Every once awhile, there seems to be a few albums that are labeled as bad/mediocre efforts by critics or the general public. Have you ever listened to an album and found it was a good record, with a bad reputation?
A few that come mind for me:
Bionic- This effort was labeled as campy trash by most, and the general public seemed all too happy to jump aboard the hate train without actually listening to the album itself. Chinese Democracy- This one seems to take the biggest beating from critics, when it fact it's a pretty solid album in itself.
Any other examples?

I was just coming in here to post about Bionic. Bar 'Not Myself Tonight', the album actually got better with age. Still campy though. - Fantasy Ride got a lot of flack too, and while it's no means my favorite, it's still a pretty good album?
- Somethin 'Bout Kreay was completely dismissed as a proper debut after what seemed like pretty decent hype, but I guess that had more to do with associated act V-Nasty dropping the N Bomb more than Kreayshawn's efforts.
- Blackout absolutely deserves a mention too. Although understandably a staple amongst gays on the internet, that album has a terrible reputation most everywhere else. Critics weren't that kind to it either, even if it wasn't completely raked over the coals.
- Trouble came off of a mediocre-at-best debut, but Natalia Kills really pulled out all the stops for this one. Great, great record.

"Blackout" while not received great upon it's release (which had more to do with her personal life than the music at the time) has received great acclaim in recent years. From being inducted in the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame to ending up on many best of critics lists.
I consider "Damita Jo" to be one of Janet's best but it was ripped apart by critics and fans. All claiming it to be the beginning of the end for Janet.
Madonna's "Hard Candy". Love the production on this album and enjoy all but 1 song. It's hailed to be her worst by most.
Spice Girls "Forever". While not as great as their first two albums, I enjoy this album and love the shift to the R&B/Urban sound. And I think it features some of the best songs in their discography

The first album that will always come to mind for this subject matter without question for me is Madonna's Hard Candy album. It definitely gets an unfair shake, but I love close to everything about it save "Voices" and "Spanish Lesson" depending on the day.

Concrete Rose got abysmal reviews despite the fact that it is a nice, light album with some fluff here and there.
Dangerously in Love got great reviews upon release but a lot of fans seem to discredit it. For a long time that was my favorite Bey album.

Paul McCartney's 1971 album Ram. Bashed mercilessly by the critics at the time; mainly because they still wanted Paul to make good on the promise they heard on side 2 of Abbey Road. And while 1970's McCartney was given a pass by most of them for being Paul's "Beatle break up" album, when his second solo album failed to dazzle them they went in for the kill.
But retrospectively, the album isn't that bad. It's no masterpiece or even a McCartney classic, but it's better than the critics at the time gave it credit for. There are some great moments of McCartney melody, and a few really good fully realized songs like the #1 single "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" and the Brian Wilson influenced "Back Seat Of My Car," but there are also a number of wasted McCartney tunes that really go nowhere, and other ones that aren't fully realized as songs; two criticisms that would become all too familiar ones to those who would choose to follow McCartney's solo work in the years to come.
All and all, Ram is a worthwhile album for any strong Beatles fan and/or a McCartney fan, but more casual fans might want to skip this one and get a truly classic McCartney album like Band On The Run instead.

People seem to hate on Femme Fatale a lot, but I really like it and think it's very well executed. Give me well crafted and produced pop music over some white girl dripping tears and slobbering over the mic anyday.

I'm actually surprised a few people have mentioned "Lotus." I liked most of the individual tracks, but it didn't really mesh well as an album to me. Plus, most of the vocals/production felt half-hearted. "Bionic" is a different story, though. As campy as it is, I thought it was a great album that was unfairly trashed (some was warranted, but not all).

Charmbracelet. A lot of great melodies on that album. If she wasn't whispering all the vocals it'd be a really great album.

Christina Aguilera - Bionic This had loads of catchy and fun dance tracks and some great ballads.
Justin Timberlake - The 20/20 Experience (Vol. 2) The long lengths of the songs hindered the public from checking out what was actually a really great album.
Kelly Clarkson - My December This was one of her most honest and organic albums and gave us a window into what she was going through at that time in her life.
Madonna - Erotica The media coverage of the controversy from the Sex book and the provocative video of the title song overshadowed an extremely well done record.

Dangerously in Love got great reviews upon release but a lot of fans seem to discredit it. For a long time that was my favorite Bey album. Still is, for me. This applies to most earlier albums from the big artists. Hell, Kelly Clarkson's debut was actually a good album, it seemed more authentic than some of her more recent ones, where she seems to phone in most of the songs. Rihanna's debut is also better than I think people give it credit for.

Hot Space by Queen, but with a big qualifier. It's a good album, but it's not a good Queen album.

Hot Space by Queen, but with a big qualifier. It's a good album, but it's not a good Queen album. Queen is my all time favorite group.Body language and Under pressure are great songs fron this album.

I think Tusk has a pretty good reputation. Better now than when it was released, but still.

I think Tusk has a pretty good reputation. Better now than when it was released, but still. Yes. I agree. I thought about reputation when it was released. The same thing happened with Pinkerton by Weezer.

Hilary Duff "Dignity".
I think the electronic sound (which wasn't popular at the time, but was two years later) along with more mature themes meant many of her younger fans were alienated and an older demographic wouldn't take Lizzie McGuire seriously. A**holes!

Kelly Clarkson - My December
Despite what Clive Davis thought there were hits on that album. It could have ended up selling at least 2 million with the proper support and promotional backing.
