So is it your opinion that if Taylor had released Shake it Off and Out of the Woods exactly as they are but not declared this a "pop album," nobody would have discussed a transformation in sound? "We Are Never Getting Back Together", "State of Grace" and "I Knew You Were Trouble" were all released prior to their respective album, therefor the "transformation of sound discussion" had already been had. This time around I don't think people would have found the sound of those two songs surprising (regardless of any announcement). The 80s element is more surprising than the fact that they're pop songs imo. Every album represents a transformation of some sort. "Love Story" was different than anything on "Taylor Swift," "Mine" was different than anything on "Fearless" and "We Are never Ever Getting Back Together" was different than anything on "Speak Now." So, yes, I know transformation discussions have already been had. But I think another one would have been had regarding the difference between Shake it Off/Out of the Woods and the general Red sound even if Taylor hadn't outright told you this was a different, straight-pop sound (you appear to be disputing this point). It seems like a transformation in tone and sound - not simply a refinement.

I disagree about "Mine." I think it could have fit on to Fearless just fine. The rest of the album was different than Fearless, but "Mine" has a similar sound to what made Fearless the mega-hit that it was.

Every album represents a transformation of some sort. "Love Story" was different than anything on "Taylor Swift," "Mine" was different than anything on "Fearless" and "We Are never Ever Getting Back Together" was different than anything on "Speak Now." LOL. First of all, "Mine" recieved a ton of criticism for being too similiar in sound to her previous album's material. People were screaming she had no variety (until the album was released that is). I think everyone can universally agree the differences between her first three album's respective singles pale in comparison to the jump from Speak Now to Red. That was when the differences weren't so subtle and all the talk of her finally fully embracing pop started. My point is the genre hasn't changed (in regard to singles/promo singles from her last release). Do they sound different? Of course, but that is less to do with them supposedly being "more pop" and more to do with the songs saluting late 80s production.

I don't know what could be a bigger departure from the typical Taylor sound than an electro pop song including dub step!! That was as big departure as it gets, and that happened with Red. And let's remember that people were already saying that Taylor was doing a better Avril Lavigne sound than Avril with Never Ever. That was never said about Taylor with any of her previous singles. To me, the big jump to pop in terms of sound happened with Red, and in terms of stage performance. The big change I see now is in her video imagery. Choreography, slickness, high visual production is newer for Taylor in SIO. The video is the most pop diva video I've ever seen from her. On top of that is the fact that TS is not including singles for promo or release in country radio. Still, to me it's not as significant as the steps taken in favor of pop during the Red era

^ I agree that the biggest change for Taylor came from Speak Now to Red, but if you look at her discography as a whole, you definitely find a very steady transition from country to pop. I get the impression that some people consider her debut to be her only true full-on country album. Fearless was still country, but had more pop appeal and a few songs that sounded more top 40 than country (such as "Forever and Always," "You're Not Sorry"). Speak Now actually had quite diverse sounds on it and went even further from country, though the production and songwriting kept it firmly labelled in the country category. Then Red came along which did have tracks that had a complete pop sound, but the album still had a handful of strong country tracks (including some of her best to date as well - "Red," "Begin Again," "All Too Well") and others that didn't have a country sound but a country songwriting sensibility which made the album just hybrid enough to be called country (not without some outrage and debate, of course). And now Taylor is going full-fledged pop, but no one seems bothered as this point because the evolution has been very gradual and, dare I say, natural as well. Taylor's pop sound doesn't seem put on, because it's something that's been developing almost from the start.
Also, Taylor has made excellent use of non-album singles to help her with her transformation of sound. For example "Safe & Sound" and "Eyes Open" were a brilliant way for Taylor to introduce more folk and rock sounds that would make their way onto Red, just as "Sweeter than Fiction" was a nice precursor to the sound of 1989. It goes the other way as well, as something like "Highway Don't Care" was a good way to keep one foot planted in country whilst making the pop transition so that the whole evolution of sound didn't seem too much all at once. In regards to this evolution of sound, I think it has been one of the things that Taylor has done best in her career and is no doubt responsible for her steady success in the US and growing success worldwide.

Another Negative update. Could it be peaking already? Track #1 or Out Of The Woods Next Single?

Even if it is peaking here, it served its purpose: a huge hit that set the album up nicely. A shorter run is expected given its monstrous entry. :)

Eh for what it's worth, I was walking around the Shibuya district of Tokyo yesterday morning and this song was blaring on steady repeat. I went back in the evening and it was still being played on steady repeat.

The same song on repeat all day? Those poor people. Any song on repeat like that would be the worst. At least add in "Out of the Woods" and "Welcome to New York" and maybe a few of her past hits.

SIO's 10th week: 62k (¬¬) Total sales: 2606k
WANEGBT's 10th week: 112k Total sales: 2443k
Difference: SIO's advantage is an 6.3%, this decreased a 2.8% from 9.1% last week. This will be the last Difference i'm putting i think. I can't find WANEGBT 11th week's sales because it left the top 10 this week. Well. It's clear SIO is waaay bigger.

Shake It Off is miles better of a song than WNGBT.
I actually think in retrospect We Are Never... Is probably one of her worst singles.

Well, i was expecting that last week, she really had a big advantage on sales so it was a posibility.
She did an amazing job in this promo, not only going in full pop star mode but the promo did wonders for her public image, even people that didn't like her recognize she was funny and great in a lot of her tv appareances
