A few random thoughts/observations for consideration:
1) I just listened to this for the first time, and I'm a little confused why there's surprise that this is on alternative. It's there because of the subject matter- the same reason why "I kissed a girl" was played on alternative (twice). 2) The complaints about poppy alternative music seem to have been going on for 13 years. It's moved like the plague from Good Charlotte, Hey There Delilah, Lorde, etc. 3) 11 years Evanescence ended a period of YEARS (maybe two years- I can't remember the exact duration) without a female charting on alternative, so I'm going to appreciate the diversity of female artists on alternative. 4) If a person had to pick 50 current songs to play on an alternative station- i.e. representing a top 50 chart- wouldn't this song be a logical selection for one of those 50 to provide variety to more rock oriented songs? Look at the variety of the charts in the 1980s and 1990s. People were complaining 10-15 years ago because there wasn't enough variety and because established artists received a free ride to the top of the chart. Now the complaints have shifted to the other side of the spectrum. 5) I'm going to suggest that maybe partly why alternative isn't playing active rock songs is because the recent singles aren't as good as in the past. Case in point Chevelle, who would probably fall in my top 10 all-time artists- I was all into their first 13 alternative singles, but since 2011 I haven't cared at all about their singles. And I don't think it's just because I'm getting older or my tastes are changing- I still like those old singles just as much. But in the past few years I've liked current pop singles less, current active rock singles less, and current alternative singles more. The only truly active rock songs that I've really, really liked this year are Spike in My Veins and Words as Weapons. I know this is just my own opinion, but if I'm not the only one who has lost interest in active rock songs, then that might explain the trend. 6) That being said, I do agree that alternative has gone too much in the other direction. But it doesn't bother me a whole lot and I don't notice it that much. Why? Because I don't listen to radio/music nonstop all day, which means I don't burn out on music. Maybe there's some wisdom in that approach.

Maybe there's some wisdom in that approach. I also don't listen to the radio too much, but I still follow the charts regularly, and it bothers me when I see a song make huge leaps on the chart, and I end up hearing it only to find it horrible. Case in point, this song. If the drug-referencing lyrics aren't enough to deter this from getting play, the chorus is irritating as well, and I don't know what the current alternative listeners see in pop songs like these. Also, she can't sing very well. I don't know why Alternative can't find a middle ground as well. Play some heavier and lighter music at the same time, nothing wrong with that. Instead, like you said, the complaints shift from one extreme to the other. This is one of the reasons why I wouldn't mind seeing Active Rock songs have success again.

I think it all depends on what era of music you are from. I'm from the 80's so I actually concider songs from Neon Trees, Bastille, Capital Cities to fit more of my defination of Alt/Rock. The reason is quite simple. In the 80's my alt/rock stations played Duran Duran, The Cars, Adam & The Ants, OMD . Thier influences are heard in many of today's alt/rock. Now if you came in during the 90's; then your defination of alt/rock would certainly be quite the opposite of that. Infact, I see it geared more into straight out Rock. I concider Chevell, Pop Evil and Shinedown, straight out rock. I love hard rock as much as the next fan, but was even more surprised to see "Heaven Knows"(A Great song!) break into Alt/Rock, then I would the new Capital Cities "One More Minute".
I havn't gotten too much into Tove Lo "Habits" just yet. I was also a late bloomer for Lorde, but "Team" really won me over. I think Tove Lo's song sounds a bit too much like Lorde. I don't think it will go to number one?

Heh, I started heavily listening to Alternative radio back in my high school days (2004-2008) which was when the format was much more rock-leaning, so it's no surprise I want rock to do well on the format again (i.e. Chevelle, Shinedown, etc.), rather than the pop-leaning stuff we have now (Lorde, Grouplove, Phantogram, etc.).

So yeah. I can't believe I never posted in this thread, but I read all 4 pages and I'm laughing at the fact that besides myself, the only rock forum regular here that likes it is Lordeftones.
From what I can tell, Pipa, Novaleks, Green Baron, Shadowscorp, American Idiot, and Devin at least all dislike this, haha.
I still think this is more "alternative" than Lana Del Rey's current song, for what that's worth.

But how is Lana's song (or this) not alternative? You might as well consider Mazzy Star's "Fade Into You" and The Sunday's "Here's Where The Story Ends" not alternative either, even though they're absolute classic golds.

Sorry, I didn't mean I don't think they're alternative songs, I just think this is better suited to the format (the original, that is). Lana's music is also kinda edgy, I just can't stand "West Coast".

I love this song (as you can tell by my status and pro picture ), but I don't think this is Alternative whatsoever. I'm kinda surprised it even hit Top 40 here.

Eh, it's more Alternative than "Doses and Mimosas". If that went top 10 I would've deleted my account.

In all honesty, it's gotten to the point where I actually prefer "Doses and Mimosas" over this. As horrible as that song is, I actually found it, albeit very slightly, amusing. (sort of) This is just straight up annoying and extremely difficult to listen to. I was glad when "Until It's Gone" finally knocked it out of the top 20, and hopefully it slides even further in the coming days. Also, 5000 posts.

This is about as exciting as an average Rihanna ballad. Good music to nap to anyways.

Lol, this topic. On a format whose #1 is that song by The Bleachers, and "Best Day of my Life" can recently log 27 weeks in the top 50, I'm not sure what makes this song too poppy to only be at the bottom of the top 20.
I think it's alright; could have been better if its metaphors weren't so predictable. Except for the one about the Twinkies; that was good.

They could have added echoes and/or distortion to any (or every) element of her music and it all would end up sounding exactly like Lykke Li.
I think I like her.

Don't get me wrong, both of those are poppy, but this is the poppiest song on the chart. It's not alternative rock in any way, and that's a unanimous claim from everyone here, even the pop posters who love it to death. Come on - there's no instruments at all, just a repetitive hip-hop beat in the background. What makes that alternative? It's a horrible song in general, to be honest.

There's a fair amount of drums and bass. This is only poppy relatively to the rest of the chart, it's actually "alternative" to the current wave of mainstream pop music, which is the traditional description of alternative. It's important to be willing to accept both the Post-Nirvana AND Pre-Nirvana definitions. This would've charted in the late 80s on Alternative as well.
