Frankly, Pharrell presence is almost irrelevant on the song, it's not like if this was an duet.
And we'll see if Pharrell is able to get another big hit after Happy. There are a good bunch of big big hits followed for flops in recent years.
It's true that there's a little too much entusiasm for this song, but Ed had two hits on previous album (that could be three if he was released Give me love), and even radio didn't touch it, I see fire sales were good. And the album sold really well Pharrell had a lot of hits as a producer in the past, and even this song is very different from the a team or lego house it's not that far from the sound of other of his songs

I actually don't like the second verse of this song. :(
That first verse is FIRE.
I wish he would have done the second verse like that. It would have made this song KILLER.
As it is, I find myself really grooving to it with the first verse, which leads nicely into the chorus -- but the song hasn't built up enough in the direction it was going in to change gears like that.
I think had he used that rap for the bridge, it would've worked more.
It sucks cause I really want to like this, but the second verse rap is a misfire. Not because Ed Sheeran is rapping, just because of where it is structurally in the song.
There's a reason you see that structure in most pop songs that have a rap, and here, where it's been altered, to me it DOES feel 'off' and not as satisfying as it could have been.

I love how they layer the pre-chorus on top of the hook at the end. It brings up the energy for the finish.

I'm not even worried about this song. It's gonna have legs, and will likely last through the summer. It's an earworm.

I do like this song and I can't wait for Ed's album, I don't like that this doesn't really sound like an Ed Sheeran song. The acoustic guitar sounds really processed and doesn't have the natural ambience that it does on his other songs, the beat is also outside of the realm of what he's had before and while he does surprisingly well singing falsetto, it isn't distinguishable and may as well be JT or anyone else. With that said, people change and artists evolve and Ed had to shift his sound a bit to carry him over to the big leagues and the song is undeniably catchy. My favourite part of the song is the rap verse.

I'm interested in hearing this. I hope for less of the similar sounding guitar ballads that took up his last album and more exploration. I really like it when he goes for an acoustic hip-hop sound and wish he would showcase that more. All my requests happened. This is great, really great. Should easily become his biggest hit so far and makes me really excited for the album.

I like it, but I don't love it. I'm really glad that it's closer to his original style, even though I love his "The A Team"-style singles too, but the falsetto was a bit of a turn off for me. I can see it growing on me though.

Finally heard this song. It sounds like the 2011 version of You Need Me. Even some of the lyrics sound similar. Good song though.

I am a big JT fan but Ed sounds much less whiny. Love this song and it is much better than YNM.

Great performance on SNL! I loved the cuts from the acoustics to the production. He's got a winner here.

I am a big JT fan but Ed sounds much less whiny. This. I don't really understand the JT comparisons truthfully. The one part of the instrumental vaguely recalls "Like I Love You" (which itself sounded like "U Don't Have To Call" and "I'm A Slave 4 U") but the same man produced both. If anything it's a commentary on Pharrell's style rather than Ed supposedly sounding like JT.

If anything it's a commentary on Pharrell's style rather than Ed supposedly sounding like JT. Watching him perform this on SNL last night, it finally crystallized for me: Seeking to become two of the hottest trends at Pop radio right now, are white British boys bringing some kind of R&B influence (exactly what influence varies), and Pharrell production values. This song is where the two intersect, and it's such a fucking derivative. Between all that and the Clear Channel payola shoving this forward, I don't think I could be any more turned off to this now than I already am. That next song "Don't", tho - that's a hot one.

Libra the Clear Channel deal ended after the first day! This is a hit based off of buzz! And what's wrong with using trends to your advantage, it's not like he's selling out! That's how you stay in this business, you adapt your music to keep people buying and interested... He's simply taking trends and combining it with his style. Nothing wrong with that! I love this song, and I know it will smash! :)

ITA. It's not a bad song, but it's very derivative and generic sounding. Considering that he really didn't have that big hit singles before, I'm a bit puzzled by the royal treatment this single is getting by Clear Channel.

Either way, either the 8th day update will be pretty interesting to see, or this went by the way of "Come & Get It" last year...

Libra the Clear Channel deal ended after the first day! Officially yeah, it did. Unofficially...see also: Katy Tiz. That said though, while she appears to have hit a wall, he's probably not going to.
