It's apparently Miranda's next single, set for a June release: That doesn't make much sense to me, to have no new Miranda music on the radio for over a month. It makes sense between records, but in the middle of an album I just don't see how that will be beneficial. It's not like you can even really tell that Little Big Town is on "Smokin' and Drinkin'". I'm also nervous that the subject matter will be a little polarizing for radio. They've shown slightly more push against the drinking songs lately and we know how they feel about smoking songs. (not that the song is even *really* about those things, but it's in the title for goodness sake). Musically it's much safer than "Little Red Wagon" and to me it has a feel of "Girl Crush" which may work to its advantage. Another thing to note...by June, where will "Girl Crush" be...top 10? It can't see it being higher than #8 by that point even if it performs amazingly.

"Little Red Wagon' will officially go recurrent on MB next Sunday and let's say the add date is early to mid June. That mean's the announcement will be coming in two to four weeks, and I really don't feel that's too long of a break. In the end, it's not going to be a factor whether "Smokin' And Drinkin'" will be successful. Country radio will support Miranda when she releases a new single. It's later in the chart run where thing's could go awry, and to me if that should happen, that's directly related to the style of the song (like "Little Red Wagon"). I agree that this is a much safer choice for radio and it really should have been the third single all along. We'll likely never know why they decided on LRW third and held off on "Smokin' And Drinkin'", but if this indeed the next single, then I can actually enjoy Miranda on the radio again.

The love for "Smokin & Drinkin" completely escapes me. The monotone & electronic delivery just destroys what could have possibly been a decent record for me. If it is indeed the next single , this will officially be the longest streak of songs by Miranda that I flat out loath. I thought "Automatic" was decent , if a bit generic , but everything since has been the bottom of the barrel material from "Platinum" as far as I'm concerned.

I agree completely, it absolutely kills an otherwise good song. I wonder if it will skew polarizing for that very reason (I personally think it is the dumbest thing imaginable - why make a rich voice sound monotonous ON PURPOSE??). They would be smart to release an alternate version without the electronic effects and let radio decide which one to play.

I have to agree that for good as Platinum is, they've done some odd things. When I first heard this song back (when? CMAs? That dumb award show hosted by FGL?) I did not like it. It (like you said) is very monotone and it just drones on. And you can't even tell it's Little Big Town. Or Miranda, for that matter. But hearing it now (perhaps in a different season) makes a lot more sense to me. It's light and airy and would be good driving by a flowing field of wheat on a warm but breezy summer day. I'm sure that's what they had in mind when the song was recorded.

When this was rumored to be a single (and we even had a thread here about it) I asked when this would be peaking, because to me, it seems like the perfect spring into summer song. I can't pinpoint exactly what it is, but there is something about it just makes me think of warm weather.

Let's do average chart position for singles off Platinum:
1. Automatic-2014-#3 2. Somethin' Bad-with Carrie Underwood-2014-#7 3. Little Red Wagon-2015-#16
Average chart position: 8.67. Even if Smokin' And Drinkin' tops the chart, Miranda Lambert will improve her average chart position to 6.75. Very bad from the six-time A.C.M./five-time C.M.A. Female Vocalist of the Year. To think, The House That Built Me will celebrate its fifth anniversary of being a chart topper this June. Only three others have made it that far it that time period.

I could see this being a little polarizing because of the vocal effect, but this being about smoking (cigarettes, not marijuana) and drinking is not a controversial subject for country radio at all and I disagree that releasing something with a drinking theme is going to receive any sort of push back from radio. It's a common staple topic for the genre and it always has been; it's not going away. I think S&D will be a good single choice. Idk if that'll be the one to end her #1 drought this era, which I really wanted to see happen, but I do love the song, so I'm all for hearing it on the radio and them making a great music video for it. Plus, capitalizing on LBT's hype right now might help propel this song's popularity and be beneficial for both parties. I imagine it will sell very well even if it performs similar to "Somethin' Bad" in airplay. Maybe then they can close out the era with "Another Sunday in the South" and that'll go to #1, like I still think it would if released.

As much as I like "Smokin' And Drinkin'," it seems like it would been a much more appropriate fit as a Fall/Winter single.
Considering "Platinum" has quite a few radio-ready single choices (Platinum, Girls, Another Sunday In The South), I just don't quite see what the deal is with all these polarizing releases.
I can see how this is a polarizing single choice, and it took me a good dozen listens or so to really appreciate this one.
The most polarizing aspect of this song to me is the use of vocal effects; I don't see the smoking/drinking angle being an issue at all.
If anything, this song is unlike anything at radio right now, and it doesn't fit the current mold.
I think people who are tried of the partying/drinking songs might actually like this, because it's relatable without being too cliche and shallow.
I'm not sure how it'll do at radio, but LBT's red-hot momentum right now, hopefully this will receive proper promotion and soild airplay.
I could see a really moody, atmospheric video working perfectly, too.

So RCA Nashville's promo team is going to be out of work until June? That's really an eyebrow-raiser to me. sabre14, I do realize that "Break Up with Him" doesn't officially go for adds until May 11, but how do we know RCA will not start working the single or getting early hype and commitments before the adds date? I know I've already been seeing ads for the single put out by RCA and I'd think a Sony label imprint would want to have something to promote instead of being completely off the charts for over a month. There's no word on new Chris Young or Jake Owen singles yet so I imagine RCA could start working either "Smokin' and Drinkin'" or "Break Up with Him" as early as this week. Also, if the reason SAD wasn't released before LRW was to "wait out" "Girl Crush," then isn't giving Miranda's single a June add date way worse than a January add date since the LBT song has really caught on and will be getting heavier rotation than it was in January, when it seemed like it may have flopped on the charts. Now, the LBT song is more likely to hurt the Miranda song if anything since GC has become a massive hit while Miranda's the one who's fresh out of momentum.

Oh I knew you knew the add date. I was just making a note that they will not be really going full throttle with "Break Up With Him" til the 11th. Radio knows about their deal with RCA and they've known about this song for quite a while, so one week will not change much in terms of early jumpers, though I expect a few today. RCA is making some noise behind the scenes in regards to 'Break Up With Him" but the full go will be one week from now. Again, it's just one lonely week and "Break Up With Him" is charting on Billboard and close to cracking the top 50 on MB. I really don't feel it's a huge deal that RCA has a slight (and I mean slight) lull in their single release schedule. Sometimes it just works out that way. Two months from now they'll likely have 4-5 singles being promoted to radio (Old Dominion, Miranda, Chris, Jake).

Maybe then they can close out the era with "Another Sunday in the South" and that'll go to #1, like I still think it would if released. The fact that the chorus revolves around "smoking and drinking" won't hurt it's chances in the ultimate ending in my opinion, but from what I've read with many radio programmers is they aim to only have a couple "Drinking" songs in high rotation at once, so there is the slightest possibility that if a couple of drinking songs were in high rotation when this song is getting near the top 10, it'd probably have to wait it out until one is replaced (read about this issue last year when "Drunk On A Plane" was peaking). I think that is the only extent we will see this song being affected by the title/content. As for the song itself, I love Miranda's voice normally as it is on most songs, but I still really like the vocals on this one. This song is weird because the production sounds pretty country and so do the lyrics, but it's only the autotune on her voice that is different, and could be country music's favorite word these days "polarizing". But it's certainly not as obnoxious as "Drink To That All Night" was (thank goodness I haven't heard that song much since it peaked). Jerrod had a heavy autotune on that song (sounded like it could have been a Daft Punk record IMO) and the instrumental was like a bad 90's dance song. At least with this song the core elements to it are pretty country sounding. It's a beautiful song that I personally think will sound great at radio if given the chance. I personally would have released it as the 5th single and gone with something safer right now ("Another Sunday In The South" says hello), but I certainly won't mind hearing this over summer.

It's a common staple topic for the genre and it always has been; it's not going away. Right, drinking songs have always been a part of country music, but having said that, I don't agree with this paragraph here. There have been several articles over the last year or so in which country radio programmers have stated that they have to be very careful about how many drinking songs they're playing. Here's one such article from Billboard: www.billboard.com/articles/columns/6193478/country-music-alcohol-interventionI think there's a very high chance that RCA received some feedback from radio (ie, "can you give us a different single? We've already got a lot of different drinking songs on our plate right now") and decided to pull "Smokin' And Drinkin'" before it was even released, probably because they had concerns about how well it would do. I always thought they would still consider it down the line but maybe they felt or were even told that there were too many drinking songs on the chart last fall/winter. Right now there are still quite a few songs on the charts that are about drinking in one way or another. "Drinking Class", "A Guy Walks Into A Bar", "Smoke", "Sippin' On Fire", "Diamond Rings and Old Barstools", "Crushin' It", "Sangria", "Hangover Tonight", "Let Me See Ya Girl"...heck, even songs like "Raise 'Em Up", "Love You Like That", and "Going Out Like That" have drinking references in them. I'm sure I missed a few too. The bottom line - radio doesn't want to have too many drinking songs out at the same time, and labels are very aware of this too.

^ Understandable, but my point is more that even though stations may need to pay more attention to when and how often they spin alcohol-themed songs, I don't think the topic itself is really going to be much of a problem for this single. If it was a serious problem, I don't think you'd have been able to list so many songs that are in the Top 15 right now that fall under that umbrella.

Right - I don't think that the topic itself is an issue, but if there are too many drinking songs out at once, then some of them are going to struggle. So I just think that record labels have to be careful about that, and so does radio. Now, if only programmers could code their music scheduling systems so that there was a gap of at least a couple of hours between bro-country songs...

Like, I love "Smokin' & Drinkin'" and I'm thrilled with it getting released (unpopular opinion), but...what the hell are they doing with this era? If they intended on releasing it, why didn't they do it in November when A) "Somethin' Bad" peaked, B) "Day Drinking" peaked, C) they performed it at the CMAs, D) both ML & LBT were riding high from their CMA wins/Grammy nominations the following month, and E) it would be more appropriate to release it considering the timing of the year? If they were dead-set on releasing "Little Red Wagon", couldn't it have waited until after "Smokin' & Drinkin'"? And it's not like LBT couldn't have released "Girl Crush" at any time because, really, the song was going to be a controversial monster that'd gain traction whether it was released in the middle of December or the middle of June.
The first two singles from this album made sense. "Automatic" did its job by building momentum and indicating a real contextual shift in Lambert's musicality with Platinum. "Somethin' Bad", regardless of how good or bad you all might think the song is, was an obvious release choice because A) it was loud enough to fit in with what was being played on Country radio, B) it was a collaboration with the format's other biggest superstar, and C) it was an all-female collaboration, which was something the format hadn't seen by its biggest stars in ages. Both achieved respectable accolades, nominations, sales, chart statistics, etc.
After those 2, they completely dropped the ball. What a damn shame considering how fantastic of an album this is. It's a good thing the success of the album as a whole hasn't reflected much, but her radio success, for an artist of her calibre, is really average, and that's sad for me to see.

I so agree. IMO this is one of the best albums of the decade so far, but you wouldn't exactly know it based on the single choices. It's frustrating to me that they've wasted so much time, only to apparently re-land on "Smokin' And Drinkin'" (which I do like, but not so much as a radio single, and especially not after the singles that have been released so far).

Any news or rumors about Miranda's next single? Just weird that she hasn't had a single in like what two weeks? That's a long time for her. I'm really hoping the next one will be "Another Sunday in the South", I do love that song.

Should definitely return Miranda to the top 5 on the chart.

I know that there was a bit of a gap between "Somethin' Bad" and "Little Red Wagon", and I know that the chart is jam-packed with seemingly every A, B, and C list artist that there is, but having another gap between singles makes no sense to me. This is Miranda Lambert...she doesn't have to worry about moving up the chart slowly anymore.
Even at its peak, LRW barely got into top 20 rotation, so it's not like she's going to be competing against the recurrent airplay of her previous singles. Luke Bryan, Sam Hunt, Cole Swindell, Thomas Rhett, Brett Eldredge, and Darius Rucker are all seeing a lot of recurrent airplay with their recent singles, but that's not the case for Miranda.
The rumor is that "Smokin' And Drinkin'" is next, set for a June release, but I don't see why they feel the need to wait. They should have sent the next single out as soon as LRW started falling. Waiting for "Girl Crush" makes no sense either, because that one is going to have higher airplay next month than it's had over the last few weeks; GC is only going to continue to increase in airplay for the next 2-3 months yet.
LRW sold extremely well...it just wasn't a good radio song, and I think RCA probably knew that from the start. But if they give radio something more radio-friendly, then Miranda will be just fine. It's not all that different from Eric Church following up "The Outsiders" with "Give Me Back My Hometown", or following up "Cold One" with "Talladega".
It's just bizarre the way Sony is handling this era. I can't think of any other currently-charting artist that has had such a poorly-handled era recently. I realize RCA is in the process of launching Old Dominion, and they've also got a new Chris Young single and a new Jake Owen single on the way, but that's nothing that they can't handle. My guess is that maybe it has something to do with the departure of Gary Overton...Sony just doesn't seem to be firing on all cylinders right now.

^Although, since the departure at Sony it seems Carrie is doing pretty good, jumping 6 spaces from 13 to 7 in two weeks. Interesting.

Overton's departure wouldn't affect a currently-charting single from someone like Carrie. It would only affect artists who are between singles or between albums, or who are really new. Songs like "Little Toy Guns" and Kenny Chesney's "Wild Child" have already proven themselves to be hits and so radio is going to keep pushing them up in rotation regardless of any 'issues' that the label is currently facing. All Sony artists who have had singles climbing the charts for the last 2+ months are doing just fine...that includes Carrie as well Tyler Farr, Kenny Chesney, and Chris Young. The reason I speculated it might have an affect on Miranda is because she's between singles, and it seems as if the label has just been really scatterbrained when it comes to the Platinum era. It's like they're spread too thin right now, and Miranda is getting the short end of the stick.

The reason I speculated it might have an affect on Miranda is because she's between singles, and it seems as if the label has just been really scatterbrained when it comes to the Platinum era. It's like they're spread too thin right now, and Miranda is getting the short end of the stick. Not to bash Miranda, I like her, but maybe she should get the short end this time, because she certainly doesn't when it comes to anything in the country field.

I agree with jhomes87, this era has been very poorly handled by Sony. Although I didn't particularly care for it, "Automatic" was a good lead single choice, but the single choices since then have been pretty baffling. Obviously "Somethin' Bad" was going to be a single, but that and "Little Red Wagon" should have never been back-to-back. It's quite unfortunate, because "Platinum" is an excellent album with a lot of single potential IMO, but they've chosen some of the album's worst songs to showcase as singles thus far. I also don't understand the big gap between LRW and single #4 (presumably "Smokin' and Drinkin'"). If they want to avoid "Girl Crush," they'll have to wait several months still, so they might as well release something else in the meantime if they don't want GC and S&D on the charts at the same time. Then release S&D as the fifth single. As far as I know, Sony still has not announced a replacement for Overton, so I wouldn't be surprised if that is indeed affecting many of Sony's artists who are between singles/albums or new. I hope they announce a new CEO soon.
