Wait, Lady Antebellum debuted with 12,000 albums? Kellie Pickler even debuted with more? Is this real life? It was a deluxe edition of their last CD. Oh okay

What's crazy is if anyone months ago stated that Gaga would debut with this kind of number you would have been raked over the coals.

Disappointing for Lady GaGa. Now I wonder how Britney's album will sell? No one from the female pop stars this year really opened spectacularly
I hope Kelly's Christmas album will continue to sell good over the holidays

My opinion on the Lady Gaga sales when taking into account others like Katy and Miley.
The hard facts, ARTPOP opened with less that both Prism and Bangerz. Considering what BTW opened with, it's a HUGE drop and I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a disappointment. I definitely expected better, especially considering Gaga has usually been a dependable force when it comes to album sales, compared to Katy whose albums haven't been huge sellers compared to the success of her singles.
But then, when you look at the success of Katy's singles vs. Gaga's singles (and vs. Miley's singles) so far, Gaga did decently. Roar was huge. As has been mentioned, Miley had two significant singles prior to her album's release while Gaga had Applause plus a few promo singles. Also consider that the release of Prism came at a time when Katy was/is a media darling. Roar was criticized for its comparisons to Brave yet it still went on to be a big hit and the "controversy" hardly held any weight. Katy is arguably at a career peak. I'm absolutely not trying to diminish her success but am just trying to put it in perspective. Compare Katy's favourability as a pop star to Gaga's current backlash, which is bigger than it was during the BTW era. The only real positives I've read about Gaga so far this era (outside of her fans) have been the overwhelmingly positive response to her SNL gig. Other than that, she's been fighting an uphill battle. So while 260k is still lower than I'd have ever predicted and expected, at the same time, it definitely makes sense and comparing her to the top two female pop singers of the year (Katy and Miley), it's still a rather respectable number.
I'm unsure if the album will have the legs that I expect Bangerz to have (and to a lesser extent, Prism) so I don't expect ARTPOP to outsell either of them in the long run but to put things in perspective again, it'll be interesting to see how it does in relation to the success of its singles compared to either of those albums, as well as in relation to BTW. ARTPOP doesn't have the pop-radio hits that either of those albums have so after Gypsy and whatever the other single happens to be, Gaga will be selling mostly on her name. I wish we had a good centralized location that had approximate sales numbers per week for some of the recent big releases, just to see how they stack up week-to-week.
So in conclusion, I think the opening week of ARTPOP's sales are definitely disappointing but looking at it in a larger context, it's not as bad as some might make it out to be considering what she's working against.

Gaga's album had loads of promo in the months leading up to the album release, though, via TV, radio, online, etc. So while "Applause" wasn't the huge hit that the other ladies' songs were, it's not like she sat idly by and just tossed the album out there.
The numbers aren't career-ending or catastrophic- but, they are well below what some probably were expecting and hoping for. It just goes to show that no one is immune to dramatic commercial drop-offs- which most of us knew, but some diehard fans probably had some trouble believing such a thing was possible for Mother Monster.

Many would disagree with you, stating she has had lack of promo in the US. She's currently performing an hour of songs om the CW.

She did enough promo. Spears is the only one with that excuse.

As someone who only hears about these ladies casually, I'd say Miley had the biggest promo. It started with the beginning of the year when I heard she was going to be on the cover of Maxim as the sexiest woman. She had huge amount of press about that as people were still thinking of her as little Miley. Then she debuted her short haircut which got the buzz and then she was constantly in the news over her boyfriend. And of course, she continued to do as many outrageous things as possible to get press. She also put out two hit songs before her album dropped. I think if anyone was going to sell a lot it would have been her so she seemed to underperform.
Katy Perry had some press about her ex and a really big single in Roar. She seemed to do just the right amount of promo including taking over all those clear channel stations where she was dj for a day. Her sales seem to meet expectation plus she's continuing to sell well.
Lady Gaga just has had a ton of negative press with the whole hip surgery thing where some were saying she was really getting plastic surgery and people calling her out like Perez Hilton and Elton John who said he hadn't heard from her even though she's his kid's godmother. There was implications that she was in trouble with drugs. For some reason she also seems to be a lot less popular with gay people as well and they used to be her biggest supporter. And in general, a lot of people acted like they were tired of her act & theatrics. But applause was a strong radio song even though it never sold as well as Roar or Wrecking Ball. That was probably the hint that the album would sell below expectation as well. But she did generate a lot of good will from that SNL appearance so she may rebound from this.

If those numbers for Gaga are correct that's great after all the drama.

chartfreak- it's not just about album-release week. I don't want to post that rundown of everything she's done over the last several months, but it's a LONG list. Plus, with big-act names, promo only does so much. The awareness of the album release was huge, anyhow, and that just didn't translate into massive interest. I just noticed Ellen DeGeneres has an album in the top 40- though I don't think she'll be credited with it.
