an extremely hyped collaboration with an equally high-profile rapper). It would help if an ESOM sized hit was the lead single instead of second or third, but with such a long and consistent career already, a 1m opening really does not seem to be in the cards for him.
I think he should be content with that record streak of #1 albums.

YOUR ONE-DAYS: The top of next week's chart will look a little better than in recent weeks, with Kanye West and J. Cole scoring the #2 and #4 debuts of the year. Justin Timberlake (968k) remains untouched for the biggest first week thus far in 2013. Daft Punk (339k) will move into the third spot following next week's chart. Here are this week's key debuts:
Kanye West (Roc-a-Fella/Def Jam/IDJ) 375-400k J. Cole (Roc Nation/Columbia) 290-315k Mac Miller (Rostrum) 95-105k Kelly Rowland (Republic) 60-65k Hunter Hayes (Atlantic) 30-35k Falling In Reverse (Epitaph) 20-25k Empire of the Sun (Capitol) 15-18k Sigur Ros (XL) 20-25k Hanson (Three Car Garage) 14-17k
These results were tabulated by our sales department but formatted by our new intern, who's now resting on a little bed made of newspapers. Adorable! (6/19p)

Wow, good numbers for Empire Of The Sun & Sigur Ros.
I wish Kelly was selling more, but those are good numbers as she has no massive R&B hit now.
