This is less than TTAL's Pink whose entire career has not had as much promo as one Gaga era. Back to the lab Gaga.

Regardless of whether it's No. 1, the figure- if it ends up in the 250K-275K range- no doubt will be viewed as a letdown.

Wow, crazy to see her career kind of peter off. Is it female pop star fatigue? None of them seem to be moving many albums at this point. 230-290k seems to be the new plateau for female pop stars, with only Beyonce rising above it recently (which I think we can attribute to her strong urban following and her multi-format appeal). Nicki (I don't think you could call Roman Reloaded anything other than a pop album), Katy, Miley, Rihanna, Britney and now Gaga have all opened in that mid 200s range with their last efforts. 4 had a massive promotional push. Columbia spent millions promoting and marketing the album yet if failed to gain momentum. And now she can't release an album. She's hardly at an advantage or above the rest.

Not to beat a dead horse, but MDNA did have those concert ticket promo thingies. Saving for the scam... Madonna wouldve debuted at #2 with fewer than 200k sold.

I think this is just the new sales reality. If you're a male artist like Justin or Eminem who hasn't released a record for a while then maybe you get those big sales. I expect Britney to flop too.

See...I was expecting something along these lines because of "Applause"'s modest first week, but with everyone else predicting much higher numbers I thought maybe Gaga was just more of an album seller. Most of her fans have to be underwhelmed.

But weren't little monsters bashing Prism's sales in that HITS thread back then? lol, I love when things backfire for annoying people whether it's real life or online. How can Billboard be so sure Artplop is debuting at #1? :o is Eminem going to drop that much?

Those figures are shocking. And with so much exposure too... I now fret for Britney's first week sales too.

Indeed, chartfreak- based on her past first-week sales of her studio albums from 1998-2008, the album would have debuted with, at the least 225K-250K. Still likely would have ended where it did, though, and while a disappointing overall number, doesn't detract from the debut.
But, back to the topic at hand- Artpop has had a heap of promotion and build-up. She and the album sure can't be faulted for lack of awareness. The Associated Press ran an article on the oversaturation.

275k for Gaga is pretty awful; there's really no way to spin it. I'm sure her label is incredibly disappointed. Even considering how the Born This Way era basically sputtered to a close, Gaga is still thought to be one of the biggest, most successful pop stars in the world, and numbers below what Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry pulled with their latest albums has got to sting. On that note, it is kind of funny (and ironic) that Gaga's stans like to poke fun at Katy for not being able to sell albums, yet ARTPOP is on track to sell less than Prism did its first week out. Ouch.

With all the disappointing numbers (to varying degrees) of Gaga, Katy, Miley, etc., people shouldn't be shocked at Britney opening less than 200k and Mariah opening less than 100k with their next efforts, but I'm sure they will be if it happens.

I'm honestly in a state of shock right now. Like, how do you go from a million selling album first week to barely pushing 250k? The Monsters have to be in a fucking frenzy right now. I know I would be if I were them.

All Gaga fans have ran to the store to buy a few more copies, and Gaga haters have ran to the store to buy Emimem and then return it on Monday!
I'm actually surprised, but at the same time I'm not, many have it right, GP just doesn't care for her and hardcore fans can only do so much.

I know I would be if I were them. A poster at UkMix has said that this has now ruined the rest of their year. I actually don't think they were joking.

ArtPop MP3 is 5.99 in Amazon. Was it 5.99 all since release day?

I'm enjoying the album but agree with the general sentiment here - those numbers are not what I expected. Hoping for a consistent seller as DWUW is well on its way, Applause is still hanging around and she just had a #8 debut no? That's all encouraging.
Not quite on the pedestal she used to be on... and she only seems to be bothered about making an album for her core fanbase - which is fine, but she'll have to accept that pretty much everyone else will be alienated.

Years from now, I think the BTW era will be regarded as Gaga's career peak. It's downhill from now on, imo. She may still be able to generate some buzz, but I think her hype is slowing down, for good.
